i just can't convey the frustration and sorrow that it's been to grow up at first without the internet and then watching it bloom into this useful, fun, connecting force you sometimes spent time on, only for it to degrade into this constant oppressive waste of time and energy where people are constantly pumping out algorithmically designed content for max algorithmic appeal and even the most simple search generates either no results or an infinite abyss of ai generated slop none of which is usable or correct. we briefly had a library of alexandria and then fed it into a paper shredder so advertisers could sell a random mash of pulp back to us at a premium.
we briefly had a library of alexandria and then fed it into a paper shredder so advertisers could sell a random mash of pulp back to us at a premium.
Here is a skill that many of us are going to need for survival: how to tell if someone is offering to let you lie.
The tip-off phrase is "If [circumstance] was true, then we/I could do [helpful thing.]" This is not a guarantee that the person is offering, but it should tell you "I am being informed of a way to improve things."
Your confirmation phrase is "What documentation would that require?" This is essentially asking them "if people come asking me to prove this, will I be able to? Or will they not come at all?"
The answer you are hoping for with the confirmation phrase is "Just tell me if it's true, and I'll put it on the form." Note that this is not a direct instruction to lie, because they can't tell you that.
If they didn't mean to extend an offer to lie or this is a situation where they can't, then they'll list off something like your paystubs or your birth certificate. Your response back in that case is "Thanks, I'll tell my friends who qualify." This clears you of any concerns that you may have been considering lying.
The more complex answer is when they answer by giving you a form on the spot. Your job, in this case, is to scan the form and see if what they are asking you can be meaningfully verified by an official source.
Things that can be verified by an official source include, but are not limited to, your age, legal sex, income, veteran status, and place of residence. It's not generally a good idea to lie about these on official documents.
Be smart, and be practical. Do what you need to in order to stay alive, and keep an ear out for the people offering to help you do so.
im having trouble understanding this in the abstract, could someone give an example of a hypothetical situation this would apply to?
"This medication is covered for FREE if you are quitting smoking. Are you working on quitting?"
*me, thinking about how I quit smoking in 2018 and it is now the year of our lord 2024* "Oh yeah, still working very hard. You know how those cravings can hit."
*please note, how I omitted the truth in the example. I didn't ANNOUNCE it been 6 years SINCE I ALREADY QUIT. I said that I was working hard because cravings are still a thing (6 years later not said out loud). The fact I haven't have a SINGLE one in 4 years [I was Weak during lockdown but could not finish a cig anymore] is irrelevant. The doctor asking me was *nudge nudge wink wink* pointing out that labeling my cig use as "not quite quit yet" would cut some costs on medications.
Sometimes the 'lies' you are being an opportunity to nod along for are just ommissions of truth. Like- still being an active smoker for easier access to other treatments or random pains being worse than YOU personally find them. "If X is true, Y could be an option for you" is a way to allow you to snip off details to make X TECHNICALLY true. They are asking you to be a VAGUE fuck- not a pedantic one. For BOTH of y'all's plausible deniability.
"So these symptoms prevent you from doing [X, Y, Z] activities?"
Even if YOU think you are mildly inconvenienced at best, 'OH YEAH- the generalized fatigue/nagging pain/light headed feeling just makes it so hard to [whatever activity you just find more choresome in those circumstances]!'
I have also had it happen at random coffee shops. Or vape shops.
"How much cash do you have on you? Conveniently this is on sale RIGHT NOW for you for 5 dollars less than that IF it happens to be your birthday. It's your birthday... RIGHT??????"
Is the exact same concept. "You have a coupon right?" "And you saw the BOGO deal and remembered to mention it, RIGHT? Cuz mentioning it before I complete the transaction will make these BOGO..."
You may ask, “why would someone ask me to lie?”
You all ever seen that scene in the Incredibles where Mr. incredible basically tells this little old lady to get her stuff approved? It’s a cartoonish example of what happens all the time in real life.
