being a writer is fun
I've got point-of-view vertigo here.
Washington Post is paywalling the article but it looks like Taylor Farms — a consumer bagged salad brand that also supplies produce to grocers and fast food chains like Taco Bell, Walmart, McDonald's, Chipotle, Burger King, KFC, and Meijer —may be at least one of the sources of the current cyclosporiasis outbreak.
Taylor makes bagged greens, salad kits, chopped salads, the works. Keep avoiding supermarket greens, but keep an especially close eye out for this brand/supplier. The above list of grocers and fast food chains is NOT exhaustive, so please continue getting lettuce and other raw produce taken off your burgers, sandwiches, etc.

I work for the Marriott next to a convention center and every time theres a furry convention we get complaints about the continental breakfast having hair in it and im like what do you want me to do? Shave them? Shave the fucking furries?
Loki's SICK and TIRED of being a ginger so after school on friday he goes to CVS and gets himself a couple boxes of hair dye in jet black and comes home triumphant mom's gone for the weekend so she can't stop him this time and then he has to sheepishly ask Thor to come help him with the back of his head because he can't tell if he's missing spots and then it's a lot of 'wow dude mom's gonna kill you when she sees this mess' and 'be CAREFUL dumbass you're making the mess worse' and 'dude your eyebrows look so stupid hahahaha' and 'well I can't have orange eyebrows' and a little 'dude, does this stain skin?'
And yes Thor, it does stain skin.
The worst thing about it all isn't that he has to pay mom back for the towels, or having to spend hours trying to remove/cover the stains in the bathroom(at least Thor got dragged into that too, since he helped and as The Older Brother, he should've talked sense into Loki). It's not that it took waaaaayyyy too long for the stains to fade from his face. It's not even Thor calling him Ebony Dark'ness. The worst thing is...
Mom was right all along. He fucking hates the color. 😞
It's so dark and jarring and somehow it's sucked what little color was there right out of his pasty skin. He thought he'd look like some hot androgynous goth fairy being ripped right out of a pinterest board and instead he looks like he got dragged out of a oil spill like some scrungy little duckling. And it's SO splotchy.
awesome beach near me
Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.
“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. “Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.”
it has since been confirmed that namaygoosisagagun first nation has completely burnt to the ground. if you would like to help the community navigate an ongoing crisis, i urge you to donate to the anishinabek nation 7th generation, a registered charity seeking to improve the lives of first nations people. donations are going directly to members of namaygoosisagagun first nation.

Now, unlike Michael Newton’s book of hope, I appreciate the clarity of this book’s title: Encyclopedia of Things that Never Where (1985). Stating that definitively really gets all that belief malarkey out of the way and lets us appreciate these things on their own imaginary terms (as Georgess McHargue encouraged us to do on Monday).
This book is more like a collection of several small topical encyclopedias, each discrete from the others and in their own alphabetical order. Nor do they necessarily make a perfect or intuitive sense all the way through. Things of the Cosmos is mostly gods of major mythologies, but also King Arthur and his knights. Things of the Ground and Underground collects faeries and tree spirits, but also the manticore, Minotaur and Sphinx. Things of Wonderland seems to imply things from literature, but really it collects all manner of fantastical places, from fiction, but also from legend. Things of Magic, Science and Invention could just as well have been called Things and left it at that; it collects notable items, from Thor’s hammer to Jekyll’s potion to the many unusual uses for nails. Things of Water, Sky and Air covers all the creatures not detailed in Earth chapter — Grendel is here, griffins, too, and all the sea serpents. Finally, Things of the Night details the undead and other creatures who hide from the sun, whether they go bump or not.
Robert Ingpen’s art throughout is a pure joy. There are so many illustrations, the book is awash in them, and they’re all amazing, often subverting expectation but also remaining recognizable. There’s a warmth to it, like sitting by a fire, and he has a real talent for collaging together different elements that feels less museum-like and more evokes the crowded study of an eccentric scholar. I can’t imagine the amount of time it took to put together this portfolio, but it was well worth it. It’s a treasure.
Robert Ingpen's illustration of that Aztec god felt very familar to me, so I looked it up - it seems likely he swiped the mask from this 1976 Dean Ellis cover for To Live Forever by Jack Vance. But perhaps they were both using the same reference material?
I really like this website because somebody will be like “there’s nothing wrong with darting out from behind a parked car into traffic, bootlicker” and you can be like okay this clearly evolved from a valid point about how the US is too car-centric. But something happened to it.
The lady loki summer skin is so cute!!
Is it socially acceptable to use opaque watercolors, or is that considered gouache?
heard someone say "who even owns a rolling pin anymore" and my brain froze trying to process it. what does that mean. are u implying rolling pins are outdated technology? did we come up with a shiny new 21st century method of flattening dough of which i remain uninformed? is there now an app on the app store people are using instead??? im losing my mind "who even owns a rolling pin" people who BAKE
