Dear Men Writers
Lesser known facts when writing women:
High heeled shoes don’t become flats if you break the heels off.
The posts of earrings aren’t sharp.
Nail polish takes a long time to dry and smudges when wet.
You can’t hold in a period like pee.
Inserting a tampon is not arousing or sexual in any way, ever.
Feel free to add your own.
- Bras leave red marks on the skin under and around boobs and it is a magical experience when taken off.
- Make up can take anywhere from 5 to 25 minutes depending on how skilled you are.
- Taking hair out of a ponytail after wearing it for hours does not make it perfectly straight when it comes down.
- Hair when wet sticks to the skin it no longer flows, idiot.
-When women with long hair kiss, turn around, do anything, their hair falls in the way.
- Stockings are itchy and tear like wet paper bags.
- Pantyhose, tights, leggings, and stockings are each different. - Waxing hurts and leaves red skin for a while afterwards while shaving leaves stubble - Most can’t run in heels unless they have been VERY worn - Insecurity in appearance doesn’t mean “buy me a drink” - EVERYONE HAS DIFFERENT TASTES IN EVERYTHING
-Having large breasts sucks. It sucks beyond belief. If a garment happens to fit your large chest, odds are it won’t fit the rest of you. Underboob sweat is real and terrible. Bending over for extended periods of time will tweak your back out. Running can be painful due to boob turbulence. Bras are hella expensive. Big breasts are not fun.
Putting a tampon in isnt a quick bend-poke-done kinda deal. It involves cubicle yoga, messy hands, numerous curse words as you realise it isnt in correctly and have to take it out and start again with a new one.
Yes to all of this. But also:
If her hair is in an updo, one does not simply remove a hairpin to send her hair cascading down her back. No. If her hair is an updo, it will take at least an hour and an extra set of hands to remove the 137 bobby pins that are holding her hair in place. Furthermore, there’s probably a can’s worth of hairspray in there, intended to withstand category 2 hurricane winds. There’s no cascading happening here - the best you can hope for is a misshapen nest of hair to clump and poof unattractively in the back while it still remains flat against her scalp.
This is one of the funniest posts I’ve seen in a while (especially if you read all the comments), but also really depressing because at 42 I still judge myself as having failed for not matching up to all these mythical stereotypes despite knowing they’re impossible
^^^This though
The odds of a woman having smoothly shaved legs and armpits are directly proportional to the amount of skin her clothing bares and/or the amount of fucks she gives at that particular moment.
GLASSES ARE NOT COSMETIC. If we whip them off, we do not become gorgeous fashion models. We become squinty.
-most women wear bras. Yes, even when they are trying to dress sexy. Because bras make boobs look perkier and rounder, which is something men apparently find sexy, so being a seductress or femme fatale is not an automatic reason for a female character to not be wearing a bra.
-a good bra will hide headlights, or at the very least drastically reduce their noticeability. A women with enough pointy nipple issues will opt for a padded or molded bra to hide them.
-women’s nipples do not automatically become hard pyramids visible through any and all layers of clothing the second they become even slightly aroused. They are not the female equivalent of boners. And even if their nipples do get hard, the bras they are almost certainly wearing (because even a goddamn succubus with big, honkin’ knockers for seducing men is gonna have those painful puppies in some kind of boob sling) should keep those pointy nipples from being visible to every other character in the scene, JIM BUTCHER. YES, EVEN LARA RAITH WOULD WEAR A BRA ONCE IN A GODDAMN WHILE.
if you’re being tied up and tortured in a freezing underground dungeon, then you probably have more important things to pay attention to than how hard somebody’s nipples are, jim butcher
- Wearing a bra that doesn’t fit HURTS. It’s not sexy to wear a bra that’s “two sizes too small”, it’d make your clothes hang oddly and you’d have a weird, uncomfortable “quad-boob” effect and your back would hurt, BEN AARONOVITCH.
