You're not just mean!.. You're median and mode too...
@funnier-as-a-system
If you're comfortable accusing anyone of faking disability, you're not a real ally to disabled people
One time when I was a kid a group of girls and I had to treat another student for hypothermia by ourselves because she had so many invisible health issues that the adults we asked for help didn't believe us. The student in question was actively hallucinating. When I finally ran for help the people I grabbed were slow as shit to respond, casually joking about how "dramatic" the person in question was.
The kid was picked up by an ambulance 30 minutes later.
Now as an adult working in security I get SO MANY folks- upper-middle aged mostly- coming to me to 'rat out' people they think are faking it.
I was once sent into a bathroom because a client demanded that the "fucker won't get out, so go drag them out"- I was NEVER going to do that, so I did a wellness check instead. You know who it was? A person recently released from the hospital after a car accident. They had a hole in their skull and major hearing loss. They couldn't answer the owner because they couldn't HEAR the owner.
Another time about a homeless man who got around town by kicking the ground from his wheelchair. "You know he doesn't actually need that thing, his legs work fine, it's just for pity points"- Oh, so he's not paralyzed, his wheelchair is performative? Funny story Dale, I actually know that guy, he was backed over by a truck and has chronic pain from his shattered pelvis. But sure, let's make him stand up and walk everywhere so nobody feels too bad for him and tries to help him or something.
"She doesn't need that scooter, I've seen her get out of it."
"Look how fat he is, because he just rides around and refuses to get up."
"She doesn't really need that cane- she comes here without it all the time"
Sincerely, truly, from the bottom of my heart- as someone who isn't physically disabled but hears this shit all the time- fuck off
"came back wrong" you could not come back wrong even if you tried. you've changed, beyond recognition, but while my eyes may not know you, my heart still does. i love you.
unfortunately i have free will so im about to make art that is going to appeal to basically 4 people. let us hope those 4 people follow me.

so fucking humbling to be like “no I like that character a normal amount” and then you can literally feel your heart rate spike at a mention of them like a dog that just heard the word “treat”
3 pm: god, I'm EXHAUSTED. going to bed early for SURE.
midnight: I Have Literally Never Been More Awake And Alert
This is basically how I learned to socialize
Some is better than none. Some is better than none. Some is better than none. Walking for three minutes, is better than nothing. Drinking a glass of water and eating a snack, is better than nothing. Wiping down the counter, is better than nothing. Small things are not nothing. Small things are not nothing. Small things are not nothing. You don’t have to achieve grand things if all you’re capable of right now is the smaller things. They are still achievements. Don’t do nothing just because you don’t think you’re capable of doing bigger things, just do something you’re capable of today.
"DID can only develop before ages 6-9″ is a myth, and here’s why
Oh, and the idea that it only develops through repeated childhood trauma is also a myth, and we’ll address that too.
So we should clarify - there are plenty of studies that point to the idea that DID often develops in young children who have experienced repeated childhood trauma. That is not what we’re disputing - many DID systems form this way and is likely to be the most common way DID is formed. However, it’s not the only way.
Firstly, we have an epistemological objection to this commonly circulated myth. The problem with studying DID (and any psychiatric disorder, really) is that you cannot do scientific studies in the same way that you can in other fields. In most scientific studies, your goal is to have something that’s observable, testable, and most important replicable and repeatable. This is simply not an option in psychiatry. You cannot repeat or replicate a study into the development of a child’s brain, because that person will only be a child once. You cannot go back in time to do it over again. You also cannot keep human beings in an environment in which you could study their day to day lives 24/7. And hopefully it goes without saying you cannot run unethical experiments or tests on them.
So when trying to study the development of DID, there’s no way you can run [traditional] scientific studies to determine beyond a reasonable doubt how and when DID forms. The absolute best you can do is a hypothesis or model that is supported by a large amount of evidence. The way the information is often obtained in psychiatric studies is by listening to the experiences of others. You must record experiences that are not provable, that are not something that can be observed or repeated. Experiences are highly subjective! What might be traumatic for one person might not be for another, and what might be traumatic “enough” to form DID in one person might not be for another, etc.
And most importantly, above anything else? No two human brains are the same. Brains are highly complex and individual. There are many things we simply don’t understand about how it works or why it does the things that it does. At best you can make generalizations, but even then there will always be exceptions.
So all of that being said, here’s some relevant sources.
>> An interview with Dr. Mike Lloyd, a DID consultant clinical psychologist - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzxqLt0kheY&ab_channel=MultiplicityAndMe
When asked about the cut-off age of DID, he says: “We don’t yet know enough… We don’t have a critical window for the development of identity… That does not exist within the human being. We don’t have that cut-off point to say, the identity is completely and utterly certain, by the age of [blank]. It’s just not there, because there’s so many infinite probabilities for how identity can be formed.” <<
>> Dissociative disorders (including “multiple personalities” in this study) being observed in a 32-year old man following a traumatic brain injury: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10230523/ <<
>> “Multiple personality disorder” found in Vietnam veterans, most likely to be associated with trauma experienced during war, rather than during childhood: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00946278 <<
>> This study which dives in-depth to the experiences of systems, some of which account their experiences of multiplicity during the “pre-trauma period” indicating the development of multiplicity before trauma: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S246874991730090X?via%3Dihub <<

Due to my weird childhood and my weird brain, I have this very unhelpful compulsion to conceal Everything I do from Everyone. I Cannot be observed performing any action, no matter how mundane. My nervous system is convinced I'm gonna, like, Get In Trouble for eating food at dinnertime or sleeping in my bed at bedtime.
I've taken to asking myself, "Okay does this task actually require subterfuge or am I stealing a balloon on Free Balloon Day"
I see from the notes that we're all havin a normal one 👍
It's great to get validation and confirmation that you're not alone in your experiences, but you also need to remember this: If you experience it, it's your experience, you don't need approval from others to prove it to be real. You don't need to ask everyone "is it possible to [experience]" because if you experience it, then it's possible. You experienced it, after all! No matter how uncommon, your experiences hold value, and that value isn't up to the community to decide.
My partner made this comic, and it is beautiful and amazing, and you’re all missing out by not seeing the original on paper because it’s even prettier there!
see i do actually love myself. my brain? it HATES me. that's the main difference between us.
