My partner and I are dating and talking about marriage Someday™️, but neither of us are ready right now. Currently my partner and I split housing costs that he pays the rent and I pay utilities because he has a higher income than me.
I just unexpectedly inherited a house. The mortgage is less than our rent so we are going to move there. However it is very much my house, but I can’t afford the mortgage on my own even though it’s way less… do you have any advice on how to split finances? I’m not sure how to proceed here.
First off: condragulations! This is all very exciting.
I'll link to our advice on splitting finances below. But the basic advice amounts to this: have him pay you rent as a tenant. And that rent should be proportional to y'all's income. So for example, if your income is $100/month and his is $300/month, then his rent should be 2/3 of the monthly mortgage (nice round numbers for ease of mathing). Then just put his rent toward the mortgage.
When and if you get married, keep the monthly payments proportional with your income, but consider adding his name to the deed of the house. That way he'll have partial ownership. In the event of a divorce, he'll be entitled to a portion of the equity in the house. Or don't! You could keep it as an asset in your name alone. Just know that for the sake of fairness, a judge might require you to pay him out of the home equity if you ever get divorced.

I'd also recommend having an official document about rent, leases, etc. That way if something happens you have your ass covered in case things go south in your relationship. Better to work out the details now while you still like each other than have to do that on top of a messy breakup.
On a general note, I'd recommend keeping the house in your name, at least until you and your partner are talking marriage. It's again a question of ass-covering.
An official document will help in the event of a non-messy breakup, too. Obviously I'm rooting for any couple in this/a similar situation, but if a breakup does happen, having an actual rental agreement in place will help with future rental approval.
Source: in another life I worked at a company that reviewed and advised on rental agreements. Someone with an actual lease (even if it's with a relative) is generally seen as a better bet than someone with a verbal agreement. It's not fair, but here we are...

I agree with keeping his name off the deed to the house but I'd say that you should *especially* keep his name off the mortgage. I bought a house together with my then-partner and were both on both the mortgage and the deed to the house. When we broke up he paid me back the amount that I had put on the down payment, and we worked with our closing attorney so that my name would be taken off the deed to the house. However, in our case it was going to require an expensive refinance of our mortgage to remove my name from the loan, so my name is still on it. This means that if my ex ever decides to stop paying the mortgage, the mortgage company *could* come after me. It seems unlikely that this will happen to me since if my ex stops paying he'll be at risk of eviction whereas I won't be (since I'm no longer living in that house), but it's something to watch out for.

How To Support a Labor Strike with 3 Simple Steps
There are lots of reasons for a labor strike. Here are just a few:
Not enough compensation. No one should have to go on strike to get a raise. But it happens all the time.
Hazardous working conditions. Lots of people take dangerous jobs. But they have the reasonable expectation that their employer will provide them with protective gear, or put measures in place to mitigate the danger. A company’s cavalier attitude to worker safety can be a great reason for a strike.
Inconsistent cost of living raises. If the workforce hasn’t had a cost of living raise in a decade, and their employer refuses to negotiate a COL raise, that can be grounds for a strike.
Inhumane treatment. Infamously, Amazon employees pee in bottles because they aren’t allowed proper breaks to relieve themselves. In my humble opinion, this means they should strike, like, yesterday.
Insufficient training. If employees are repeatedly asked to do something for which they aren’t trained, or is beyond the scope of their job description, that’s strike-worthy.
Unfair hiring and labor practices. If you’re hired at $8 an hour, and a year later a coworker is hired at $10 an hour, and you’re denied a $2 raise… you’d probably want to go on strike.

I want to make one thing really clear: Nobody wants to strike!
We all really want our employer to sit down with the bargaining team and work out a fair deal. A strike is the last ditch effort to force them. Striking is not fun, and in my union the "strike pay" is a fraction of my regular wages. And personally, I'm going to feel guilty if we have to strike because my job helps open up opportunity for people, and it's a job worth doing.
But it's also work that deserves fair compensation. And right now, my employer has an offer on the table that involves a one-time bonus lower than the rate of inflation instead of an actual cost-of-living raise, which is completely insane to me because literally everything costs more these days. So we might have to strike.
I'm not gonna like it, but you damn well better not cross my picket line if I have to do it.

Basically, the FAFSA fucked me over. They didn’t fix their algorithm to account for modern poverty and inflation, and I’m currently ineligible for Pell. This is an issue because—spoiler alert—I’m poor! I am financially eligible for Pell! I’m contacting FAFSA and my local senators about this really grave computer error.
