The answer is 1, why is everyone a delinquent?
Y'all please, learn your pemdas (or bodmas or whatever you learned it as)
It's 16
*sigh*
Parentheses equation is 2+2, which is 4.
Now we multiply by 2 to get 4x2 which is 8
8 DIVIDED BY 8 is 1.
I have no fucking clue how you can get 16 out of this. I donât think youâre bad at math, I think you just need glasses.
Itâs 1.
Itâs 16.
8 / 2 * (2+2) =Â
8/2 * (4) =Â
4*4 = 16
You do the parentheses, then you go left to right.
That isnât how this works.....
PEMDAS
8/2*(2+2) (P = Parentheses)
8/2*(4) (M = Multiply)
8/8=1 (D = Division)
@kingoftartesossâ
Use Mathpapa calculator if you still donât believe me.
No, Riley.
M isn't in the original problem but 8Ă·2 still needs a resolution. You have to solve 8Ă·2 as-is after (2+2) no matter what.
So you're not following PEMDAS by factoring x4 into 8Ă·2.
It's literally this simple.
I, uh, I think itâs 1, actually.
Plug it into a searchbar, or a scientific calculator that waits until the whole thing is input & that's the answer.
No need.
Everyone on this post:
This is something I've learnt the hard way. (Please excuse me if I have written something wrong, English is not my mother language)
1. Your phone calculator is not scientific. It's for basic operations, what you need is a real scientific calculator like the one in my image.
2. PEMDAS IS PEMDAS, Math never changes.
I'm literally getting a headache people are so stupid it's 1, this person is right PEMDAS is PEMDAS and the answer is 1
Nah itâs 16
im pretty sure that's not right key
I mean if you can show me why sure but my professor and I are pretty sure this is correct
This is wholesome content! Gods and Ancestors bless this post!
I stared at this for so long trying to figure this out and:
idk which is the correct way to read the formula, but I think this is the divide?
Nobody said thereâd be MATH!
This hurts... As a math professor, I miss the days when I could come to Tumblr for the low-quality porn and high-quality art content. Now I gotta read about a bunch of neanderthals who canât count without their fingers and toes.
And itâs Fucking 16. Go back to school and get a gaddamn education.
Question about the tv companion
Are everyone elseâs pages in backwards and upside down from the cover too?
No, you have one of the few special lucky misprinted copiesâŠ
I purchased a hardback copy of âThe Hitchhikerâs Guide to the Galaxyâ which had a similar misprint; everything inside the cover was attached upside down. Itâs my favorite book ever, because when you read it everyone thinks youâre reading the book upside down (which is perfect given the content of the book).
Not to be #thatperson but I feel like national news isnât fully realizing how bad this is. Not to detract from the horror of Paradise and surrounding towns but this is really bad. And Sacramento is worse.
It is that bad, and you are not supposed to mind. You are supposed to accept the new normal. Sometimes American cities will be uninhabitable. Sometimes America will just burn. You will be encouraged to identify with this. Itâll probably be a whole thing, like how New Englanders take pride in driving in snowstorms.
The city of San Francisco currently has the worst air quality of anywhere in the world because of the wildfires. (This level of air quality, incidentally, is bad for people and kills them.) These once-in-a-lifetime wildfires will become more common in our lifetimes.
I think ! itâs okay! to say this isnât fine!!
I am in downtown Oakland (right across the Bay from San Francisco) and I live in Alameda. The office I work in is one of the tallest buildings in Oakland and we are on the top floor. Current visibility is under six city blocks. I live in Alameda, which is less than four miles from here. It is not currently visible. It is scary and awful - and much worse so for the communities in Butte County.
Itâs fucking horrible. Itâs a days/weeks long brutal endurance through the smoke even for the healthiest who live and work indoors. The old, sick, infirm, homeless, and those that are cruelly forced to be out and work in this have it perilously worse. And thatâs not even touching on the actual immediate devastation to the lives in the path of these wildfires. It is just so bad, all around.
