Got clocked by an elderly therian woman today. She complimented my wolf necklace, and I thanked her. Then she told me that she was a Fox. Not that she liked them, that she is one. And winked at me before leaving.
This woman had to be pushing 60. I live in a small town in the south. There is no welcome community here, and its honestly pretty shitty. But this elderly woman saw me, and knew what I was Immediately. It was nice. It was validating.
It made me feel less small to know there are others around me.
Personally, I find the community need for consistency to be a detriment to my overall experiences. "Kintypes are permanent" Well buddy I think these feelings can stick around forever, but shit happens and one day you may realize you're not a dinosaur (what happened to me) and end up switching labels a whole ton. And even if you find a label now that fits, you might end up changing it again in a year and that's totally valid!
So let's ditch the narrative that you need to find your forever kintype and start embracing being /wrong/. Let's show others it's ok to question yourself every couple of years, to take breaks, to leave the community for a bit and be able to come back without judgement. The pressure to "settle" basically is just so tiring. That's how you get onto the fast track of identity burnout.
Not to mention there is no permanent state of self! Sometimes you were a dinosaur, and then you suddenly aren't anymore. Sometimes you stop being something and then it comes back later. Sometimes an aspect of the self fades into the background for a while. Sometimes you're just not sure!
There's not nearly enough talk about hearttypes, so we wanted to to get conversations rolling by making a collaborative zine about it!
Otherhearted describes a person who has a strong fundamental connection to a species or character which impacts their core sense of self. This is most commonly described in terms of identifying with a being as opposed to identifying as one, although this is not always the case. - Otherkin Wiki
This zine will be a collection of artwork, writing and more all about being otherhearted. Whatever that means to you - both fiction and nonfiction pieces would be accepted. If you got something you wanna express about hearttypes, we'd love to hear it!
Full submission guidelines below the cut.
What Can I Submit?
Both fiction and nonfiction pieces are accepted. As long as what you have in mind fits the theme, it’ll probably be a-ok.
Off the top of our head, we’re thinking of:
Essays of your personal experiences
Short stories
Poetry
Mock advice columns
Alternative covers
Fictional advertisements
Comics
Recipes
We welcome you to think outside the box and share whatever inspires you about being otherhearted!
How to Participate
Send us an email at nova-dergs(@)proton.me with:
A name you would like the piece attributed to
Title of your submission
Any content warnings that you feel are necessary for the piece
Any social media handle or personal website you'd like linked in the contributor section
A logo or icon for the contributor section
**If you would like to stay anonymous let us know
Members of systems are welcome to submit individually or collectively. Please let us know your preference when it comes to attribution.
Once the deadline has passed, these submissions will be put into the zine and it will be posted on itch.io as a free PDF.
Submissions are due by November 15, 2026.
Submission Guidelines
Each individual may submit up to 3 works to be featured in From Within Our Hearts. Comics and multi-image works count as one piece. Individuals within a system may each submit up to 3 works. All work must be your own! Anyone caught plagiarizing or submitting AI-generated work will be barred from entering any future zines from us.
Written submissions and multi-part art entries should not exceed 10 pages. Please keep in mind the zine’s pages will be 8.5 x 11 and entries will be scaled accordingly to fit that size. We request all art submissions to be sent in either .jpg or .png file formats.
For stories that use multiple different fonts, we will do our best to preserve the general "feel" of your piece but cannot guarantee we will be able to use the exact fonts or sizes due to restrictions in what fonts we have access to, readability and overarching zine style.
Submissions Must Fit the Thematic Criteria of:
Being otherhearted / hearttype appreciation
That’s it! Go wild.
No portfolio or prior zine experience is needed to be included.
FAQ
Q: Where will the zine be hosted? What will it cost?
A: The zine will be hosted digitally on our itch.io and will be free to download.
Q: Is there a cap on total submissions to be included?
A: There is none, as long as the file doesn’t start getting too big for our computer we’ll do our best! If there are an unprecedented amount of submissions, we may have to delay the release. In the event that happens, we would communicate that through updates on our tumblr.
Q: Can I update my submission after it’s been submitted?
A: Yes you may, as long as it’s done before the submission deadline.
Q: Can I rescind my submission?
A: Yes you may, as long as it’s done before the submission deadline. This is because once we begin work on the zine, having to remove content mid-way through would throw off the formatting of everything else after. Please take this into account before submitting.
Q: Will this zine allow +18 entries?
A: No, nothing 18+ will be accepted.
Q: Can I submit already completed/published works?
A: Absolutely! It’s ok to submit past work that has been posted to your social media or website. Our only stipulation is that it cannot have been previously featured in another zine. This helps us keep each of our zines unique and distinct from others.
Q: What is your timeline for the project?
A: Our submission deadline is November 15, 2026. Our goal is to have the zine live by the end of the year. If something unforeseen happens and we are unable to make that deadline, we will post an update about it on our tumblr.
Q: I have another question!
A: Feel free to reach out to us at our email nova-dergs(@)proton.me with any other questions you have about the zine.
i think a lot of younger systems would be better off if they took a minute to stop stressing about roles or consciousness labels or headspaces or origins and just treat members of their system like random guys. that one headmate you can't tell the role of? they like hot chocolate with marshmallows and listening to the rain. you too. you need to be a random guy. being a random guy is good for everyone.

