[x] so much about jud's atypical outlook on religion clicks into place when you keep in mind that rian based him on his younger self. i find it an interesting choice to keep jud's faith intact when rian's eroded over the years and became eclipsed/redefined by his love of storytelling, which he already gave to jud in spades. rian admits he did this because it serves the themes of the movie more so than it 100% suiting jud himself to remain entirely within the rigidity of the church when his faith is based on someone whose faith very much did not mesh with the church.

and how do i know rian's faith now lies in storytelling? well on account of everything he's ever created. and also this is his twitter header lol

as someone who is totally normal about art and storytelling i recognize the symptoms from a mile away. rian's second feature the brothers bloom puts this in perspective too - that whole movie is an allegory about losing your faith in a higher power writing your story but still maintaining the belief that your story is being written, it's just being written by you and nobody else. and that's terrifying and freeing and wonderful. but anyway
