I do think, when thinking about the impact of smartphones on society, it's useful to separate the inherent properties of the technology from the way its been steered by corporations. It's not just social media, it's social media with algorithms that are A/B tested to maximize advertising revenue at the expense of other concerns. It's not just phone games, it's cheap and freemium phone games that monetize with gambling-adjacent practices.
A better world is possible, and it doesn't mean giving up technology, but unfettered profit-driven capitalism won't get us there.
