Problems Coded
Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.

thank you for spreading our words and treating our culture with respect.
it's very handy that the abbreviation for miss fisher's murder mysteries is "mfmm" because that is also the sound i make when i look at phryne fisher
mfmm is also the position that Phryne once found herself in with three delightful Italian gentlemen who, she found out later, were much celebrated acrobatic circus performers caught up in an elaborate scheme involving a diamond heist
Why did we even have that senator

Western Australians!
Are you aware that NO wildlife rescue work in WA is funded by the government?? We get zero funding. At all. And more than 80% of wildlife treatment is carried out by only 6 main charities in perth, with 90 small rehabilitators (literally individuals and small local groups) across the state.
With bird flu arriving, we literally CANNOT afford to continue operating. Two charities have already closed, and the rest are hanging on by a thread. If government funding is not received in the next budget, then all 6 major charities will permanently close their doors. We simply do not have the proper facilities or PPE to deal with an animal pandemic.
Good news! Here's how you can help:
Just use the templates to submit a letter to your local politician, and sign the petition.
Let's save our wildlife đ§Ą
Don't have time to read the full campaign below? Please take two minutes to sign the petition and send a letter to your local MP. Every sign

okay, for those interested, here is a full timeline of how we got to Count Binface:
1977: Star Wars is released, featuring, of course, Darth Vader
(Pictured: Darth Vader)
1984: Director Todd Durham releases his Star Wars parody movie, Hyperspace, featuring Darth Vader inspired villain Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: Hyperspace poster featuring two Jawa-esque aliens flying through space in a shopping trolley.)
1987: Hyperspace is released on video in the UK, under the new title Gremloids.
(Pictured: Gremloids cover in the style of the original Star Wars poster, featuring Lord Buckethead.)
To promote the film, Mike Lee, the owner of the distributing company, ran for parliament as Lord Buckethead. He ran in Margaret Thatcher's constituency, Finchley, in order to get on TV. Lord Buckethead was representing the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with Margaret Thatcher.)
1992: Gremloids is re-released. Lord Buckethead rides again, this time against prime minister John Major in Huntingdon. (Here's a fun fact about Huntingdon: I was born there! :D) 87/92 Buckethead seems to have leaned pretty hard into the space supervillain thing, with campaign promises including 'demolish Birmingham to build a spaceport'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead on TV with John Major. Other notable candidates include Screaming Lord Sutch of the Monster Raving Loony Party.)
2017: comedian Jon Harvey, having recently watched Gremloids and learned of Lord Buckethead's candidacy for parliament, decides it's a great bit. He runs against Theresa May in Maidenhead. 2017 Buckethead seems to have a wackier and also more political approach, with campaign promises ranging from nonsense like 'nationalise Adele' to gesturing at actually sensible policies with stuff like 'lower the voting age to 16 and restrict voting after age 80'.
He also made an appearance on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. As with his previous incarnation, he was a member of the Gremloids party.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead dabbing on stage with Theresa May.)
2018: Director Todd Durham asserts his legal ownership of Lord Buckethead. Jon Harvey opted not to go to court over Buckethead and handed over the reins. Todd Durham extended an invitation to anyone who wanted to be the 'authorised' Lord Buckethead.
(Pictured: the new Lord Buckethead.)
2019: Lord Buckethead, now played by journalist David Hughes, stood against Boris Johnson in Uxbridge and South Ruislip. He ran for the Monster Raving Loony Party, the UK's pre-existing gag candidate party. He ran with a similarly silly manifesto as the 2017 incarnation, but with a bit less of a political edge. His promises included 'All doorways to be increased by 1 foot (30Â cm) in height' and 'Nigel Farage to be sold for parts'.
(Pictured: Lord Buckethead and Count Binface square up.)
Meanwhile, Jon Harvey in his new persona Count Binface, also ran against Boris Johnson. Buckethead and Binface face off! Binface ran as an independent with a manifesto once again blending silly and semi-serious promises such as 'nationalising model railways' and 'giving ÂŁ1 trillion a week to the NHS'. This was also I believe the debut of his promise to 'move the hand dryer in the men's toilet at Uxbridge's Crown and Treaty pub to a more sensible position'.
(Pictured: Count Binface presenting the offending hand dryer, inconveniently close to both the sink and the urinals.)
He has a point.
2021: Count Binface runs for the position of Mayor of London for the first time, with promises such as 'London to join the European Union'. He notably finished ahead of far right party UKIP.
2023: Count Binface runs in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election following Boris Johnson's resignation. He once again gets more votes than UKIP.
May 2024: Count Binface once again runs to be Mayor of London, debuting his now iconic 'build at least one affordable house' promise. Notably, he finished ahead of far right party Britain First.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Rishi Sunak. Also pictured: Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Sir Archibald Stanton with a ventriloquist's dummy.)
July 2024: Count Binface stands in the general election, running in Richmond and Northallerton against prime minister Rishi Sunak. He debuts his promise to cap the price of 99p flakes at 99p. This is his most successful election to date with 308 votes.
(Pictured: Count Binface with Andy Burnham. Also pictured: independent candidate Robert Pownell, dressed as a fox for his own reasons.)
June 2026: Count Binface stands in the Makerfield by-election against Andy Burnham, (recently) former Mayor of Manchester running for parliament with the intention of standing in the Labour Party leadership contest.
(Pictured: Count Binface on BBC's Newsnight.)
July 2026 (this week): Count Binface announces his intention to run against Nigel Farage in the upcoming Clacton by-election. He is briefly the only other candidate in the race and by the time other candidates announce themselves the narrative of 'Nigel Farage vs Count Binface' has already bedded in. And then it was now, and then I don't know what happened.
For clarity's sake, Robert Pownall is dressed as a fox because he's an anti-fox hunting campaigner, and also he will be standing in the Farage Vs Binface election. So that's fun

