the aeneid is great because it's about aeneas without being about him at all. i sing of arms and of the man. arma is literally the first word. it's about founding rome. it's about who augustus is was and might be. it's about old epic. it's about creating a lineage to be proud of. it's about the punic wars. it's about the civil wars. it's about caesar, about pompey, it's about the defeated of rome. it's about everything except aeneas. all the things aeneas should care about most are kind of glossed over. creusa's death is given the most consideration and aeneas is literally the narrator. even discussions about it are divided often into iliad/odyssey or propaganda/not. some discussions about aeneas will just see him as augustus. he's a man not a man. he's working for a future that doesn't involve him at all. venus stops bargaining for him and starts bargaining for ascanius in book 10. the aeneid ends when aeneas kills turnus while saying that someone else did it. the aeneas is about aeneas without being about him at all
Hey, so, what do you mean Lemony "doesn't like thinking about the details" of his unusual education? What do you mean he was "taught not to mind" being alone? What did VFD do to him???
In my heart Vergil loves Dido. At least in the Fagles translation, she is described with such care and gentleness compared to the other characters (which could be just bc she's a woman, but he doesn't go to quite this extent with Lavinia or Sylvia, other mortal women). She is given a confidant she can trust, she is depicted as powerful and kind and beautiful. I'm gonna add some of my favourite lines about her.
And she's constantly referred to as "tragic" Dido, or "doomed" Dido, but she's not doomed the way Aeneas is. She doesn't know her fate. Her suffering has no glory in it, her destiny is not brave. She is a woman who has gone through so much heartbreak already, and Vergil takes no joy in explaining how her pain will only be furthered.
But then Vergil also gives her the dignity of being a mirror of Aeneas as well, despite the fact she isn't a fighter like him, or a demigod. He equates her suffering and sense of isolation to Aeneas's and gives voice to her emotions.
This next chunk is also my favourite line in the entire Aeneid because it carries so much emotion. She's just married Aeneas, unknowingly sealed her fate, and all she feels is guilt where anyone else would feel joy because she feels she's betraying her late husband.
And then like two pages later Aeneas gets told he has to leave her and this is what he's thinking
And poor Dido already knows
And the line "who can delude a lover?" actually makes me tear up because it's so soft compared to the war that surrounds everything in the epic. There's no political allegiances here (with the mortals at least), Dido is simply referred to as what she is. His lover. She loves him, and she's chosen to love him despite the guilt she felt the entire time, and she's finally able to accept her place with him.
And because shes chosen to marry him DESPITE any political motivations, she's isolated herself from the tribes and cities that wanted her hand because she married for love.
And Aeneas explains that he's going to leave because his true love is waiting for him in Italy (and if I were Dido I'd have beat his ass but whatever) and she rightfully yells at him and after she leaves he just decides its the perfect time to row away forever. And Vergil says this when she realises
He doesn't villanise her for losing it at Aeneas. He speaks to her (the way Homer spoke to Patroclus right before his death I'll add) and he acknowledges her pain and the awful cards she's been dealt.
He speaks to her fears and perspective.
And this is a long post already but he never blames her for her death by suicide. In fact Iris is sent down to take her to the Underworld, because since she killed herself she shouldn't be allowed in, but the gods can all see how horribly she's been treated and they at least give her a peaceful death.
To me, Vergil loves Dido. He gives her respect even in her death and darkest moments where it would have been easy to villanise a woman who not only verbally abused the hero of the story, but also took a dishonourable way out by Roman standards and killed herself. But he treats her with a gentle love and reverance that is unqiue to her. She's not a queen or a wife in the end, she's just a woman in pain.

feeling absolutely bonkers about dallas theater center’s staging of a modernized les mis. after enjolras’ final verse of ‘red and black’ (who cares about your lonely soul, etc etc), it’s MARIUS who first sings ‘red’. declaring his solidarity to the cause. but without denying that he has this immense passion that also occupies his heart. it’s so unbelievably good. he and enjolras also have a special handshake. it makes me want to blow up.

call me terminally academia-brained but i do think a lot of the fun of character analysis is figuring out how to build a compelling argument for a particular reading using lines of evidence from canon as well as meta/intertextual support
and you could say that what i’m saying here is basically “a lot of the fun of doing character analysis is doing character analysis” but let’s be real a lot of fandom character analysis is pretty heavily vibes-based. and i think that’s where i really chafe up against the traditional thought-terminating fandom attitude of like, everyone’s opinions hold equal weight and any interrogation of that is inherently hostile. because i think it’s fascinating to dig into where others are coming from in terms of their views on characters or dynamics or whatever, especially when they differ significantly from more commonly expressed views, and part of that digging is asking people okay what parts of canon are you drawing from to support your opinion? what parts of canon are you disregarding or downplaying? how does this argument hold up in the light of how race, gender, class, ability, etc. operate both in the piece’s in-fiction and real world contexts?
cameron really likes sketching and spends a lot of time sitting on the hill drawing and listening to music. sometimes todd will come join him so he can read and they’ll just sit in silence together for hours
neil is a very noisy wake upper every single morning he’ll stretch and groan and twist around and shuffle around in his sheets and it’s a good thing todd is a heavy sleeper or else he would never get past neil waking up
knox tries to wear wired headphones because he thinks they look cool except the earbuds don’t fit in his ears properly and keep falling out so he has to make the switch to over the ear headphones
todd is a google calendar final boss. every single thing he does is put into the calendar and if it’s a spontaneous plan he’ll be adding it on the way there for accuracy
pitts has the most eclectic and widespread music taste out of all the poets, it covers most decades since music began being recorded and basically all genres. the closest he comes to disliking someone is phoebe bridgers because she makes him too sad (he still listens anyway)
meeks has really terrible balance personally (discovered after a failed gymnastics class at age eight) but when it comes to carrying things or balancing them on other places he is a master of it
charlie forces all of the poets to watch muppets most wanted with him every year on his birthday. he’s been able to quote the entire movie since he was eight and neil and meeks are starting to reach the same point after so many years of watching it with him
