Girl are you the Hays Code the way you consider media irredeemable if it depicts anything that strays away from the norm you're comfortable with or depicts anything morally questionable without definitively condemning it and anyone associated with it, therefore creating worse stories and content and making it difficult for people to engage with complicated issues from a nuanced and controlled perspective?

"Don't use Libby because it costs libraries too much, pirate instead" is such a weird, anti-patron, anti-author take that somehow manages to also be anti-library, in my professional librarian-ass opinion.
It's well documented that pirating books negatively affects authors directly* in a way that pirating movies or TV shows doesn't affect actors or writers, so I will likely always be anti-book piracy unless there's absolutely, positively no other option (i.e. the book simply doesn't exist outside of online archives at all, or in a particular language).
Also, yeah, Libby and Hoopla licenses are really expensive, but libraries buy them SO THAT PATRONS CAN USE THEM. If you're gonna be pissed at anybody about this shitty state of affairs, be pissed at publishing companies and continue to use Libby or Hoopla at your library so we can continue to justify having it to our funding bodies.
One of the best ways to support your library having services you like is to USE THOSE SERVICES. Yes, even if they are expensive.
*Yes, this is a blog post, but it's a blog post filled with links to news articles. If you can click one link, you can click another.
Please, PLEASE use Libby. OverDrive. Hoopla. CloudLibrary. Kanopy. Flipster. Freegal. Transparent Language. Mango. Jstor. Your library would not offer it if they could not afford it, and we afford things by reporting the number of people who use that service, so if you don't use the service we can't afford it. It's a cycle. Keep it going, keep using it, and we'll keep providing because we'll be able to justify the cost to the bean counters in government.
please please please please reblog if youāre a writer and have at some point felt like your writing is getting worse. I need to know if Iām the only one whoās struggling with these thoughts
For those who don't know: Ikumi Nakamura is the woman who was senior artist on Bayonetta, and designed the titular character along with Hideki Kamiya. Their greatest moment of bonding was over their insistence that Bayonetta keep her glasses on at all times.
Nakamura cannot go to horny jail. She is the warden.

Teachers have tried this and are amazed when their classes donāt go feral like in the book.Ā Itās almost as if the book was supposed to be satire and not a treaty on the nature of humanity.
after losing control of the signal fire thereās a FUCKING TIMESKIP and when the next chapter starts everyoneās hair is several inches longer and their clothes have rotted to shreds and theyāre still just kind of chilling!!!!
IT TAKES THE TERRIBLE IMPERIALISM MIND-POISONED EXCESSIVELY BRITISH BOYS IN THE ACTUAL BOOK SEVERAL MONTHS TO COMMIT A SINGLE ACT OF INTENTIONAL VIOLENCE, EVEN THE ONE (1) CHILD WRITTEN AS AN ACTUAL SOCIOPATH
AND then when they DO turn on each other it is because
THEREāS AN UNSPECIFIED WORLD WAR HAPPENING
AND A PILOTāS CORPSE CRASH LANDS ON THE ISLAND POST-DOGFIGHT AND THE CHILDREN MISTAKE THE PARACHUTE FOR A MONSTER AND SPIRAL INTO PARANOIA
BECAUSE CHILDREN INHERIT THE LEGACY AND TRAUMA OF VIOLENCE FROM THE ADULTS WAGING WAR AROUND THEM
HURR DURR IN THE REAL WORLD IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN LIKE IN LORD OF THE FLIES -
IT DIDNāT HAPPEN THAT WAY IN LORD OF THE FLIES EITHER YOU JUST HAVENāT READ IT SINCE HIGH SCHOOL IF EVER AND DONāT REMEMBER WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THE GODDAMN BOOK
yes. yes he did. iām also gonna direct you to the real life ālord of the fliesā which occured in the 1960s, when six tongan schoolboys got stranded on a desert island for over a year before being rescued by an australian fisherman (who, it should be noted, later took on all six as crewmembers because the reason they were out in the first place was because they wanted to see the world, and named his ship the Ata after the island they were stranded on). nobody died. the only injuries that occurred were accidental, and when one of the boys broke his leg falling down a cliff, the others braced it and looked after him so well that it healed perfectly. if they argued, then they would literally go to opposite sides of the island until theyād cooled off. after leaving the island, they remained friends for the rest of their lives. hereās a photo of them as adults, with their rescuer (who is third from the left) and other members of his crew.
i read about this in rutger bregmanās human kind, a book i cannot recommend highly enough, but if you donāt want to go and read a whole book about the inherent goodness of humanity (which again, you really should) then the relevant excerpt can be found here.
Wrong: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because she was Lord Byron's daughter.
Right: Ada Lovelace invented computer science and immediately tried to use it to cheat at gambling because that was the closest you could get in 1850 to being a Super Mario 64 speedrunner.
Well, yeah. That's why she received the unusual education which laid the foundation for her later discoveries in the first place. Her mother, Lady Byron, firmly believed three things:
It was her responsibility as a mother to ensure that Ada didn't turn out like her father;
Fundamentally, the thing that was wrong with Lord Byron is that he was a poet; and
The opposite of poetry is math.
Ada Lovelace's biography handily illustrates how well this theory worked out in practice.
do not forget the patron saint of these weeks that we celebrate ourselves proudly and openly in the streets
her name was Marsha P Johnson, and we have her to thank for so much.
remember, the first Pride was a riot, and she was one of the brave souls who endured it to help carve the path which so many of us walk today. she helped found several activist groups regarding LGBT safety and wellbeing. and she was absolutely radiant, too.
me: to write a story so soul snatching, so gut wrenching and so devastatingly beautiful that it leaves you crying at 3am when you have a 8am lecture/shift and it inspires people to write entire essays, to write entire fanfics, mood boards and playlists based on it.

