Just so you guys know. Supreme Court justices Thomas and Alito wrote an opinion today in support of repealing Obergefell ā the decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide. Justices Kavanaugh and Gorsuch would almost certainly join them. Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who supports hate groups like the ADF that supports criminalizing homosexuality, would absolutely make 5 ā a majority.
We canāt stop her nomination before Inauguration Day. But if we elect Joe Biden, we can reform the court and protect what few LGBTQ protections we have. If we donāt, we will lose every protection we have and be in serious, physical danger.
Please vote. Everyone has a stake in this. Vote early, vote in person, and bring your friends. This is it.
I can't vote.
someone who can, please fix this.

Dividing up eras of tumblr
It just occurred to me that I kind of arbitrarily started referring to āfirst ageā āsecond ageā and āthird ageā tumblr one day because I realized during a discord conversation that it really can be divided up very effectively between a couple major events that changed the fabric of the siteās culture almost overnight, but nobody but me ever refers to them that way, so by way of explanation:
First Age: everything before Dashcon. Art communities were still largely thriving on the internet and social media still mostly existed out from under corporate monopolies, and people were just wildly guessing about how to use it. We were in the last hurrah of the internet wild west and lolcats were still a thing. Tumblr was just a fun and quirky place, we were blissfully writing unironic posts about tumblr university and fandom vs hipster and theĀ āI like your shoelacesā thing, Hank Green wrote a goddamn song about tumblr, we were all like Adam and Eve dwelling in Eden unaware of their sin. Potterheads grab your wands.
Second Age: post-Dashcon, but pre-Purge. We have all eaten the fruit of knowledge and there is no going back. There are no more secret code or tumblr university posts because everyone knows firsthand how badly that would go. Fandom culture is forever changed. We are now aware that we live in a hellish cringetopia but have absolutely no plans to leave, because by now a combination of monopolies and a sneaky rise in purity culture has the internet by the throat (but not in a kinky way, that would scare off advertisers) so there arenāt a lot of better options, and at least our relatives canāt find us here. A lot of artists now have their primary presence on tumblr. The lax policies regarding nsfw and controversial content mean itās a good space for queer creators and sex workers despite the many shortcomings weāre now aware of. The porn bot plague really kicks into full gear to the point that every time our follower counts go up weāre ready with the block/spam button like the uncles from Secondhand Lions picking off traveling salesmen. The drama starts to get really fucking weird, with classics such as the human pet guy and the bone-stealing witch.
Third Age: post-Purge. After changing corporate hands a few times, the drive to make the internet safe for our Good Christian Advertisers and hypothetical children has finally reached us, and brings with it TERFs, purity culture, and the Porn Ban, which was allegedly a solution to the porn bots except that it clearly wasnāt at all. The large community of sex workers and artists that was keeping tumblr afloat as anything resembling a viable social media site have made a mass exodus and a lot of the rest of the userbase followed them, mostly to twitter or a few doomed attempts at tumblr copycats. Tumblr is now a mad max clown car full of people too stubborn to pack up and leave for a functional website. Itās a post-apocalyptic wasteland whose only remaining merit is that even without the ability to post porn weāve managed to make ourselves such a complete anathema to advertisers that weāre mostly just left alone. Weāre all just tired. Some people still run art blogs but nobody outside of tumblr ever sees them.Ā Literally all we have going for us is that weāre not twitter and we have +5 resistance to capitalism. And Xkit.
Weāre also still generating content to be screenshotted and reposted on more functional social media sites, frequently without credit. This place is the filthy, cramped factory floor, where nobody wants to come and actually see how the sausage is made before we ship it out to them.
I also wonder how the aging of the user base contributes to this as well. In 2011, people in their 20s were viewed as geezers on the site. As the mostly juvenile users grew up and left for college and eventually the post-school workforce, Iād imagine their changing experiences and tastes would be reflected in the changing sitewide social mores? Combine with the political landscape shift from the beginning of Obamaās term to where we sit now mid-trump (hopefully tail end rather than mid) and you get a dramatically different user base that is still compromised of mostly the same individual people?