Sacramento Professor here... All the colleges in the area are going on two weeks of closure because the smoke is so bad that it hurts to walk from class to class, even with a face mask. Itâs pretty fucked up.
Hi Professor I can not attend the lab class today becouse I feel Sick  i have Nervous colon So I apologize for not coming today. Thank you

WHAT THE SHIT THIS IS NOT HOW YOU PLANT A POTTED PLANT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TEASE THE FUCKING ROOTS AND PROVIDE A COMFORTABLE SPACE WITH SOFT SOIL AROUND IT TO ENSURE THAT IT GROWS PROPERLY IF YOU PLANT THIS THING LIKE THIS ITâLL PROBABLY DIE WITHIN THE YEAR YOUâRE A SHITTER ANIME IS SHIT 2K14

Me as a college professor
Literally, my profile on the college webpage is just a Rick Roll.
I donât want to be rich, I just want to be comfy.
Want to have one really nice set of plates and silverware for company and Thanksgiving.
Want to be able to buy a new outfit and a good bra at least a couple times a year.
Want to be able to give âjust becauseâ gifts.
Want to burn incense and candles in my home daily, and have nice soaps.
Want to be able to donate to charity frequently and without worry.
Want to buy hardcover books to read and put on a shelf for my kids to read someday.
Want to have candies in bowls for people who visit.
Want to be able to take my young siblings and cousins to a movie and let them get the big popcorn they wonât finish, because thereâs magic in just having it.
Want to have a linen closet or at least a linen shelf.
Want to go see live local theater several times a year.
Want to have a bottle of wine or champagne in the house for when I suddenly need to celebrate.
Want to have a kitchen with basic baking supplies so I can bake bread on the weekend, and pies for special occasions.
I just want to be comfy.
for americans, ânot rich but comfyâ costs about $150k a year in flyover country, twice that on the coasts, and ten times that in new york, san franciso, and los angeles. in case anyone was looking for ballpark numbers.
want my own washer and dryer, or at least be in a building where the washer and dryer arenât older than I am.
want to be able to have a place where I can get a dog
want enough space that I can store holiday decorations and not feel guilty for wanting a christmas tree.

Grading Childrenâs Books... (pt 2)
Most of these are going to be about the moonâŠ
My kid is doing her part to make a more realistic shape for the moon. Â
This is a waning crescent. Â They rise after midnight to just before the Sun. Â I suppose this could be in the Southern Hemisphere where this shape would be in this position just after sunset. Â Wikipedia tells me that the author is from and currently lives in the US though. Â
Seriously. Â Why is it ALWAYS a crescent moon in most childrenâs books? Â There are other phases people! Â
Literally just discussing the merits of Sandra Boyntonâs work... Clearly Iâll need to expand my Summer Reading list.
Just as the phrase âwhat the entire fuckâ implies the existence of fractional fucks, the phrase âwhat the absolute fuckâ implies the existence of both positive and negative fucks (or else there would be no need for an absolute value operation). Taken together with the phrase âwhat the actual fuckâ (which implies the existence of imaginary fucks), we may thus conclude that fuckery is isomorphic with the complex field.
Technically, we can only conclude that âa fuckâ is an element of some norm space over a field containing fractional values; the space being isomorphic to â is a substantially stronger claim.
If anyone ever said âwhat the rational fuckâ we would have a stronger basis for â, as that would imply some irrational fucks. We could then generously assume completeness and thus a Banach space that is at least a subset of â. However, no mention has also been made of whether this is a bounded space (âwhat the finite fuck?â could be taken as implication of infinite fucks on at least some axis), so there are many unexplored areas of research in fuck-topology.Â
What the mathematical fuck did I just read?
See, I donât know that I agree. âWhat the Entire Fuckâ doesnât imply that there are partial Fuckâs. It implies that Fuck is a complex-valued function that is holomorphic at all finite points over the whole complex plane. That was literally my first year of College.