Also, after removing a too small bra, there’s gonne be angry red lines on the boobs and ribs and the lady is not going to want them to be touched by anyone for a good long while
-Not all women wear heels. Those things hurt and are hard to balance in. They can also mess up your feet and back pretty bad.
-Lips aren’t just naturally red “as if she’d been drinking wine but they were just like that without makeup cause she’s so perfect,” my dear little Kvothe from ‘Name of the Wind’. Also, girls do not naturally smell like fruit or flowers, it’s either perfume or something she’d been eating recently.
I’ve been appreciating this post but now it’s back very specifically calling out my problematic faves and I don’t think those male authors realize how much it totally takes me out of the story for a moment when they commit these errors. It does nothing useful for the plot and is annoying for half of the audience
Is it weird that I’m female and wasn’t aware of a solid third of these?
I mean, all writes take note. I basically live in man land when it comes to protagonists so I don’t know half these things despite being a woman
(Most) Women do not look at themselves in the mirror and compare their breasts to fruit. Any sort of fruit. Especially melons. Please save us from the melons.
Also we are not aware of our breasts at all times. I do not walk down a flight of stairs and think “oh golly my breasts are bouncing so much right now”. They are as much as natural part of our bodies as arms. Do you constantly think about how your arms are moving? Sure you may be aware of them, but paying full attention? Doubtful.
Parents Picking Their Child’s Name: Eh, I like the way it sounds. Sure.
Writers Picking Their Character’s Names: What genre is it? How old are they? Active or passive? Blood type? Country of origin? Is it a family name? What does the name mean? Is it pretentious? Is it not pretentious enough? Can it be used as a metaphor? What position was the planet to the stars at the exact moment of their birth? Is the name gay enough?
Alternatively-

This post pops up on my dash every few months and I will never not reblog it.
This is too good to not reblog
Everybody see this, this is the quality trash I came to Tumblr in the first place.
This post is ALMOST perfect, but we’re forgetting someone:
Jeez, this is beautiful.
people who don't wear glasses who are writing characters who wear glasses;
they get fogged up when we drink hot beverages. they get smudged for no reason. we will push them up using anything in our area (i.e shoulder, whatever is in my hand, scrunching my nose up so they get pushed up, etc.). they get knocked off our faces all. the. fucking. time. when we change clothes we either take them off or they fall off when we pull our shirts off. we have to clean them after being in the rain. we own multiple pairs of them, not just one lone pair for our whole lives. most people don’t wear them in the pool, but some have extra old pairs for the pool (like me). some people take them off during sex, that’s fine! but some people keep them on. they don’t get squished into your face when you kiss (most of the time. at least from what i’ve experienced and i’ve got some mf big glasses). if we look down and look back up while you talk/to peek up at something, we will just peek blindly over the top of them. we clean them on whatever item of clothing is closest. some of us have prescription sunglasses and some of us wear contacts when we need to wear sunglasses. please keep some of these in mind when you write characters with glasses cause y'all who have 20/20 vision keep telling me all characters sleep in their glasses and own the same singular pair from age 6-25 and they never clean them.
( there’s this but you missed a few iconic glasses traits - “where’d I put my glasses” (is wearing them) - new glasses getting scratched on basically nothing. where’d the nick come from? we just don’t know. - forgetting you’re wearing synthetic material and just smudge the junk on your glasses around - after doing so, proceeding to hunt down any friend who is wearing a more cottony material - getting eyelashes on your glasses - stabbing yourself in the face with the arm of your glasses - “woah are you blind?” - “how many fingers am I holding up??” - walking into a warm room from the cold and suddenly being unable to see because your glasses fogged up - going outside and everything is Super Crisp 1080p - having three pairs of glasses and putting all of them at once - “aw dude you have transition lenses? lucky.” - the non-glasses scrutinising squint - taking off your glasses and suddenly you’re a different entity entirely - if you’re too good for taking off your glasses when dressing/undressing, realising you didn’t pull the collar of a shirt out enough and subjecting to your fate )
-For female characters wearing eye makeup is pretty much useless
- the reason why is because no matter what we do, the mascara will smear on our glasses
- thinking “Oh, there’s a little smudge. I’ll just clean it quickly”, then taking the glasses off and wondering how the hell you could see with what looks like three layers of dirt on them
- giving your loved one a little kiss but in the wrong angle so their nose touches your glasses
- the look™ when you’re in your bed lying on the side with your glasses on (aka the glasses are skewed)
-sleeping in glasses fucking hurts… well, not anymore, but it used too
-if you have long eyelashes, having to push your glasses down your nose so they dont constantly rub each other, then having to push them up cuz you cant see
-WHY WONT YOU STAY ON MY FACE?!?!?!
