This what I mean when I say science writing is terrible and you need to actually go back to the academic publications themselves to get what’s going on
Frequent enough issue that there's a greeting card about it...
when you go to bed significantly earlier than usual, a little menu should pop up asking if you want Wake Up Early or More Sleep. and then you should get what you requested. that's my human body UI improvement for the day.

I want to know the original context, but I *will* forget it again on purpose.
When I am king, we will valorize sanitation workers the way we currently valorize the military
So heroic posters showing trashmen battling allegorical monsters? I'm down.
Yeah but that's just the beginning. I also want Sanitation Worker Discounts at every business and blockbuster movie propaganda glorifying sanitation work. I want random people to salute garbage collectors and thank them for their service. I want drivers who get impatient with the recycling truck and honk at it and swerve around it to become social pariahs

'Statue of Athena''. Pentelic marble. Found in Athens, near the Varvakios school. It is the truest and best preserved copy of the cult statue of Athena Parthenos by Phidias, which was erected in the Parthenon in 438 BC. In the original, which was about twelve times larger than the Varvakios copy, the naked parts of the body were made of ivory, while the rest of the statue was covered with gold leaf.

How easy is it to spin yarn purely by feel?
Could I obtain roving and learn a new craft before Christmas?
No really. I'm dangerously close to having a package sent to my parents' house for me (to make sure it doesn't arrive at my house after I leave for the week).
I built huge carts of roving on multiple sites, but THEN I found a lovely starter kit on Etsy that includes a spindle AND a tiny bit of four different types of wool. It's only $26.
How easy is it to spin yarn purely by feel?
@batbetbitbotbut I'm familiar with the difference between
Supported spindles
Top whorl spindles drop with a hook
Bottom whorl drop spindles with a point
But I've never heard of long vs short suspension drop spindles. Can you elaborate or point me to good resources?
Yes! With a disclaimer that I have never done it (or seriously looked into doing it) personally, there are two things I would share:
1) Diagram for long vs short suspension, from this journal article by people seeking to recreate short suspension spinning.
Long suspension is the method I see most among contemporary spinners, but I am not aware of any statistics about it nor any information about its origins. It's what I was taught and thus the method I use myself (aside from dabbling in supported spindles). The spindle may be top or bottom whorl and a small distaff may be used to keep fibre out of the way but not usually as a core component of the spinning process. You are very far removed from the spindle - you set it going and that's it until you stop it, you don't have any feedback on its movement except by how much twist travels into the fibre between your hands.
Short suspension is far more common (or the only method?) in medieval European art, rarer today. A distaff is integral to the spinning process because only one hand drafts the fibre. I think it could be helpful for spinning by touch because the other hand can provide many small pushes to the spindle, getting constant feedback on its movement. If the yarn breaks between the hands, you won't necessarily drop the spindle altogether.
2) The Distaff Spinner's Diary, which Facebook keeps recommending at me. Many videos of short suspension spinning with a variety of distaffs and spindles, some discussion of the subject, I don't actually follow her and haven't checked if she has beginner tutorials or similar. In general, looking for resources which include distaffs might be more likely to get short suspension spinning resources - "short suspension spinning" is not really how people talk about it outside theory, I think.
OKAY SO. FINALLY. I HAVE PROPERLY (ish) MET THE WEIRD SPINNING WHEEL

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.
Hit "view post" and lost it
This is a reminder for those who handmake Christmas presents that now is not too early to start. It may in fact be a good time to start if you have a lot to make/your craft takes a long time. You should maybe start it now, whether that's brainstorming or actually doing the crafts!