âWhat the Absolute Fuckâ does not ensure the existence of negative fucks; depending on the operations and set weâre utilizing, we can apply absolute value without having negatives. Consider the operation a*b as |b-a| over the set of non-negative integers; not only is this closed and commutative, but itâs useful when finding the absolute difference between two natural numbers.
Similarly, âWhat the Actual Fuck,â does not imply the existence of complex valued Fucks; only that there may be Real Fucks. Saying that 5 is a real number does not ensure that there are things which are not real numbers. Do we need to get into Russellâs Paradox to explain how set theory works?
I mean, for Fuckâs sakeâŠ

BIG DISCLAIMER: i was 9 when 9/11 happened, so this might be more about my own crystalizing tastes than anything else. i think itâs a pretty darn good theory tho and other people have validated it.
BIGGER DISCLAIMER: i am not saying that country music prior to 9/11 was free from nationalist, racist, misogynist undertones - i just think that these themes became more the norm!
MY HOT TAKE:
with very few exceptions, including goodbye earl, before he cheats, and daddy Iessons (side note - all women!) 9/11 ruined country music. around 2014 onward weâve got margo price, sturgill simpson, jason isbell etc., who are making country music great again (wink), but those folks are mostly considered âalternativeâ country. the mainstream country music for well over a decade now is a glut of trash performative patriotic / working-class-but-not-really lab-crafted budweiser-sponsored nonsense that has managed to sound rebellious (or has convinced its fans that it sounds rebellious) without ever actually questioning any power structure. so much so that artists who ACTUALLY criticized the government were literally blacklisted for nearly a decade (the dixie chicks)
pre-9/11 country music, though not perfect or ideologically pure by any stretch, did not have the raging american flag painted truck boner that comes to mind for a lot of people who say âi like everything except rap and countryâ
SPECIFICALLY, toby keithâs âcourtesy of the red, white, and blue (the angry american)â (2002) literally destroyed country music. it was a direct answer to the 9/11 attacks and war song in support of the invasion of afghanistan. the lyrics read like a disjointed feverish email chain letter forwarded from your great uncle sprinkled with glittering american flag gifs and heavily saturated pictures of bald eagles. the entire song is lifted from an estimated 248 peeling bumper stickers collected from rusted trucks on cinder blocks in overgrown yards, cut up and arranged to fit a catchy, formulaic tune that is almost certainly the background music playing in george w. bushâs head at all times.
âweâll put a boot in your ass, itâs the american way and uncle sam put your name at the top of his list and the statue of liberty started shakinâ her fist and the eagle will fly, and itâs gonna be hell, when you hear mother freedom start a'ringinâ her bellâ
country music and the new country musicians that toby keith paved the way for became so pro establishment and so unquestioningly nationalistic that, again, the dixie chicks who went against this grain were blacklisted by the industry and received death threats from country music fans. hell, there are folks who STILL froth at the mouth at the mere mention of the dixie chicks.
9/11 killed outlaw country - how can you sing the praises of law breakers when your main circuit consists of singing to troops? there are some great classic country songs critiquing the police state - especially from johnny cash and merle haggard - now country music artists hold fundraisers for FOPs. new country music is basically in-law country music.
you donât have to write a pro-bush patriotic anthem to be part of this post-9/11 ruination. playing meaningless songs about living in the heart of (read: white) america, eschewing the city (read: not white), and cracking open a cold one with the boys for âauthenticâ country music is also important to the war effort.
thereâs a progression of themes here:
post 9/11 top tier: war anthem, vocally patriotic, directly used as pro war propaganda; which paved the way for: âthings used to be so much betterâ thinly veiled racist laments, good for campaign ads; which paved the way for meaningless party anthems - attempts to make things âlike they used to beâ and craft a reality that neither the artist nor listener likely ever experience.
