Last week I saw Sheep Detectives in theaters and I loved it. Loved every sheep character but my favorites were Sebastian and the unnamed winter lamb (who gets named George at the end)

Nick’s like,

“Wow. Sure is nice having someone around that I actually enjoy. This hasn’t happened in a while. And she enjoys being around me? That’s crazy. I…I really like being around her actually. Wait hang on this is weird. Oh wow I REALLY like being around her. I—oh. Oh no. Okay this is. This is bad. Good things don’t happen to me. I can’t have a good thing happening to me. Okay maybe if I never say anything, it’ll just stay exactly like this and I get to keep her around exactly like this anyway. That’s. Yeah that’s good enough for me. That’s more than I’ve ever needed. I can cope if we just never bring it up. This is fine.”

And Judy’s like,

“Boy, I can’t believe I made a friend! And I really enjoy being around him! And I know he’s standoffish and annoying, but he clearly likes being around me too. And we work well together! And I adore him! I’m gonna get him gifts. I’m gonna tell him how proud of him I am. I’m gonna make it so clear how much I love him because he deserves to be loved. I would actually be fine if this was my only friend ever. I would actually be fine if we saw each other all day every day. I would actually be fine if we died together. I would actually be fine if—wait, hang on. This is. This is just. He’s my best friend, right? I’m his best friend too, right? Oh. Oh wait he. He cares about me a LOT. Okay hang on I might…I might have jumped the gun, I gotta check the definition of ‘best friend’ again, hold up.”

They are NOT romantic characters. They do not have romantic histories, certainly nothing that defines them. They never asked for this. They never wanted this. It was an ACCIDENT. But it was BOTH their accidents.

Nick’s goal is self-preservation. Unfortunately, he’s in love with a ticking time bomb.

Judy’s goal is being good. Unfortunately, she’s in love with a pessimistic criminal.

They actually have planned out their lives FOR solitude. Both of them. Look at their apartments. The size. The layout. Look at their schedules, their skillsets, their interests, styles, cuisines. They’re not PREPARED to want to be by someone else’s side. They’re only ready to fend for themselves and do what they want for their lives.

But actually, they don’t get a choice in the matter.
