and i think this actually works better with the script version where no one asks him to help with the investigation he just shows up bc he finds it fascinating. but the way he enters the story... yeah, that's a man trying desperately to prove something.

with the dead mom thing, and the divorce thing if you like me are fond of that hc, he's rly like, ALRIGHT. my personal life has flattened me into dust so it's time to lock all that shit away and travel to solve a mysterious murder. i am SO good at compartmentalizing i am gonna crush this. i am a flawless unfeeling crime-solving machine.

and then he meets this weird fucking mousey priest who's immediately like, ooooo, those are some very nice compartments, very shiny, very well-organized. mind if i shake them around and open them and make everything spill into everything else? :3

and suddenly he can't keep professionalism, crisis management, caretaking, affection, attraction, and trauma separate. the machine malfunctions severely. he tells him about his mommy issues. he crosses so many professional boundaries it's shocking. he sits on the main suspect's bed as he sleeps. he yells at him. he lets someone die to make sure he's safe. he conflicts with the cops. he has his entire worldview rocked. he continues to lie about the location of a stolen jewel for him a year later. he's still around a year later.
