working ever since i got accommodations has been so interesting, but so awesome.
my sleep medication makes me hella out of it in the morning, but i can't lower the dose or i'll simply not fall asleep until 4am. the accommodation for that? i don't have to have meetings before 11am. i set that time!
i have terrible brain fog, so my memory is awful. the accommodation for that? i have permission to record meetings with my advisor, and i get time to write down an action plan, send it to him, and have him say "yes, that's right."
i have intermittent nerve pain that shoots fiery electricity down my arms and into my hands, making typing difficult to impossible. my advisor gives me space when i say that i need extra time to do something because of health reasons.
there are so many other tiny things that have really added up for a more positive experience for me.
it's hard to strike a happy balance of "open enough that advisor understands accommodations" and "too open, making advisor uncomfortable," and i'm not sure i always hit that sweet spot. but after 22 years of education, i'm glad that i'm trying.

Hi fellow scholars! Iāve had this blog since 2018 but I figured it was finally time to make a studyblr introduction post. Check out below the cut to learn a bit about me.
About Me
I write under the name Esther (a name my boyfriend uses for me). I am in my mid-20s. Iām a nerd for mid-century and academic fashion. That means I try to fit most of my style into the dark and light academia aesthetics. But I also exercise a lot, so in real life, youād tend to find me in t-shirts and jeans. I donāt subscribe to the philosophies behind personality tests, but my temperament is Melancholic-Choleric, if youāre into the four humors. š
I am physically and cognitively disabled from a head injury I had in high school. The injury affected just about everything in my life, but I continue to recover as the years go on. Some of my posts will focus specifically on disability and academia. Always stay open to what anger and stubbornness can accomplish!
Academics
I am currently in my first year of online studies at Franciscan University in Ohio, for a Master of Arts in Theology and Christian Ministry with a concentration in Catechetics. Biblical studies was not the field I expected to go into for most of college, but I am excited to see where it takes me. Iāll probably go into education at this point, but my dream is to go to a Ph.D. program for neuropsychology.
For undergraduate studies, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Humanities. I wrote a book with a small colloquy for my Humanities capstone, which was published and sold by my college bookstore. We discussed Charles Dickensās novel A Tale of Two Cities and I wrote about theological themes and conversion in the novel.
I speak English (native), Spanish (working proficiency), and modern Hebrew (beginner). Spanish and Hebrew are always in progress. Apparently my accent is perfect for both. I studied some Koine Greek in middle school and want to study that, ancient Hebrew, and Latin in graduate school. Future modern languages I am interested in learning are French, German, and maybe Chinese.
Interests
Books: classic literature, great works, theology, existentialist writing
Hobbies: sewing, playing piano (classical, jazz, and some contemporary music), exercise, writing, spending time with my dogs, language learning, studying theology
Music: classical, jazz, indie pop (specifically Belle and Sebastian), orchestral goth, Gregorian chant
I enjoy meeting new friends, so drop me a chat if youād like to connect!
I have severeĀ clinical depression (I actually consensually was checked into a psych ward last year; if you have any questions about the experience, donāt hesitate to ask! Iāll reply to anons too), which is an accepted disability by the social security administrationĀ
(given severe impairment of daily function)
I also have severe anxiety, another accepted conditionĀ (given the same severe impairments)
I also have ASD, the milder end that used to be called Aspergerās in the US, but not severe enough to require any accommodations I thinkĀ
In addition to the brain fog, memory issues, fatigue, and general executive dysfunction that these disorders can-and-do combine to cause, my treatment plan involves drugs that contribute horribly to the sameĀ
Iām considering asking my therapist and my psychiatrist to help me get accommodations from the school. Iāve been wondering what they would look like, and Iāve found some that I think are reasonable:Ā
Attendance forgiveness (for classes where missing sessions will bring your grade down significantly): for days with the worst fatigue, or when I have therapy or psych appointments midday because of scheduling problems
Memory aids (bigger problem for me): receiving major feedback in writing, and maybe permission to record lectures or discussions (in my area, you can legally record a conversation as long as one party -- even you -- gives consent, but I feel like itās rude not to ask)
Do any of you have disability accommodations for mental health? What do they look like?Ā
Tue - Would you rather lose the ability to lie or believe everything youāre told?
It depends how would we would defineĀ ālying,ā by a statement that is not true or by a statement that is not true and not saying the whole truth. Either way, I think I would rather lose the ability to lie. Discerning truth from lies is more important to me.
Wed - Would you rather be free or be totally safe?
Iād rather be free. With my health, Iāve forgotten what it means for safety to be totally certain. Meanwhile, Iāve kept working toward freedom.
Today
Iām about to go exercise. After I exercise, I want to finish the second book of A Tale of Two Cities and do one translation exercise in my Hebrew workbook. I also want to play piano today.

I am learning a lesson in perseverance. An assignment was due a while ago and I am having a large amount of trouble working on it for a number of reasons. My professor was kind enough to understand. At this point, I do not know how many points I can get from the assignment. But I will keep at it.
autistic studyblr problems: pens & stationary are your special interest & you love your favorite gel pens so much that you donāt want to use them up on notes
seeing the ink go further & further down the barrel is extremely unpleasant (never mind TRYING TO USE THEM ALL EQUALLY SO THEY HAVE THE SAME LEVEL) and āyou can just get another set when you use them upā is NOT GOOD ENOUGH
you just want to horde them in a big pile like a dragon & rub your face on them & force other people (i.e. cirkadian) to look at each one individually & confirm that it is special & beautiful
being awake is an accomplishment for some people goddammit even if i fail this test it'll be better than not taking it. even if i have nothing to contribute to my group members i'll be at the meeting. i can do this i can do this I CAN DO THIS