-*they tilt crooked slightly* oh wow, And… now Im falling over
-having transitions and right after walking into a building you can’t see because they’re still dark
-forgetting where you put them then having to either ask for help or judge your entire surroundings
-dont like contacts? like cosplaying? guess what! you’re blind now!
-trading glasses with other glasses wearers to see how blind your friends are
-when there’s a smudge that just. Won’t. Go. Away.
-“hey do you have lens cleaner?”
-your old glasses become your back up pair in case your current ones break
-metal and plastic frames are very different and most people have a preference
All of this omg
Oh also I forgot to mention the nOSE PAD THINGIES
I HATE THOSE WITH A BURNING PASSION
OH MY GOD SAME, I HAD A PAIR OF METAL FRAMES AND THE NOSE PAD THINGIES THAT CUSHIONED THE ACTUAL THINGS FELL OFF
THAT AMIGOS IS WHY I WEAR PLASTIC FRAMES

“Ew you’re a guy and like the color pink are you gay?”
I’ve been waiting for this post all my life
“In Welsh folk-lore the dragon-fly is the devil’s messenger; the caterpillar is the devil’s cat; the iris is the devil’s posy; the wild clematis is the devil’s milk; the palmatum is the devil’s hand; the scabiosa succisa is the devil’s bite; and the wild orchid is the devil’s basket.”

Incase anyone was wondering
“Babies only cry if they are hungry, need changing, or need to be picked up”
Lies
Babies (and small children) also cry for reasons such as:
1. “I am tired and that makes me angry”
2. “I scared myself with a fart”
3. “You are the wrong parent”
4. “I ran into something with my face”
5. “I’m facing the opposite direction then the one I want to”
6. “I fell asleep in one place and woke up somewhere completely different”
7. “I am a very small person in a very big world”
8. “I got scared because YOU farted”
Babies have more then 3 states of being and sometimes you just have to hold them and bounce them gently while saying solemnly “yes it is very hard to be a baby” because frankly it is
you have to remember that when you’re that tiny… pretty much any bad thing that happens to you is LITERALLY the WORST thing that has ever happened in your life. they have no perspective. everything is awful. help them
#everything is happening for the first time and they cant even google it

What I Really Feel About Sharing Chapters Online and Publishing / Writeblr
Disclaimer: Opinion.
I scrolled down through my feed and saw a post about Writeblrs shouldn’t post their chapters online since they won’t be able to get published if they do so.
Not only that it is also written there that people might steal your story and ideas once you actually share them.
Okay. It is in fact true that some people may actually steal your stories and ideas. This happened before when I was in my old account in Wattpad.
But you have to remember. Your story? Yeah? That manuscript you have in your computer? That’s your version of the story.
The person that stole your ideas? That’s his version of the story.
He may have stolen your idea but you have to remember. Both of you write differently
Your story has been done before. Countless times actually.
You’re just writing it in how you view it would happen. How everything will fall into place. You’re the storyteller.
Let’s say someone stole your characters. Like your protagonist. Let’s say… Uh.. John
When you shared your idea of John to the “friend” you said he’s a kind and a gentle person with a tragic past like his parents died.
This “friend” decided to steal this character and write it down on his book.
But you have to remember.
Both of you write differently
Execution of the idea is different.
