The WARble Combat System
(Divider to save space)
Health:
Simply put, the stronger the bug, the higher the Health. Think of it like Masks.
(For example, the average pilgrim would only have 2, a Skarr Stalker would have 4 health, Hornet would have around 5, and higher beings hit the health ceiling at 10.)
Dice:
Dice are the most essential element of combat, and the technical component that makes everything function. The format for dice is as follows:
CdP, # dmg
C stands for "Count." Count is how many dice are being rolled. Some dice have a limit on how much count they can have. d stands for "dice," and it's the type of dice being rolled. This part doesn't change or do anything. P stands for "Power." Power is the amount of faces a die has, and thus, the maximum number a die can roll. dmg stands for "Damage," though that should be obvious. It's how much damage a die does, and can be a value from 1-3. Sometimes, count and damage are the same thing.
Evasion Check:
The Evasion Check is a dice rolled to determine the value that has to be surpassed by Offensive Dice in order to deal damage. The Evasion Check is rolled by both characters at the start of their turn, and the dice used for the check is determined by the character’s “skill.” A character with higher skill can use stronger dice, like a d16, whereas a character with a lower skill has to use weaker dice, like a d8.
Dice Types:
There are two types of dice, that being Offensive Dice and Defensive Dice. Only one type of dice can be used in a turn, except for in specific cases.
Offensive Dice are the damage dealers, and will deal damage if you rolled higher than your opponent’s Evasion Check. Offensive Dice can inflict negative Dice Modifiers on hit, but it’s suggested to have some sort of requirement that needs to be fulfilled in order to inflict the debuff. (ex. of Offensive Dice: 1d15)
Defensive Dice come in two forms: Guard dice, which help prevent damage, and Counter dice, which can deal extra damage at a risk.
Guard Dice increase the value of your Evasion Check by half of the rolled value rounded up, and will decrease damage taken by 1. (Cannot reduce damage taken below 1.) Guard Dice can also apply a positive Dice Modifier to yourself upon a successful evasion. (ex. of Guard Dice: G1d14) Counter Dice will decrease the value of your Evasion Check by half of the rolled value rounded down. If the enemy rolls over the Evasion Check’s value, you will deal damage equal to the Counter Dice’s count plus the damage taken. If the enemy rolls under the Evasion Check's value, you will only deal damage equal to the Counter Dice's count. Counter Dice can also inflict a negative Dice Modifier to the enemy on hit. Counter Dice cannot be used as a response, only in anticipation. (ex. of Counter Dice: C1d10) If two Defensive Dice are used, nobody will take damage, and nothing will happen.
Dice Modifiers:
Dice Modifiers will add an extra, weaker die onto the next Offensive Dice used, increasing the power of the final roll. (e.g. 1d12 becomes 1d12 + 1d6) Dice Modifiers can only be gained or inflicted with Offensive, Guard, or Counter Dice when meeting the conditions. Dice Modifiers can also subtract dice power instead of adding! Be creative with it, but don’t go too overboard.
Inventory:
The inventory can hold up to three items, and these items can be used mid fight for a small buff/advantage, such as healing items or tools. Items have a limited amount of uses, and only one can be used per turn. It's entirely up to the players to decide how their items work! Go wild, but try to stay balanced.
Action Order:
Blog 1, initiation rolls -> Blog 2 response rolls, damage calculation, anticipation rolls -> Blog 1 response rolls, damage calculation, anticipation rolls -> Repeat from step 2.
During either player's turn, they can choose between using Offensive/Defensive Dice, and can also choose between using/not using items in the inventory.
FAQ:
Q: How do fights against multiple enemies work? A: About the same, but the singular attacker can use a guard skill and an attack skill every turn, and attacks with multiple dice can divide damage among the enemies.
Q: What should I use to roll dice? A: I would use rolladie.net, it's free to use and really useful for making custom dice!
