"The original literary vampires represented carnal knowledge. At their foundation, whether we're looking at Stoker, Polidori, Carmilla, vampires represent a defiance of societal gender and sexual norms. They represent a rejection of conformity, of the default, and specifically of heteronormative and prudish structures." -V.E. Schwab
I think a year or so after canon, Jiang Cheng should one day come over to Gusu Lan for some sort of sect conference or whatever, and Wei Wuxian should try to meet him all nervously laughing in Lan robes (<- he's trying to move on, it's not going well), and this sets back Yunmeng Shuangjie reconciliation by fifty thousand years. Jiang Cheng wasn't even looking for him! (<- desperately sneaking around like a thief to avoid running into wangxian). Lan Wangji should be pleased by this development except before leaving Jiang Cheng said: "you didn't even like <insert Gusu Lan staple>" looking furious and vicious (<- he was ten seconds from bursting into tears) and Wei Ying had not informed Lan Wangji about this?? He had to find it from Jiang Wanyin of all people??? What do you mean you can tolerate some things for my sect Wei Ying, I do not have any issues from my parents whatsoever. My whole year has been ruined.
Ning Yingying and Mobei-jun friendship is so underrated. They somehow keep ending up in the same places because they know the same people. Ning Yingying chatters all the time to fill the silence while Mobei-jun stands there all stoic. One day Mobei-jun mentions something that Ning Yingying had said a long time ago and Ning Yingying goes "...you've be listening to me?" And then Ning Yingying declares that they are best friends and Mobei-jun does not say anything to deny it.

Love how people in the fandom write fics about Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian magically becoming super contrite and apologetic over knowing the other's sacrifice for them meanwhile one of those made up a whole new reality to hide what he did and the other repressed it so hard it literally needed a pov switch to reveal it to the audience. They make me sickkkkk

"This is tea I made with my own hands. Why don't you want to drink it?" Jin Guangyao pushed the teacup away once more, explaining in a kind tone, "it's precisely because you made the tea with your own hands that I don't dare to drink it."
thanks @madtomedgar for the inspiration, you were so right about this
Shen Yuan being a CEO is so much funnier in the context of a sugar baby Binghe AU.
People on social media thinks Binghe is using this sick old man CEO for his money and trashing him for it and insulting Binghe.
Meanwhile this is Bingyuan...
Binghe:babeeee come sleep with me!!
Shen Yuan: hold on Binghe, i have to doxx this twitter user and attack them on my 20 alt accounts!
Even funnier when Binghe turns out to be a ceo of an even bigger company but he's still holding onto shen yuans arms and batting his lashes and whining "gege can you buy that for me?? Pleaaaseeee??"
Like father like son...
The Phantom of the Opera: I was born with facial deformities that are so horrific that even my own mother couldn't bear to look at me.
Me: So that's why you have to live as an outcast in the basements of the opera house?
The Phantom, who has been an admired performer, palace architect, royal executioner, and chief contractor of the opera house who is able to go out in public with no alteration to his face except a false nose and mustache: No, that's a separate choice that I've made.

☕ NMJ broke the sworn brotherhood oath before JGY did
He certainly tried to kill JGY before JGY started music-poisoning him!
Interestingly in the novel we don’t see them swear the oath or learn the oath they swear; the only thing we do know is that it seems to be unusually violent:
Lan XiChen, “Since Brother chose to make the oath with you, it means that he has indeed approved of you.”
Jin GuangYao spoke with dejection, “But, Brother, didn’t you hear what he said in the oath? Every sentence meant something more. ‘Face a thousand accusing fingers, be torn from limb to limb’—this was clearly a warning for me. I… I’ve never heard of such an oath before.”
(Exiled Rebels, ch 50)
But yeah, I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to literally attempt to kill your sworn brother.
Oh just to throw in a fun fact: the part which Exiled Rebels translates as “be torn from limb to limb” is actually “五马分尸” in Chinese (literally to die with body dismembered by five horses). It’s an especially cruel method of execution reserved for the most heinous of criminals, such as a subject who commits treason against his country. In it, a rope is tied to the person’s head and their limbs. These ropes are tied in turn to five different horses. The horses are then prodded to gallop in different directions, tearing the person apart while they’re alive. The person’s corpse also gets desecrated as their dismembered parts are dragged along the dirty ground. So together, the lines “a thousand accusing fingers” and “die with body dismembered by five horses” paints a picture of a public execution watched by a jeering crowd.
For anyone who’s had a passing exposure to the trope of an oath of sworn brotherhood through novels or c-dramas or even the most famous brotherhood in Three Kingdoms, it’s very easy to agree with JGY that one has “never heard of such an oath before”. Like seriously, wtf.
Usually the vibes of these oaths are very chivalrous and romantic — “we’ll share our blessings as well as our burdens together (有福同享,有难同当)”. Or they’ll repeat the refrain from the famous oath by Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei “we ask not to be born on the day, same month, same year. Only to die on the same day, same month, same year” (不求同年同月同日生,但求同年同月同日死). The overall theme of the oath is that the sworn brothers are in this together, and that they’ll be willing to die for each other in battle. The loyalty and devotion displayed in such scenes is very moving.
At most such an oath will mention that those who break it will incur the wrath of/be punished by heaven and the people 天人共诛/怒/戮, especially if the brotherhood was formed to serve a higher purpose like defend the country. Or it won’t be mentioned at all because such oaths are made in confidence, trust and mutual admiration, rather than on a contractual basis.
So for NMJ to get this specific about the method of death? And to invoke the most horrific mode of execution in chinese culture, in an oath that is supposed to be founded upon camaraderie? Wtf NMJ. You’re not supposed to do that!!! I think this scene is supposed to radically disabuse the reader of the romantic image that is usually evoked by the trope of three brothers coming together to pledge an oath of brotherhood that deepens their devotion to each other, especially if that was how they imagined the 3Zun brotherhood began. I think it implies that there was something messed up about the 3Zun brotherhood right from the start.
Novel Raw quoted from Enjing: 第50章 狡童 蓝曦臣道:“大哥既然当初和你结义,这就是认可你了。” 金光瑶苦闷地道:“可是,二哥啊,你没听他的结义词是怎么说的吗?句句意有所指,‘千夫所指、五马分尸’,分明是在警告我。我……从没听过这样的结义词……”
#funnily enough. nmj breaks their oath first. and gets dismembered #after dying horribly in public #so uh. good job there assuming you could never do something wrong dude (via madtomedgar)
and what if the character wasn't directly rejected but at every turn they were made to experience situations that made them feel completely irrefutably unwanted. what then
I always imagined Fairy as a really big dog, like the wolves in Princess Mononoke. So, watching the donghua and the live series was a bit disappointing 😆
I drew her here as a big husky 💖

zhanchengxian where chengxian happens first is fun because jiang cheng is possessive and not very nice and lan wangji is jealous and miserable and znchxn where wangxian happens first is fun because lan wangji is possessive and not very nice and jiang cheng is jealous and doesn't think anyone could ever love him however znchxn where zhancheng happens first is not fun at all because wei wuxian is jealous and possessive and not very nice and also has the ability to wield resentful energy via the dastardly and evil yin hu fu