Friendly October reminder not to put Spock or other Jewish characters in costumes with horns
to clarify: it is an antisemitic idea that Jews have horns (dating to a mistranslation of karan (shone) v keren (horns) ) which was perpetuated in art by the likes of Michelangelo. this is not a thing of the pastāsome gentiles still believe that jewish people have horns, and putting jewish characters in costumes/aus with horns is insensitive at best and also really fuckin gross
also do not depict Jewish characters as demons there is a very long history of Jews being seen as demons and that being used to kill usĀ
please do not dress Jewish characters in costumes that are priest outfit or nun outfit or with crossesĀ
Just to give y'all an idea of how modern the horn issue is: My dad, when he went to college in the early 1980ās, was asked by someone who had never met a Jew before where his horns were. In the 1980ās. My dad was asked where his horns were. This was only 30 years ago. I have been lucky not to deal with that particular stereotype in my lifetime, but that was less than a decade before I was born. And I know other Jews in areas where Jews are scarce have dealt with this much more recently than the 80ās.
Yup. When my mom went to college, her freshman year roommate woke up the first Sunday and started getting dressed for church. My mom was still in bed, so the roommate came over and woke her up.
Roommate: Did you want to come to church with me, or do you have your own church youāre going to?
Mom: Well, I donāt really go to religious services, but if I did I would go to a synagogue, not a church, because Iām Jewish.
(Long silence. My mom opens one eye to see her roommate staring in shock.)
Roommate: You ⦠you donāt look Jewish.
Mom: (Who looks VERY Jewish) What do you mean?
Roommate: Well, my pastor always told me that Jews have horns and a tail.
Long story short: they didnāt end up getting along very well.
@optometrictzedek and @theforestsoulbird, itās more recent than that.
Iāve been asked about my horns as recently as 1997.Ā In a public school in New Jersey.
It would b cool of my non-Jewish followers to reblog this!!! Spread this bc itās scary and real and you should know!
new ebbits! new site!
this is probably my favourite comic of all time jsyk
can someone explain this to me?
Sure thing! For convenience Iāll refer to the guy with his arms in his pockets as SG (shorter guy) and the one on the computer as TG (taller guy).
In the first panel, SG sees TG playing on the computer and is disappointed.Ā SG puts a lot of value in the idea of āmaking things,ā specifically āart,ā and thinks TG is just wasting their time
So he asks them if they wouldnāt rather be āmaking somethingā instead of just playing games and listening to music, implying that TG isnāt doing anything worthwhile or creative with their time
But TG replies that āinterpreting is generative,ā meaning that even if they spend their time just doing fun stuff, the mere act of enjoying something is creating an experience and an interpretation. Talking about something, dancing to music or sharing a piece of art with your friends ISĀ āmaking something,ā and each of those can be worthwhile and artistic.
SG leaves, complaining he ācanāt be an auteur of [interpretation].ā Auteur is a movie term that refers to a filmmaker with artistic control and vision enough to be considered essentially the singular creator of the resulting work of art. Turns out, SG doesnāt just want toĀ āmake things,ā he wants to make things he and others see asĀ āimportant.ā He wants to make art not for the sake of art, but for the sake of being recognized and praised for his art.
This comic really speaks to elitism within the artistic community, the idea that art needs to meet certain standards to be considered art. SGās viewpoint is really traditionalist, that art need to beĀ āapprovedā and validated in order to be consideredĀ āreally art;ā while TG recognizes that art can be as little as just talking about what you love.
TLDR: Art is for everyone, not just some sort of social āartistic elite.ā
ooh i love the explanation
Rebloging for that in depth and not even a little snarky explanation. 10/10
A Bad Day
@thatonetranny
OK, I know this took a long time. sorry. I could explain why, but I donāt really want to.
Characters: Tony Stark, Peter Parker, Ned Leeds, Flash Thompson
Fandom: Marvel
Word Count: 1760
Summary: Peter has a meltdown after Flash becomes the tipping point for him on a Bad Day. Ned helps, and irondad comes to the rescue.
TW: Meltdown, literally one cuss word
Peter enjoyed being alone. Sure, he liked hanging out with Tony in the lab, watching a movie with May, or playing video games with Ned. But being alone gave him space, space that the world didnāt want to offer, especially on Bad Days. Days when sounds were too loud, lights were too bright and anytime he tried to talk to someone they would brush him off or just annoy him. After days like that, being alone in his room with no one but his phone for company sounds like the greatest thing in the world.
So, when Peter woke that morning with the sun shining too bright and his pajamas feeling as though they could strangle him, he knew today was going to be a Bad Day. Brushing his teeth was a pain and he could barely swallow half an apple (he was going to be starving later, stupid metabolism). He immediately put his headphones in right outside his apartment door and started his walk to the bus.