You ever seen a cashier conveniently forget to ring up baby formula for a single mother, and then wish her a lovely day?
Sometimes, people look out for each other. Pay attention and let them. The world is spooky out there; we’re all in it together.
This is a good read and worth paying attention to. The human urge to help out other beings is strong, and people are prone to trying to indicate things like this to you.
This post gives some good steer on tasting if that's what is happening, a good read.
My partner needed my signature on a thing for the insurance company. I was out of the country. The nice lady looked at him and said "you should go check in the parking lot" and he explained that I was Out of the Country and she shook her head and said again (more patiently, and enunciating clearly) "you should CHECK in the PARKING LOT" and nodded at him, handing him the form and a pen.
He finally understood.
this is the number one reason i miss being a cashier. helping people and sticking it to the man at the same time, in tiny little ways every day. 😌
Important addendum:
If somebody does this for you, and you are at any point in a position to give Feedback On Your Experience — no they didn't. Don't tell Yelp, don't tell the customer satisfaction survey, for the love of fuck don't tell their boss, even if you mean it as praise. "Employee was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional" end of review.
Don't accidentally narc on someone doing you a solid.
Do not waste your tears over fascists. "He was somebody's this, he was somebody's that". Michael Brown was someone's son, and so was Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Emmett Till. Sandra Bland was someone's daughter, and so was Breonna Taylor, while she slept. Sonya Massey, too, was someone's baby girl. Latasha Harlins was someone's baby. Martin Luther King Jr was somebody's son, husband and father, and yet the FBI killed him. Fred Hampton, Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba. Hind Rajab, someone's baby. Khaled Nabhan, and his granddaughter, soul of his soul. Refaat Alareer. And on and on and on, every martyr, every Black and Palestinian person whose been told over and over again how cheap our blood is, how NOTHING our life is. I do not weep over the death of white supremacist, I fucking cheer. One less of them means a Black or brown child can live another day.

Hey someone suggested I use ChatGPT to figure out adulting today, and as I was going through the mental list of places I'd rather look, I realized "beloved strangers on Tumblr dot net" was on that list.

"I don't like any of these extremists on the right or the left! I just think we need the basic common sense middle ground stuff. Like, the government ought to be providing everyone healthcare, that's just basic. Every other developed country in the world can do it, why not us? We're Americans, we're supposed to be world leaders. And why are we letting rich people accumulate so much money they can buy our entire government? We need sensible tax rates like we had in the 1950's. We don't need the government interfering in family medical decisions or what gender people want to be, talk about your activist governments! What's next, they wanna micromanage us like they did in the 1800's? Send women to jail for wearing pants? Come on, let trans people go to the goddamn bathroom, what's wrong with people? And I don't understand why we need a freaking secret police force to terrorize people whose visas expired. Why don't we just let anyone immigrate and get a green card if they can pass a background check, that way they get paid minimum wages like Americans do and corporations can't pay them super cheaply to get out of fair wages? It'd be better for all Americans that way. You wanna enforce customs at the border, sure, we don't want smuggling, but the way ICE currently is, half the people who work there get a hardon when they think about terrorizing immigrants. In my opinion the whole department's gotta go and we go back to the way things used to be. "
Like... you use the short version of those opinions, people have been taught "these are extreme opinions!" But you express the exact same information a different way and people go, yeah, that makes perfect sense. Kind of like "defund the police" is scary but if you say, "let's take some of the funds we're currently allocating to the police, and give them to specialists who're good at dealing with mentally ill and desperate people, so those people get the right kind of help and don't get shot. You know, if all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail... and the police have guns, so every problem looks like a thing to shoot. Let's keep them targeted on what they're good at and give the work you don't need a gun for to people who don't need a gun to do it," people think that's perfectly reasonable. "Fund non-violent alternatives to police for non-violent issues like welfare checks" is another way you can phrase it, which is shorter.