He may have written down that John is a nice guy but in YOUR VERSION of the story. He’s more than that.
You have written something more compelling and complex.
John is a nice guy right? But what no one knows is that you made him a fake nice guy.
He’s actually a psychopath pretending to be a nice guy in your story.
Now. Should you be worried if someone steals your ideas? No. There are thousands of ideas like yours. It’s all in execution.
There are a hundred of wips on Tumblr.
Yours is just in the same ocean.
Don’t post your chapters online. You won’t get published.
Okay. False.
There’s a thing called self publishing. I have seen a lot of Writeblrs actually publish their books online through Patreon and Amazon. So there’s that.
But what about traditional publishing?
Listen.
There are hundreds of books in Wattpad that are published by actual publishing houses. You can’t deny that. (Worldwide)
Don’t forget social media is a needed platform in order to promote your book like Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr.
It is building your audience.
Hyping people to read your book.
If anyone has heard of light novels (Japan) or xianxia (China) these are novels that was shared on a website for a thousands of readers to read.
Half of those books that are shared online is actually published.
But what does the publishers feel about it?
By the end of the day, selling a book is a business.
Publishing a book requires money for printing, advertising and marketing.
If your story is out in the internet and a lot of people knows your story and people are actually hyping about it.
Publishers will actually crave to publish your book because they know for a certain that they will get money from it.
But if your story is out in public and no one is really paying attention to it then you really won’t get a chance to get published and if you send your story to a publisher and they find out your story is out in public and no one is paying attention to it?
They won’t publish it either.
If the masses don’t pay attention to it. Why should they?
Has anyone thought of sending their books to an actual publishing house? No? Then do it.
Sometimes you have to reach out to the publishers. It’s not always going to have to be them who’s reaching out to you.
You have to prove your potential at times.
This is your shot.
Harry Potter was actually rejected 10 times before it was published and it became a best seller and a widely known book.
Life of Pi was rejected by numerous of London publishing houses before it was was made into an award winning film.
So do you want to get published?
Make an effort. Get your dreams out there.
Final Thoughts:
I know some people might disagree with me on this and probably call me out in the comments but you have to understand that if you’re going to make writing as your career. You’ll need to make an effort for it to come true.
Nothing is easy. Nothing can be made extra ordinary over night.
You have to do your part and then wait for the world to see it.
I am a fellow writeblr who actually thought about whether I want to get published or not and my verdict for myself is I don’t want to get published yet.
I want to build myself a connection and a platform and prove myself to the community before I deliver an actual work to publishers.
My writing journey has just begun and I will walk down that path with my own efforts.
Sincerely,
Tawny Writes
This is incredibly important. As you, @tawnywrites, stated correctly: nothing is easy, nothing can be made extraordinary over night.
Here are my two personal cents: I have been doing enough research on publishing and all that crap that I for myself have decided to not think about it for now. I think abou sharing my stuff here on this platform in order to see whether people are actually interested.
It’s a win-win-situation: if people are interested, they’ll follow me and maybe even create a little fandom that will later on read my work if I ever wanted to post it. If people don’t like it, I will know because people won’t follow me and therefore no fandom for me.
In both cases, I know right before sending anything off to a publisher how my story would be received. Because I am not an already published author or anything, I have to start somewhere.
What I’m trying to say: posting your work online can be a huge indicator whether or not your story would be well-received. And as @tawnywrites stated, if people love it, publishers will be more open about publishing my work. If not, well, then I’ll need to work on something better.
In short: putting your work out there is a cheap method to get feedback. I’m not talking about professional critique, or anything productive, but about opinions of those who would be reading your published work as well. Because not every reader is a professional critic. Most of them rely on their gut feeling.
Use that gut feeling for yourself. Work on yourself. And also: find out whether you are ready to get published. But that’s a whole different story.

Anya is live and ready to show you everything. Watch her strip, dance, and perform exclusive shows just for you. Interact in real-time and make your fantasies come true.