The bus was surprisingly not too bad, yeah the jerky movements could be annoying, but to Peter they were familiar. A nice calm before the storm he knew. He kept his headphones on as long as he could, but the bell rang and the class had started. Off went the headphones and in came sensory input. He tried his best to focus and take notes while the teacher droned on about something he probably already learned with Mr. Stark. Heāll have to ask Ned for the notes later.
He was dealing with his Bad Day pretty well so far, heās had all of his classes, except for his last one, with almost zero trouble. Ned even gave him his leftover lunch to help with his lack of breakfast. Things were going well, that is until Flash decided to be extra Flash today. Peter was grabbing the books he needed for his last class, gingerly picking up and putting down each one to make sure not to accidentally tear them up. When Flash came in and slammed his locker door and all his books fell to the ground.
āWhatās wrong penis? Are you still being weird? I thought you got rid of that.ā He said with a smirk, thinking he did something cool.
Peter could feel his blood boiling and itching. He just had one more class. One more. And then he could be on his way to his ro- Mr. Stark. He had to go to the tower today and work in the lab with Mr. Stark. That kind of just ruined peter. Yeah, he loved going to the lab and helping Mr. Stark, he would do that any day. But today? On a Bad Day? Why?
āHello, Penis!ā Flash started snapping his fingers in front of his face, and that was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back.
Peter clamped his hands over his ears and screwed his eyes shut and sat down in the corner of the wall and his locker. Luckily Ned had forgotten to give him his notes and wouldnāt have seen him for the rest of the day and asked his teacher if he could give them to him quickly before class started. He honestly wasnāt expecting to see peter in a corner in a ball with flash standing there looking shocked and almost worried for the teenager.
āShit, Peter? Are you okay?ā Ned tried to keep his voice low and quiet to keep from distressing Peter more.
Peter just shook his head.
āOkay, I know what to do. You told me like a year ago.ā Ned started to recall the list Peter gave him after a similar thing happened last year at their first Acadec meet.
āFirst, look for the cause, get rid of the cause.ā He looks at Flash and glares like his mom does when he interrupts her during a phone call. Itās enough to make Flash runoff, deciding that he didnāt want to be a part of the situation anymore.
āSecond, block sensory input.:ā He dug around in his friend's bag to find his headphones and hat to block out the sound and light.
āThree, try, and communicate.ā He looks at his friend's face and hopes his teacher wonāt be mad for staying out of class for so long.
āHey Peter, you doing better?ā Still keeping his voice quiet he manages to get a nod out of his friend.
āDo you want to go to the nurse?ā Knowing the nurse will help him way more than he could.
āNo.ā came his quiet timid response.
Ned bit his tongue in thought and tried to decide what was best for his friend.
āDo you want to go home? To May?ā
His friend once again shook his head and simply said āWork.ā in the same timid voice.
Ned didnāt know what to do. He was supposed to take him to the nurse so she could help him, but trying to force him there could lead to an even bigger meltdown. And Mays at work so he definitely doesnāt want him home alone right now.
āWell, what do you want peter?ā
Now, Peter is smart, like really smart. All Aās kind of smart, memorized Pi in the fifth grade kind of smart. You get it, Peter is smart. But, in situations like these all that smart he has gone out the metaphorical window and he reverts into what Ned likes to call The Lizard Brain. There is no thought process or best decision for what variables there happen to be at that moment. There is only: DONāT DIE FROM THE SCARY WORLD. So when he gives his answer to Ned's simple questions, he doesnāt think.
āTony.ā
Tony was having a surprisingly good day. He ate breakfast, did his morning workout, talked with pepper on her lunch break, and was even productive in furthering their new stark phone they are planning on releasing soon. Overall, a Good Day. Plus, today was a lab day with Peter, even better. Peter was the highlight of his day, any day. He liked having the kid around, someone to match his level of intelligence. It was easy having him around, he said what he thought most of the time and would appreciate whatever Tony said back. Sure he had his days where communicating was hard, they just learned how to work with each other when that happened.
He was just about to remind Happy to pick up Peter when he got a call from the boy.
āHey kid, I was just about to get Happy to-ā
āOH my god, hi, sorry sir, to interrupt you, but we kinda have a situation.ā Tony was a little startled, to say the least when he heard the voice of a different teenage boy than the one he was expecting.