Unions are trash. Theyll Destroy a whole company for firing a shitty worker.
unions are the reason you aren’t paid 2.50 an hour with steel beams about to bust ya head open shut up lol
Unions are why you have 5 day, 40 hour full-time work weeks. Unions are why they have to pay you in actual dollars instead of “company credits” that you can only spend at the company-owned stores. Unions are why there are fucking fire exits at your place of work. Unions are why it’s not okay for your supermarket ground beef to be any percentage human.
You think your company pays you out of the goodness of their hearts? Or even out of “market pressure?” The “job market” is a myth perpetuated by the capitalists. Corporations would pay you nothing if they could get away with it. And you argue “oh, but if they paid me nothing I’d just go to another one.” Wrong. Because to maximize profits, they all want to pay you nothing. Corporations exist to maximize profits while reducing risk for investors. It’s part of their entire function to find ways to cut costs as much as possible, and that includes finding ways to pay you nothing.
Unions are your defense against that. You think all a union does is strike? If you pay union dues, a lot of that is spent on lobbyists in various governments reminding your lawmakers that you have rights as a living human being that a corporation should not be able to stomp all over. Unions hire lawyers so that if you’re fired for bullshit reasons, the union can stand up for you against your boss. They’re called unions because workers are uniting to pool resources so that they can stand up to these corporate overlords with more money than God. Unions exist because you might not have the words, resources, or time to fight workplace injustices all by yourself. That’s the whole fucking point.
And if a business shuts down because a union is striking, it’s because the business was abusing people and didn’t deserve to be in business anyway. Don’t make excuses for the corporations. They already have trillions of dollars and a couple million lawyers to do that for themselves. They don’t need your help.
The erasure of labor history from US history curriculum has caused so much fucking damage to this country.
Bosses: If you don’t like how we do things, don’t work here.
Workers: *Go on strike*
Bosses: Wait no not like that
A lot of union folk very literally fought and died for the workers’ rights we have today. Like no joke, bosses would hire goons to straight-up murder unionizing and striking workers.
All the most basic workers’ rights we have today were all paid for in blood. And conservatives have never stopped trying to take them all away again.
NEVER FORGET THAT LABOR DAY IS ACTUALLY ABOUT. I know people who legitimately think it’s like a secondary mothers day - you know, for going into labor.
But it’s about workers rights and the people who campaigned for it to be a holiday knew this fucking day would come.
If you are in the US and about to celebrate a 3-day weekend, thank a goddamn union worker.
I especially love these two excerpts from her wiki page
I tell kids about Tilly ALL THE TIME when I'm doing tsunami presentations for my job. She lived in a landlocked part of England! She probably thought she would never ever ever use what she learned in her geography class about tsunamis and then just a few weeks later she used it to save over one hundred lives! It's an incredible story about how anything can happen anytime, and we need to be prepared to act.
What I think is most important about her story is that, even as a kid, Tilly knew she was right and she stuck to that knowledge. She practically threw a fit until her parents listened to her, because at first they kept brushing her off. And that is SO IMPORTANT for our kids to know! Adults can be wrong. You need to trust your instincts. YOU can be right and YOU can act in times of danger and emergency. YOU have the power to save yourself and others.

Y’all this is a great video to study to observe the body language of a very happy but also very excited cat. Lots of people see videos of excited cats doing things like climb rock climbing walls or get on small boats and think they are angry or scared, when they aren’t. Here’s a good example of happy excitement and tension in a cat where the cat’s pleasure is easy to see. The cat’s tail is lashing and its ears are going backward and forward like crazy, but the cat is not angry, it is merely off its shits because snow is just incredible. This is a wildly playful cat which might play-attack a hand or other animal because it is so excited, but not out of anger. Note the zoomies at the end to burn off some of that energy!
Think about it. When we humans do something fun and very physical, our bodies are often tense, at the ready, and a lot of our body language does look kind of aggressive or even scared. Cats are the same! Animals at play or investigating new things often show some tension, but tension is not the same as anger or fear!