not to be controversial bc I know this is likeā¦not in line with shifting opinions on fanfic comment culture but if thereās a glaring typo in my work I will NOT be offended by pointing it out. if ao3 fucks up the formattingā¦I will also not be offended by having this pointed outā¦
ālooking forward to the next updateā and āI hope you update soon!ā are different vibes than a demand, and should be read in good faith because a reader is finding their way to tell you how much they love it. I will not be mad at this.
āI donāt usually like this ship but this fic made me feel somethingā is also incredibly high praise. Iām not going to get mad at this.
even āI love this fic but Iām curious about why you made [x] choiceā is just another way a reader is engaging in and putting thought into your work.
I just feel like a lot of authors take any comment thatās not perfectly articulated glowing praise in the exact manner theyāre hoping to receive it in bad faith.
fic engagement has been dropping across the board over the last several years, and yes itās frustrating but it isnāt as though I canāt see how it happens. comment anxiety can be a real thing. the last thing anyone wants to do is offend an author they love, and that means sometimes people default to silence.
idk where Iām going with this I guess aside from saying unless a comment is outright attacking me Iām never going to get mad at it, and I think a lot of authors should feel the same way. ESPECIALLY TYPOS PLZ GOD POINT OUT MY TYPOS.
Reading American Psycho finally and although I anticipated the stomach wrenching details of murder what I wasnāt expecting was Bono giving Patrick Bateman a big boner as he sang to him at a U2 concert.
i think the best thing about american psycho is actually how pathetic patrick bateman is actively characterized as and portrayed. heās insecure, none of the other characters take him seriously, he has to kill people to compensate, he gets visibly triggered over every tiny inconvenience, heās perceived as a sniveling spineless prick. the psycho in american psycho, who weāre not sure actually exists, is the intimidating sigma male patrick wants to be but is just not. and itās been thirty years since incels have been misunderstanding and misappropriating this aspect of his character, which adds another layer of humor and harrowing concern to the debacle.
going to start researching sheep breeds that are like endangered or need conservation and then seek out their wool to use, preferably buying directly from the herders, so i can support them
i found a farm that has Navajo-Churro sheep and sells their wool as roving and yarn directly to the public, along with several other uncommon breeds :) website here
re: your tags, totally fine to reblog!! there's a whole database of farms im looking at now on the Livestock Conservancy website!! here's the link, all you have to do is select "yarn" or "fiber" from this drop down menu
and it'll give you contact info and websites to A BUNCH of small farms selling their heritage breed fiber directly!! you can also look up by animal breed if you want a specific kind of fiber like, say Navajo-Churro
it's AWESOME!! many of these farms seem to be certified by the Conservancy and the Conservancy itself seems to be like a good nonprofit
One thing to consider about uncommon sheep breeds is that a lot of them have coarser wool then the kind used for most commercially available yarns. Coarse wools feel itchy so they aren't recommended for next-to-skin projects such as scarves, hats, mittens, etc. They are, however, good for durable outerwear.
(I bought a big sampler of rare breed wools and I plan on making it into a blanket because I can't have it around my autistic neck)
A great resource is The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook by Deborah Robson. It covers a lot of rare breeds and gives information about micron count (common measure of "softness").
Navajo churro is known to have a remarkably variable micron count compared to most other sheep, ranging from incredibly soft to very course. Make sure anywhere you buy from has a return policy in case the wool texture ends up being unsuitable for the project you have planned.
Below the cut is a list on the recommended uses of various breed's wool taken from page 68 of my ebook version of the sourcebook:
"A Starter Guide to Breed-Specific Wools:

blankets ā usually soft enough for most people to have in
contact with skin, and the softer wools within most of these
breeds are also suitable for many types of baby garments

hi! thank you so much for the additional information!! the first website i linked has recommendations for how to use their fibers, like if it's suitable to be worn directly on skin or if it's better off for outerwear or weaving projects! (they recommend outwear or weaving projects for their Navajo-Churro wool!)
but thank you very much, that's all very important to keep in mind and i really value your input!!

Seriously, guys, the cheer leading does help. Sometimes the only thing that gets the next chapter out is āIām gonna do this for starfleetlinkuei69! ;_;ā
For the record, this also applies to people who don't post WIPs. When I am deciding which of my various stories to work on, it's part vibes and part "What will make my Consistent Commenters happy?"
one time i left a silly comment on a two shot and it made the author laugh so hard they literally wrote a third chapter specifically for me because my comment made them laugh. comments are SO fucking important. even if you just comment a heart emoji it can literally be the difference between someone finishing a story or not. EXALT THE FIC WRITER!!!!