āWho are you? And what situation?ā to say Tony was concerned would be an understatement. There goes that Good Day.
āUm, Iām Ned, Peter's friend. And Peter is the situation right now.ā
āHi Nedās Peterās friend, you wanna tell me whatās wrong with the kid?ā hearing that there was something up with his kid didnāt sit right with Tony.
āYeah, uh, something happened between him and a classmate of oursā -Did Peter get into a fight? He doesnāt do that. And if he did, it would be the other kid in the āsituationā, not Peter- āAnd he started having a meltdown, -Peter, does he know what a meltdown is? He does? Okay.- and I was able to calm him down, but he canāt really go back to class like this. And Mayās at work. So we called you.ā
By the time Fred- Ned? Ned had finished talking he already had his shoes on and was heading towards the elevator.
āOkay, thanks, Fred. Tell Peter Iāll be there to pick him up in about ten minutes and to go to the front office.ā he hung up not even waiting for an answer. Getting in his car and he started down the road to go and get his kid.
When Peter heard Tony say that he was on his way he was able to calm down some, but not all the way. He could still feel the rumbling of the A/C below them and the hat he wore blocked out most of the light from the ceilings, but not the shiny floor of his school. When he stood up to leave the front office he swayed a bit on his feet, but with the help of Ned, he was able to get there without fail.
After a few minutes Peter guessed, Tony showed up with the heavy-duty headphones and sunglasses. Peter gratefully put them on and got up to leave. He waved at Ned hoping he wouldnāt get in trouble because of him and stepped outside.
The ride was quiet on the way to the tower but Peter liked it that way. Mr.Stark didnāt pressure him to talk when he didn't want to. The car had a more soothing rumble compared to the one in the school.
When they arrive at the tower Tony leads Peter to the couch, yes Peter remembers what he said about being alone, especially on Bad Days, but that doesnāt apply right now. He just wants to watch a movie with his father-figure, is that too much to ask for? Tony leaves to get Peter's favorite blanket he has in his room. āNo, Iām not a dad, I swearā he whispers to the posters in Peter's room.
He sits down beside the spiderling and covers them both with the blanket. After a while when Peter is calmed down more he takes off the headphone and sunglasses and looks at Tony. Heās not looking at his eye but at his ear, eyebrow, nose, chin, and anywhere else except for the eyes, Tony doesnāt care, he just wants to know what his kids got to say so soon after a meltdown.
āThank you.ā he practically whispers.
āFor what Underoos?ā he matches his tone, afraid heāll break something if he doesnāt.
āFor helping me. For being there.ā his speech is still a little broken up, but Tony doesnāt care.
Ā āYou donāt have to thank me for that bambino. I'll be there no matter what.ā Just like Peter does sometimes, he reverted into The Lizard Brain and he dared a kiss to the top of his kidās curls. He froze some afterward, but after hearing the contented sigh that came out of the kid, he knew it was the right thing to do.

OMG IT IS BACK! I CAN FINALLY POST THE ASK I GOT ABPUT THIS!
I went to college and took religious studies courses with a girl named Storm Pagan. She never understood why I found that both funny and oddly appropriate, and I never felt like taking the time to explain.
for the love of your future children, look up what a name means in all languages before you saddle you kid with it until theyāre old enough to legallyĀ change it.
I took latin in middle school. I donāt actually remember much now, but iām telling you, it was IMPOSSIBLE to look this girl I knew in passing in the eye because her name was Latrina.Ā

Me: Lady, you donāt know my life. I have looked into the abyss.
Look, I like unique names, but not THAT unique
You know, I thought growing up as a Niamh in England was bad. I now know that I was blessed, BLESSED, to be given a name that 1) I grew into and now love, and 2) wasnāt just pulled off the nearest road sign and fed through a Scrabble converter.

But why do all these names look like people who really wanted an already chosen name in an mmo?
Hello, white people in English speaking countries are cancelled.

To other autistic people, were you "the quiet kid" in school?
Iām the quiet kid anywhere honestly.
The autistic community has so much to offer those who suspect they may be autistic. Why completely block them from it? Because of a few people who might be lying? Thatās worth hurting many more people? I sometimes wonder if the invalidation of self-diagnosed autistic people is a form of elitism.
Me, lying on my bed, face down, desperately trying to get up: come on body yip yip
homophobic rights
