REBLOGGING FOR LAST COMMENT
Description of a skunk written by a Jesuit Missionary, published 1634 (via Wikipedia):
The [skunk] is a low animal, about the size of a little dog or cat. I mention it here, not on account of its excellence, but to make of it a symbol of sin. I have seen three or four of them. It has black fur, quite beautiful and shining; and has upon its back two perfectly white stripes, which join near the neck and tail, making an oval that adds greatly to their grace. The tail is bushy and well furnished with hair, like the tail of a Fox; it carries it curled back like that of a Squirrel. It is more white than black; and, at the first glance, you would say, especially when it walks, that it ought to be called Jupiter's little dog. But it is so stinking and casts so foul an odor, that it is unworthy of being called the dog of Pluto. No sewer ever smelled so bad. I would not have believed it if I had not smelled it myself. Your heart almost fails you when you approach the animal; two have been killed in our court, and several days afterward there was such a dreadful odor throughout our house that we could not endure it. I believe the sin smelled by Saint Catherine de Sienne must have had the same vile odor.
roald dahl was antisemitic. george orwell was openly homophobic. edgar allan poe married his 13 year old cousin. dr seuss cheated on his wife. hp lovecraft was racist as fuck. anyways theyβre fucking dead itβs not like youβre enabling their behaviors in the afterlife or something. then again I think orwellβs homophobia bleeds into one of his books so uh keep an eye out for that
the difference between these old white guys and jk rowling is that the former group is all dead. jk rowling is alive and using your money to oppress trans people
roald dahl was also racist. seuss was ALSO also racist. and these people are dead and we arenβt supporting them by consuming their work but their CHILDRENS BOOKS reflect this. so consume consciously and donβt give racist books to kids and not read it critically with them (and if you donβt it better be bc you know theyβll be able to do it on their own)
THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS THIS YOU CAN ENGAGE WITH ART BY "BAD" PEOPLE WITHOUT SUPPORTING THEIR BELIEFS BUT YOU MUST ENGAGE CRITICALLY ESPECIALLY IF GIVING THE WORK TO CHILDREN TO READ
okay sorry. Sorry if this is sorta derailing things as I realize I may be losing the forest for the trees here. But! I do actually think that the whole story there with Dr Seussβ racism is pretty interesting. Because he did make an attempt to unlearn and overcome it later in his life and career
Hereβs a piece on it I kinda liked but if you wanna hear me myself ramble you can do that too.
Community Voices columnists Lisa Mey, biology junior, and Christian Pheng, accounting and finance junior, argue that Dr. Seuss' work should

i can't do this anymore guys. dostoevsky never wrote this. please. can anyone hear me. if you do proper research the earliest version of this quote is from like a 2010 facebook quote with a magenta flower on it. it's gotten so bad that it's even credited to him on goodreads but nobody can source where he wrote it because he fucking didn't. i can't keep seeing this in your web weaves. dostoevsky the author of crime and punishment did not in fact write "you were destined for me. perhaps as a punishment". that is just simply not true. please nod and tell me you understand
"this quote was attributed to me. perhaps as a punishment." -dostoevsky
"I am going to get a good grade in ___________, a thing that is both normal to want and possible to achieve" drifts through my brain with positively alarming regularity.
the crazy thing about doctor who is that it really is the best show ever for 30 seconds at a time. you never know when those 30 seconds will be. sometimes they happen multiple times in a single episode and sometimes you wait years and years and years. and the best part is those 30 seconds are surrounded by the worst show ever, which is also doctor who
My Next Adventure
Fellow learners,
I didn't make it into any of the doctoral programs to which I applied. I withdrew one application at the end of last year due to having seizures, and the other schools said no. Initially, my mind kept going back to when I turned down a spot in a Ph.D. program to stay in an abusive relationship, and I wanted to drink myself into a hole. Then I remembered what I tell the patients I work with: You choose what to do with the present moment. With the present, you can make meaning of the past and set your course toward the future. I thus chose resilience; sometimes it comes from hope, and sometimes it comes from spite, but it is there nonetheless!
Luckily, I was offered positions in two Masters programs: a Master of Arts in Education (specializing in Secondary School Language Arts), and a Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In all honesty, my mind and soul felt drawn to the latter of these two programs, even when I was still waiting to hear from my doctoral programs. My boyfriend wanted me to enroll in the former of the two programs; thus, I still struggled to choose.
When I decided on the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I experienced a sense of peace like what I had when I decided on my Master of Arts in Theology. I have a sense I am called to, and needed in, this field. The program I have chosen seems like a clear winner for what I want in my education.
I would find it beneficial to start posting my own content again. We shall see if it comes to fruition.
Until then,
Esther

i saw someone say nobody needs to know what a .txt file is anymore. what the fuck is the world coming to
unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school
things about computers/the internet i think kids should be formally taught in schools because theyre important to know and the amount of soon to be grown adults i know who know NOTHING about any of these is quite frankly almost all of them (and resources to learn if you dont know these things, because its never to late to get better with computers)
how to troubleshoot by yourself when you have a technical problem
what common file types are
some very basics on how to use ""developer tools"" on your computer (because i cant think of a better way to refer to them) like task manager and command prompt (and their mac equivalents, terminal and activity monitor ofc)
how to read and understand a privacy policy and what your personal data is, as well as what it being collected actually means and steps you can take to keep it private
how to understand terms of service (hey. if you have trouble with reading legalese and worry about being able to understand these policies anyways, here's a site that gives basic summaries of privacy policies and ToS)
what a cookie actually is
internet privacy and your digital footprint!! seriously i dont know why we stopped teaching people that they shouldnt be putting their entire real identity online in a world where your online actions can ruin you irl
basic safety measures like antivirus software (and why you should use it or if the built in one on windows or mac is enough for you) and backing up your computer (also a mac guide)
common keyboard shortcuts (and on mac)
as an additional note: things i think everyone should know on computers and the internet but schools may bit hesitant to teach about for whatever moral/legal standards schools pretend to operate on
vpns and adblockers! (btw for most of these where you can pay for things im purposefully not recommending any specific software but seriously just use ublock origin for an adblocker)
how to not get a virus while pirating something
what a temporary email is and when to use one
red flags that you shouldn't trust a website (and how to quickly check the security of a site)
what javascript on a website does and how to disable it to get around paywalls
ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps
a guide to some syntax and commands you should know (this was literally my lifeline in my first CS class)
some performance tasks to give you things to code to practice and assess yourself
"Why is it a problem if students use AI to get through college"
Because if you demonstrate to me that you're willing to set aside concern for truth, evidence, and verifying things with your own eyes whenever it happens to be inconvenient for you, I have a solemn responsibility to make sure you don't get into medical school.
"oh, but this course is just a distribution requirement, it's not for my major"
Does saying things that are true and that you know are true only matter when someone is giving you a little prize for it?
Tumblr doesn't like to do this kind of ethics, so I have to phrase this carefully, but it's a question of character. And a person's character is clearest when they're being asked to do the right thing even when it doesn't matter to them.
I don't want to live in a world in which doctors and lawyers and politicians just ignore the responsibility to research and verify when it's inconvenient for them. When they're busy. When they have something they'd rather be doing. The world I live in is already too full of those people in positions of power. I'll be damned if I let there be more of them.
