my latest cartoon for New Scientist
I wonder if this is how my advisors and supervisors see me
My two yr old is looking through a book about prehistoric art and she saw a picture of those cave painting of hands and she held up her own and said "hand!" And I gotta be honest. That hit
Oh my god, this reminds me of the childrens garden of our local botanical garden. There’s one section that’s called the prehistoric lives garden or smth, and it’s full of native plants that indigenous people 2000 years ago would have eaten and used as medicine, etc. And within this little garden, there’s an adobe style playhouse, which for some reason (probably lighting reasons) has no roof, which means the rusty red dirt floor is often quite muddy.
And this series of events has led to my favorite interactive art piece ever.
Handprints.
Little tiny handprints at the bottom. Big teenager and adult sized handprints at the top. Handprints upon handprints upon handprints, a modern day continuation of an ancient tradition.
Most of the people who contributed were probably doing so because they thought it would be fun, not for any deep philosophical reason. Heck, you can tell based on the height of the larger handprints that their owners were having a jumping competition. They didn’t think about the fact that they were creating art in the exact same way the earliest humans created art. They didn’t think about the fact that humans have always been and will always be humans, and the ways we interact with each other and the world have always stayed the same in the most important ways.
But I did. I thought about it. And I am in love with humanity all over again.

EVERYONE SHUT THE FUCK UP SCIENTISTS AT THE SCHMIDT OCEAN INSTITUTE HAVE FOOTAGE OF A LIVE COLOSSAL SQUID FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🦑‼️🦑‼️🦑‼️🦑‼️🦑‼️🦑
for context, scientists have know about these mfs for like a HUNDRED YEARS but only now have they actually seen one ALIVE !!
Not only Colossal Squid, but Colossal BABY Squid, only a foot long!!
If I had a nickel for each time I had a nosebleed during a research meeting, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
I think Tumblr'll appreciate this! University of Wisconsin-Madison / SSEC
what's with math and chalkboards? i used to like whiteboards and now i not only don't like them but seemingly no longer remember how to use them. i drank too greedily of the chalk, became addicted, and now resent its absence
maybe this time picking at Textures on my skin will lead to being silky smooth

your life is not an optimization problem
as in you'll never achieve the perfect daily routine, sleep schedule, coping mechanisms, mannerisms, fashion sense etc. even after years and years of healing and improvement and self-discovery. you will never be so good at life that you manage to utilize every waking moment. its great to be productive and all but sometimes you'll suck ass. sometimes you'll take eight hours to be done with a twenty minute job. you'll prioritize the wrong thing. you'll sleep for 12 hrs just to avoid being awake. you'll relapse. and you'll relapse again. you'll forget to turn in the assignment. you'll order too little food. life is far too large and complex for you to even experience it completely, much less try to make sense of and control it. you can't. please give up on that and be at peace with the hours you lose. they are not separate from your life.

Why are mathematicians* so USELESS at simple arithmetic? You're telling me I possess knowledge that would get me hailed as a lord 2000 years ago, but if I had two bags of wheat in one hand and three in the other, I would say there's six bags? What the fuck
*it's me, I'm mathematicians
y'know, one of the goofiest things I've learnt from the desmos community is that { } with nothing inside equals 1
but that's not just it, you can also add { }s
and it functions just the same as adding 2 1s
but therein lies the funniest part, that you can perform almost any function on it, from minus
to exponents
to even factorials!
and lists too!!!
you can even compare solutions of { }s in { }s
there's almost no restrictions, if you can do it with numbers, you can do it with { }
and this leads me to what I've seen a lot of people calling "desmosfuck" after the infamous programming language brainfuck, and it restricts you by not allowing any letters and no numbers, that includes sin, log, x, y and all the others. The only thing you can make out of { }s are points and numbers though, but thankfully that's usually enough to make a bunch of stuff.
like, if you need π, just use (-0.5)!^2
you need e? you already have π and i, just use e^(iπ)=-1 and rearrange it to e=-1^(1/(iπ)) and get -1^((π^-1)(i^-1))
want phi? sure, just use it's surd representation of (1+sqrt(5))/2
okay, but what if you really wanna do functions? well, if you're desperate, you can sorta do that, you just gotta use a concentration of points.
cos(x) and sin(x)? use the identities
cos seems easier
and x just has to be a dense list of numbers
now that we have x, let us... REWRITE!
that's dense... buuuut, it does the job as soon as we add the x part to the x coordinate!
absolute insanity
you can also get sin by subtracting x by half of pi
awesome
here's tan, btw
go play around with it yourself! it's very silly