that brings us to what most people think of today when they say they hate country music: the country party anthem - âtiny hot gal in tight jean shorts who can drink beer like the guys, she doesnât like beyoncĂ© Like Other Girls, oh sheâs so into me and my truck, iâm gonna take her fishing after i finish sowing my corn - sung by a guy whoâs never touched a tractorâ - has overtaken the tragic, done me wrong, despairing country ballads of tammy wynette, george jones, and even up into pre-9/11 contemporaries like reba mcentire and george strait. you didnât necessarily have to be country to relate to their pain. now you have to perform suburban redneckness to enjoy luke bryan.
when was the last time you heard a sad country song?
after 9/11, cowboys (whether or not they had ever been near a cow) werenât allowed to be sad anymore (no more done me wrong country), and they certainly werenât allowed to question authority (no more outlaw country). partying hardy became the most important American Thing and if you donât sing about that, our Enemies Will Win.
so - understanding that country music has always had bad stuff, and that like any genre it suffers from commercialization, 9/11 DESTROYED COUNTRY MUSIC. and toby keith gleefully helped destroy it.
for some further evidence of the decline of country music, please listen to the dixie chicksâ âlong time goneâ which is an indictment of the industry (i believe it was written before 9/11 but my point still stands - the genre was on the decline and 9/11 was the major cultural event that hastened the decline).
maybe i am a curmudgeon - almost every generation of country music has had its own âcountry music is not what it used to beâ anthem, but i really think something distinct happened with 9/11.
Can confirm. Alan Jackson and Toby Keith, the blacklisting of Dixie Chicks, literally the only singer I can think of that ever spoke out against anything from 2001-2010 was Johnny Cash. Iâd also say that the uber-patriotic stance lead to the shiny, vapid County BoyÂź nonsense that lead to so many of the solo artists all sounding and looking the same.
Johnny cash wrote an entire album about the destruction of Indigenous lands and of Indigenous people, Kris Kristofferson has been an activist most of his career working closely with the UFM, Woody Guthrie was a social justice advocate and union activist, Dolly Parton has tackled explicitly feminist issues even in the 60s and has been an avid supporter of her lgbt fans, Willie Nelson made Farm Aid to try and help farmers in danger of losing their farms due to mortgages keep them and is also an avid supporter of LGBT rights as well as marijuana legalization, Lorettea Lynn wrote about birth control in the 70s and had her song banned, i could go on!
When in the correct hands, country music is a powerful medium, but post 9/11 itâs been handed off to apathetic white men who have turned it into the most useless genre of music out there.
Basically the Feud between Natalie Maines and Toby Keith started because she called that song of his âignorantâ and it was bad for country music. He then went on to tour with a picture of Natalie with Saddam Hussein. Natalie responded with wearing a shirt that said F-U-T-K (fuck you toby Keith). The feud supposedly ended when Keith had someone close to him diagnosed with cancer and Al Gore attempted to have them âmake niceâ by campaigning for the environment together (which never happened due to scheduling conflicts supposedly).
But after The Dixie Chicks were shunned for their comments about Bush, they came back and made the 2006 album, âTaking the Long Wayâ which includes the big hit, Not Ready To Make Nice. They only recently returned to touring, mostly in Canada (both 2013 and 2016, I saw them in Hamilton and Toronto, respectively). To this day, it seems unlikely that as a group, theyâll make another album (Maines has a solo album but itâs more rock than country imo).
For y'all who donât know though, Natalie Maines is still outspoken about everything and is a treasure to follow on Instagram and twitter. Also big supports of LGBT folks, anti racist and anti trump etc.
It was 2002 when I started to connect the dots and got as far away from Country Music as I could. I used to be a huge Alan Jackson fan (Donât Even Know Her Name with Jeff Foxworthy was a favorite), but after seeing the direction it was going I never looked back.
Happy 10th birthday to the greatest and most criminally underappreciated adaptation in modern cinema.
Easily one of my favorites.
