one of the top 10 cute doges i've ever posted i think
how do you feel about games that have vitiligo customisation options? I have vitiligo myself and while it can be nice to be able to make a character who looks more like me, im also very aware of the reality for many players that this further reinforces the aesthetic appeal of vitiligo, especially if it's done in a fantasy game. I find it weird and fetishistic how many people make an OC with vitiligo with zero acknowledgement for how it affects them - it feels so strongly of fishing for woke points by giving their character an autoimmune disorder and visible differences, but still in a way they find aesthetically pleasing.
I feel the exact same way anon š
Like you can tell the devs added it as a customization feature and not an inclusivity feature
Iāve noticed a huge uptick in people treating it like an aesthetic after BG3 and Dragon Age Veilguard came out
Also it feels like they donāt even do the vitiligo correctly with the sliders eitherā¦
So Im a white girl with vitiligo right? One of my favorite bits when someone points it out is to say "yea pretty soon mayo is gonna be too spicy for me" which is funny to me cuz its stupid *and* im a spice freak.
Also for everyone that asks stuff like āhow to give non-humans markings that donāt resemble vitiligo or if I can give them markings at allā I feel like itās a very simple answer as to whether or not itās obvious that it is or isnāt jsut by looking at it for five seconds š
For example if your shark mermaid had vitiligo like patterns because theyāre half great white and great whites have white underbellies that feels weird
But if youāre doing something like the naāvi where their patterns are darker than their skin tone and feature a natural and subtle gradient that doesnāt resemble vitiligo in the slightest itās fine.
Also I feel like a good question to ask yourself is: why do the patterns need to be lighter than the skin tone? Most animals, minus many marine based ones and some birds, have darker patterns on their fur rather than lighter ones
TLDR: if it doesnāt look like vitiligo it probably wonāt get mistaken, if it does maybe ask why that is the choice and if thereās anything you can change to make it less so

looking for moots now than ive been using this account more again so pls reblog this if you can <3
im Ɣine, she/they and from Ireland ! I would love to make like minded people who are also interested in psychology, art, celtic spirituality, D&D, fantasy books (specifically Robin Hobb and Patrick Rothfuss), video games (specifically Skyrim, Dishonored, Elden Ring), disability rights, lgbtq+ rights, hiking, environmentalism, nature and animals. there's probably more but that's all I can think of for now lmao
I also have Complex PTSD, Tourettes and Vitiligo so I discuss that sometimes and would love to have more moots who maybe have these also ! i dont label my sexuality or gender im very open to all genders/expressions
I am an artist and my art account is @cceapaire , there I paint fantasy characters, D&D characters, but also paintings exploring my feelings around my trauma, appearance, and gender expression ! I am inspired by realistic and impressionist oil paintings !
things i want to see more in vitiligo representation
Characters who developed vitiligo from stress
Characters with mucosal vitiligo
Characters with vitiligo universalis
Characters who have other autoimmune diseases alongside vitiligo
Characters whose vitiligo changes or develops throughout the story
Fashionable characters with vitiligo where their vitiligo isnt treated like an accessory
On the opposite side, characters with vitiligo who are allowed to be unfashionable or messy
This is just a concept for how I imagine Selenaās vitiligo progression would go
If I were to make this into an actual story (like a comic for example), Iām thinking of making her vitiligo a way to show how much time progresses throughout yk?