for the askmeme - TT's Nightwing? I'm genuinely confused why people like it, please enlighten me (hard mode don't say the art)
Tom Taylorâs Nightwing run is full of a lot of joy for me. Itâs the perfect antidote to Ric Grayson and had me going âIâd almost forgotten Dick could have good writers who love his historyâ.
What I love about it is how it showcases and interacts with some of Dickâs best runs and wants to work with them while also re-examining them. In an environment where the fandom all constantly frame Dick in the status quo that this run uses, itâs a joy to see a writer just lean into it and go âletâs tell Dick in BlĂŒdhaven stories where heâs constantly rotating through interacting with important people in his lifeâ.
Itâs the breather and rest the title sorely needed and just so full of love.
I love the idea of Heartless and the way Taylor uses the character to re-examine the narrative around Blockbuster is really compelling to me. They both have that history that they need a replacement heart, and that theyâll go to any lengths to stay alive. But the way Heartless treats Blockbuster as worthless to him, that heâs barely worth killing? In an environment where frequently writers launch their new villain by having them show up everyone else, the way Heartless and Blockbuster fit around each other makes sense. Itâs not just a âI beat up your biggest threat and now Iâm coming for youâ moment, itâs one that has tied itself into the charactersâ lore.
Equally, as a Dick/Babs fan, Barbaraâs conversation with Dick in which they get together feels like so much payoff because unlike many of the fans, who want to base everything in their post-Crisis dynamic only, Babs is acknowledging that DICK has been the one thatâs been the reason theyâre not together since Rebirth. Dick had to get over his own bullshit for this relationship to work, and seeing that flip on their previous dynamic was so special to me.
I know Seeleyâs run for some other people has the same sort of reset and reframe, get Dick back to his basics, but for me Seeleyâs interest in Dick as a character is focused on runs and characterisation beats that Iâm less fond of, while Taylor really clearly was in similar message board conversations to me during the 2000s and likes a lot of the same stuff I like.
Is it a perfect run, and is Tom Taylor skilled at paying off the situations he sets up? No. But what it does give me is a story solidly in the âalmost there but the remaining flaws make it MORE fanficcable to meâ bait zone, which is a really enjoyable, fun place to have comics. It makes me want to dig in and analyse what heâs doing.
And finally: yes the art is that modern stunning accessible style, with gorgeous colour. And after the artist nightmare that was Ric, a consistent artist who wants to draw Dick as pretty matters a lot in terms of getting audiences in.
I do find Redondo tends to lean on the same stylistic choices a lot, so his heroes can look a bit samey, but I like that he used the run to play with techniques and references. Sure, some of itâs obviously Eisner-bait, but Redondo getting to pull from sources as diverse as David Aja and Vincent Van Gogh really helps sell the book as worth picking up visually.
What did you think of Beatrice and the pirate arc? I enjoyed it, but that was kind of always going to be the case because I love pirate things and so I could never be unbiased lol

