Posted @withregram ⢠@pacingpixie I've used both before but am deffos leaning towards 'non-Disabled' now. What do we think? ID: There are two headings: 'able-bodied' and 'non-Disabled'. Underneath there is a list of features. On the 'able-bodied' side it says 'By focusing on how someone is 'bodied', can be seen to overlook non-physical disabilities', 'Supports the medical model of disability by considering the condition of the body', 'Doesn't align with identity or person-first language' and 'Doesn't centre Disabled people'. On the 'non-Disabled' side, it lists: 'By focusing on whether someone is Disabled, the term is broader, including all disabilities,' 'Supports the social model by considering membership of a social group not impairment,' 'Aligns with Identity-first language' and 'Centres Disabled people'. #Disability #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityPride #Ableism #AbleismExists #DisabilityCommunity #LanguageMatters #KnowBetterDoBetter #CripplePunk #DisabilityStudies #ChronicIllness #ChronicallyAwesome #DisabledAndProud #TheFutureIsAccessible #BabeWithAMobilityAid #WheelchairDontCare #YoungAndDisabled #DiversityAndInclusion #Spoonie #SpoonieLife #Unchargeables #Inclusion #AccessibilityForAll #DisabilityIsDiversity #WordsMatter #AccessIsLove #DisabilityJustice #DisabilityAdvocacy #DisabilityActivism #Activism https://www.instagram.com/p/CTqPZ66pwOW9Wdb3kZeqcHf0mQpec6iSYpOip00/?utm_medium=tumblr
āMy advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your disability doesnāt prevent you doing well, and donāt regret the things it interferes with. Donāt be disabled in spirit as well as physically.āĀ -Stephen Hawking āā Iām guilty of using the term āDifferently Abledā in the past. I recently learned itās offensive because it implies that disabled people lack āable bodiesā or the ability to use their bodies well. So I wanted to make a shirt for those who identify as ādisabled.ā The word doesnāt have to be a scarlet letter; it could be a title of power. In this world thatās built for neurotypicals and those without disabilities, consider the strength that a ādisabledā person possesses. To live with SPD in an environment with bright lights and loud sounds. To communicate while deaf even though most people donāt know ASL. To know your surroundings even when blind. To make this world accessible - even when the opportunities are inaccessible. To me, thereās nothing more powerful than that. So, I designed this āPhenomenally Disabledā t-shirt. In the word āDisabled,ā thereās an āIā that uses the infinity symbol, an āAā thatās in ASL, an āLā thatās in Braille, and a āDā that uses the disabled symbol. Like Mr. Hawking said, āDonāt be disabled in spirit as well as physically.ā āā Description: Picture 1 - A girl in a wheelchair wearing a black t-shirt that reads, āPhenomenally Disabled.ā Picture 2 - Front facing picture of the t-shirt. #InvisibleIllness #DeafTalent #ActuallyAutistic #DisaBodyPosi #AbleismExists #TheBarriersWeFace #neurodiversity #disabled #disability #wheelchair #disabilityawareness #chronicillness #inclusion #love #accessibility #paraplegic #motivation #amputee #cerebralpalsy #nevergiveup #accessible https://www.instagram.com/p/CMh6eUcBghP/?igshid=1v2qpqfm6sdgv

Had another fantastic day of adventuring, coffee, grumpy bus drivers, dancing, and yummy food with my fantastic friend Lucy from @rubicondance yesterday š Me and The Lovely Lucy on the bus yesterday š we had a bit of a challenge getting on our first bus (we get four; two there, two back!) because the driver told us the ramp was broken and then it took three tries and me being very stern and stubborn, and Lucy and two other people waiting for the bus, to get him to line his bus up properly with the curb so I could board the bus... when we arrived at our stop, another driver was waiting to take over and pulled the supposedly ābrokenā ramp out immediately šš” dude had obviously fibbed to try and discourage us from getting in the bus! Luckily he hadnāt taken my determination into account! Think Luce summed it up with what she said about the driver āno need for him to be such a dickheadā š! The challenges you face as a disabled person using public transport, eh š¤·š»āāļø?! (Btw, I tweeted Cardiff Buses on Twitter and complained!) #adventuring #takingthebus #thatsachallange #myfriendusawesome #ableismexists https://www.instagram.com/p/B3fZrqhhlQe/?igshid=1hdgcj773cka3
In San Antonio, the disabled community is very unified and willing to assist families and individuals in obtaining services.Ā Agencies, families, and community stakeholders work hard to promote an environment of access and inclusion.Ā Many organizations pool their resources to further the disability rights movement, on a legislative level, by retaining political lobbyist to focus on a defined yearly agenda.Ā On a local level, agencies that are disability specific, such as the Down-syndrome Association or the Autism Treatment Center, provide focused disability services to meet the needs of that particular population.Ā However, each center works in partnership with agencies and individuals who have differing diagnoses so that anyone with disabilities can be referred to an appropriate agency.Ā One thing that stood out to me when interviewing āIā about his community, was the incredible smile that came across his face when he spoke about successfully completing the rank of Eagle Scout after 8 years of work.Ā āIā said he wanted everyone to know that his disability did not stop him from doing everything the scouts required.Ā āIā received incredible support from the Boy Scouts of America, who launched a program to extend the age for individuals with disabilities to 21.Ā This accommodation allows individuals extra time to achieve the highly regarded rank of Eagle Scout.Ā San Antonio is one of the few areas in which special needs scouts can be a part of a troop that has trained leaders who specialize in mentoring disabled individuals.Ā As social workers, we must continue to advocate for self determination when dealing with clients who are disabled.Ā By practicing from a strengths based perspective,Ā encouraging person first language, and practicing trauma informed care, we can continue to uplift and support individuals with disabilities.Ā Ā