Reminder that you can separate headmates from each other with out locking one of them up. Saying that persecutors shouldn’t be locked away and beaten into submission isn’t abuse apologism, it’s saying that everyone deserves basic human dignity and rights regardless of their actions. Yes, it’s okay to put boundaries in place so that people don’t get hurt. Locking someone away from everyone else is not a boundary, it’s abuse. -Party, Medds
There is nothing inherently evil or wrong about how masculine or feminine you are and I wish people would stop acting like one is better than the other. The way you act and speak as a person says more about what kind of person you are than your gender presentation. There is plenty of people capable of being horrible people and there are plenty of people that are capable of being good people. It's a choice, gender has nothing to do with it.
If I really want to get into it, I could say that being or looking gender non conforming is a feminist action, stepping away, breaking away from the binary is the action- but being a woman itself is not an action- it's a gender. I don't think anyone likes when I say that though
Sometimes, you'll learn that things you assumed about your system before are wrong, or have changed.
This doesn't mean you lied. This doesn't mean you're a bad person, or a bad system. That's how many things work in life – we make the best guesses we can to understand them with the information we have, and sometimes we learn more/better later, or circumstances change. Something so personal, so malleable, so internal and up to interpretation like one's own system is especially likely to fall into this. This does not mean you did something wrong.
Maybe you assumed your system was larger or smaller than it really was. Maybe your usual fronting organization completely changed. Maybe those headmates you thought were introjects of your OCs actually existed before they were made. Maybe you woke up one day a lot more or less separate than you were before. Maybe you learned that you've been using the incorrect definition for a term. Maybe you remembered something that completely flips your view on something related to your system. It happens. It's okay. None of this means you were lying when you spoke on your experiences before, and none of this means you shouldn't or "aren't allowed" to speak about your system just because you might one day be wrong (or, in the case of change, "wrong") again one day. If everyone knew everything about themselves from the moment they were born, and could only ever speak about the final form they would eventually have in life, this would be a very different world.
Take it easy. This is an age-old quest; you're doing fine trying to understand yourself. You don't need to get it perfectly on your first attempt to be worthy of respect. Just give it your best go.
Politician factive culture is unironically wanting to be a spin doctor after university, because system masking has given me great practice in, for lack of a better term, making shit up on the spot.

anyway. shoutout to sourced sysmates who's identity doesn't line up with their sources. you don't need to justify yourself or why you are the way you are you. you don't have to restrict yourself or lie to yourself because you think people won't accept you. youre allowed to be yourself. maybe you'll have to hide it from dangerous people, but know that there's nothing wrong with you for being who you are.
this especially goes for those who don't share their sources queer identity. you are not erasure. you are an important person as well and anyone who insists you shouldnt be allowed to exist as yourself isnt worth your time.
Happy disability pride to dissociative people, those with personality disorders, people with schizophrenia, and everyone elsewise labelled ‘insane’ and ‘crazy’ by annoying assholes. I hope you all have a pleasant & comfortable July and beyond
shoutout to small systems! often the plural community overlooks small systems, which i find unfortunate.
so today, i wanted to wish small systems a good week!
shoutout to systems with just 2 members, shoutout to systems with lesd than 15 alters, shoutout to anyone who considers themselves to have a lower sysmate count!
shoutout to small systems who form new members often, but lose them just as quickly!
shoutout to small systems who very rarely form new members!
shoutout to small systems who dont feel welcomed in plural spaces! we welcome you here!

internalised misogyny (arguably) is the act of perpetuating or upholding the misogynistic and patriarchal systems against women and those perceived as women by someone who has also experienced those systems of oppression and is projecting the harm they have experienced onto others instead of unpacking said harm.