one of my favorite story elements is "character way past their prime can still absolutely wreck you, leaving you to wonder just how powerful they used to be"
@padlocked-quintus leaving the funniest response in the tags
90% of age gaps donât matter when youâre a grown adult as long as you donât have a repeated pattern of dating people barely legal. I would date someone 30 years older than me if I liked them who gaf
This entire conversation is somehow 90% people infantilizing themselves and 10% actually people talking about the issue of men who never grow out of dating 18/19 year olds. No it is not a big deal when a 25 year old dates a 35 year old please get a grip
Honestly if youâre in your mid twenties infantilizing yourself on this level maybe you shouldnât be dating anyone
Chimes with a thought I've had for a while, actually; sleep deprivation might mean I explain this badly, but:
What a red flag actually means: something here is an indicator of a potential problem (but might be fine with a reasonable explanation)
What people have now decided it means: abuse
I've lost count of the number of times I've now had to read variants of "My partner takes all my money and gives me back an allowance because he says it's a man's job to control finances, but he's racking up gambling debts" being met with "Wow this man is a walking red flag" no Becky that is abuse. That is not an indicator. He is an abuser. Call the police. We have lost the concept of a proxy: a thing that indicates a more important thing. And it's relevant to this conversation because I'm actually going to go out on a limb here:
With the obvious exception of paedophilia, age gaps themselves aren't a problem at all - they are a proxy for the actual harmful phenomenon. Hea me out, let me explain
The reason we don't like age gaps is because of the implied power dynamic. If one partner, usually male, is older than other - particularly if the other is still quite young - the risk is that what we're seeing is a worldly wise predator who is exploiting the lack of life experience of a young beautiful woman by mentally abusing her until she's no longer young and pretty enough to satisfy, at which point he'll move on to the next. There have been enough examples of this in human history. It's unfortunately not an uncommon pattern. Genders can also be diverse in this scenario
We can't necessarily see that dynamic from the outside. But we CAN see an inherent element of it: the ages of the people involved. So age becomes a proxy for the abuse. And, hey, it's often correct.
But here's the thing: the ages themselves are not causing harm.
The power dynamic is. The abuse is.
Plenty of age gap relationships are loving, healthy and steadfast. Two people met and genuinely fell in love regardless of the outer packaging, and have a relationship with all the highs and lows and challenges and rewards as any more traditional pairing. This happens all the time
Is the age gap a red flag? Sure! It indicates a potential issue.
Is it inherently abusive? Absolutely fucking not.
OP is right - we need to stop focusing just on the numbers and twisting the facts to fit by infantilising the younger partners, and start focusing on the actual harms. The DiCaprio Pattern of only dating under 24s repeatedly is itself a proxy, too, actually - but a much stronger one than the simple presence of an age gap.
(Even so, in DiCaprio's case, until any of his former partners come forward and describe him as abusive, actually, even that is up in the air - my personal interpretation, given how strong a pattern it is, is that he's a loser who views women as trophies (consciously or not). If any have come forward and I don't know about it, of course, fair enough. But those women were adults capable of making their own decisions, even if they might later come to regret it. And regretting poor decisions is part of life! That's how it goes, particularly with relationships. As long as they weren't abused, there's no biggie. And just as he was looking for young-and-beautiful, there's no way they weren't, on some level, looking for rich-and-famous; it goes both ways.)
Also, another element of this: I think a lot of modern extreme puritan discourse on this is actually ironically down to the age of those taking part. Up until your late 20s, ten years is actually a huge span of time to you, because in your own life you were in a completely different developmental phase ten years ago (teenager), and a completely different phase again ten years before that (child). That skews your sense of what a ten-year gap means. Whereas once you're in your 30s and beyond, ten years is like. Yeah I was an adult ten years ago, and I still am now. That's two adults. Who cares.
(Anyway I am hoping and praying I explained that well enough, and also that Tumblr's famous reading comprehension skills are solid enough to follow)
The power dynamic in itself isn't causing harm either. I am BEGGING you people to realise what you're asking for here. Like, what's the alternative? Only date people within your wealth/status bracket? Do you want castes? Because that's how you get castes. By this logic, surgeons shouldn't date waiters, lawyers shouldn't date construction workers, lauded actors shouldn't date lowly techies, and employed people shouldn't date unemployed people. Rich people should only date other rich people, poor people should only date other poor people, and no one should date anyone significantly more or significantly less educated that them.
Does that sound right to you? Do you think it would work, do you think we should try to make it work, and do you think that if it did work, it would magically make abuse disappear? COME ON.
