Can someone do that graph thing with the frequency of names over time and put a dot on it when the muppets and sesame street came out
Sesame Street started in 1969 and basically made the popularity of these names absolutely TANK
Thanks to the muppets, you just can't call your daughter Miss Piggy anymore
best advice I have for therapy is that you canβt go in there expecting your shrink to be robin williams from good will hunting, or florence nightingale, or your mom, or god, or the emotional equivalent of a housekeeper. also canβt cede them the power of letting them be the primary source for your psychoeducation.
theyβre not your superior, youβre not equals, theyβre there to support you.
You are allowed to disagree with your therapist. You are allowed to say "I think you might be off-base about this." Sometimes they put the cart before the horse or don't understand your personal chronology. I'm seeing someone who wants to pin my quitting smoking on some other problems. No, these issues existed before I quit smoking, that's not an accurate assessment. She didn't seem to believe me because for her it would have been a very tidy cause -> effect. I had to clarify things for her. You are not correct. That's not what this is. Try again
You don't need to worry that you're going to hurt their feelings by disagreeing with them. You know your situation better than anyone else. You're allowed to course-correct. You're also allowed to say "I'm not comfortable talking about that right now." Sometimes you need to build trust with a therapist before you're ready to unpack certain things, and that's OK. Therapists aren't cops, they're not your parent or your boss, you are allowed to say no
So Hank Green got caught using AI and itβs a whole huge blow up, and I really donβt have much interest in adding to the pile on.
However, I do think this case is great example of what happens when smart people decide they can use these systems βresponsibly.β
Letβs put aside the plagiarism and the energy use for a second (not that these donβt matter, but theyβre not relevant to my point at the moment) and pretend these systems were made with entirely properly obtained info and ran on only solar, but otherwise were entirely the same. If youβre a person, you might think βokay, Iβm going to only use this to come up with ideas for my next paper: Iβm going to do all the research myself and the writing, Iβm just gonna brainstorm topics.β
The thing is, even if youβre trying to limit use to just βbrainstormingβ the chatbot isnβt going to limit itself to just brainstorming. You might ask it βwhat should I write about involving Greek historyβ and it may suggest βthe plague of Athensβ but itβs also going to suggest some βbasic infoβ on the plague of Athens that you might end up picking up and deciding your topic is. Itβs going to provide you with βresearch.β And even if you decide to check that research yourself, thatβs still setting you down a specific path you might not have picked organically.
And speaking of double checking its βresearchβ, fact checking is a time heavy process. Not only now do you have to read the original text the bot provided, but you also have to compare it line by line with the summary the bot provided. Thatβs more time than it would have taken to just read the article by itself. And with any time heavy task, people are going to get lazy. And in original research being lazy might mean skimming a paper or an abstract, chatbots allow you to be lazy without looking at the article at all.
And soon enough, despite telling yourself you were only going to use it for brainstorming, you have offloaded topic generation, research and eventually even drafting because thatβs what these bots are intended to do. They are not meant to serve as research tools or help brainstorm or serve as a bouncing off board: they are built to encourage maximum engagement. And that means if you go at them with the best of ethical intentions, they are built to tempt you to use them as much as possible, regardless of whatever line you drew in the sand for yourself.
Anyway, my main thought here is you are not smart enough to outwit the dopamine machine. It wants your attention and nothing more. Do not assume you can resist just because you know whatβs under the hood.
having the Aviation Accident Investigations Autismβ’οΈ has actually done wonders for the way I process and respond to my own fuck-ups
And I don't just mean "oh, my little work mistake is actually nothing compared to a fiery crash that kills people," either. The reason commercial flight is so many orders of magnitude safer than any other form of transportation is because after every accident and incident, an independent regulatory body investigated it with the express goal of figuring out exactly what happened, why, and how to prevent the same thing from ever happening againβnot to root out which person deserved the blame or the liability.
It's a simple, shockingly effective idea. It's also worlds away from how most people approach their own mistakes and the mistakes of others.
Because itβs never just one personβs fault. And even when it is, it still isnβt.Β
The sharpest, best-trained pilots make worse decisions when they're tired or sick or stressed out, so there's two of them. The most dedicated and experienced air traffic controllers garble an instruction over the radio sometimes, so pilots are trained to always repeat clearances back to catch misunderstandings quickly. The best and brightest maintenance mechanic still overlooks a screw or misconnects a wire once or twice in her career, so aircraft systems are built with two or three or four layers of redundancy, and pilots are exhaustively trained to deal with failures safely.Β
Everyone eventually has a bad day. Every component breaks down. Every computer gets a bad a Windows update and spirals into a reboot doom loop. If itβs possible for one personβs mistake to domino into a mushroom cloud of a fuckup, then that task is too critical to be one person's sole responsibility. The accident sequence starts with the design of the systemβso how do you improve the system to keep it from happening again?
oh yeah. The βmodern commercial aviation is the safest form of transportβ thing only applies to planes, btw. A helicopter is a beautiful metal horse that wants to break its legs and die so so so badly

i am not immune to a well choreographed fight scene with a fun song in the background
still drives me up the wall that gideon kissed harrow's forehead. like mind you she still hated harrow up until the pool scene and was mad at her for not making things clear and hiding things and keeping her in the dark. and yet her first thought after hearing all of harrow's agonies was to kiss her forehead and touch her face. like i dont even mean this in a wow so romantic way necessarily, i mean thats such an intimate way to react to someone. not just hugging her but literally kissing her forehead and pushing the hair from her temple after VOWING you hate her fucking guts. its such a raw and impulsive and genuine reaction and it makes me want to dig a grave for myself

Alecto was angry, and raised her up, and kissed her. The child did not cry out, though blood fell from her lips and tongue, and she was wounded sore. For Alecto knew not how to kiss, except such as it involved the mouth and teeth. And Alecto said to her, Why are you not appeased? That is how meat loves meat.
I love u Alecto π
