like cool you read Beowulf I read all of Homestuck in three days and plan to read the entire scp wiki supplementary posts included. suck my dick. Beowulf isn't supet relevant to this day and age but community made horror and weird pop culture shit is and the fact that a book and the person reading said book are looked down on by educational institutions because it's "not intellectual literature" is bad and should be rectified immediately. the fact that reading some stupid shit from a bajillion years ago somehow counts as points to a person's worth in the educational fields contributes to class warfare and unequally impacts people of color who already overwhelmingly live in areas that are poor and therefore have less-than-great schools and are already racistly associated with stupidity and that is the tea.

like sure! reading old and hard to understand lit can be an achievement but it shouldn't be this bar that people in lit fields have to reach to be seen as educated or capable,,,

specifically like ok it makes sense if it's specialised knowledge for a very specialised area of study, but if im taking ap english lit, maybe why not make it pertain to the literature of the times! like. if i personally wanna read it, then power to me, but literature education needs to move forward from their high horse old era bs! like. it's not really that relevant anymore. i can understand learning about some of it, how there's influence in lit of today but you know what else is a book that has a shit ton of pop culture influence? walking dead comics. like. the books of the people are the important literature not some some shit a dusty ass white guy wrote 400 years ago, like if you're going to study lit that is old you have to correlate it to TODAY instead of having it be this lofty shit of "oh it's an artwork that only truly educated people read"!
