You’re at your local shop, and decide to use a self-scan machine. The machine you stop at is completely deserted, and has been for at least a few minutes. Money is sticking out of the cash return slot (£15, or about $20). Nobody else in the store is paying attention, and wouldn’t question you taking the money. On the other hand, the money was clearly left by accident, and you don’t know who has forgotten it and how badly they might need that cash.
