Why is Cinderella not seen as a traditional Halloween story? In the two best-known versions, one involves pumpkins and the other involves a magic tree on a mother's grave. In both, the girl goes to a festival dressed up in a costume that helps her to claim an identity far different from her everyday one. Masked balls are not an uncommon feature of adaptations. There's potential here, is what I'm saying.
I’m not even super into Halloween, but I love this. Like just imagine a modern Cinderella story where she’s an abused stepdaughter who really wants to go to the nice local rich family’s super lavish Halloween party. They always invite every kid in their son’s grade and her stepsisters always go but they prevent her from attending and spread nasty rumors about her at school so everyone thinks she’s a weird antisocial recluse, and she’s too run down from being overworked and mentally abused by her family and believing she’s not worth much to really push back.
But whether through magical or mundane means, she gets help sneaking out of the house to attend the party, and she just wants to have a good time and a nice break pretending to be her favorite cartoon character, but she ends up super hitting it off with this nice guy who is dressed as another character from the same show. Her outfit is handmade and he’s so impressed and thinks she’s really funny and knowledgeable, and he can't never talk about these things with his school/rich friends because he’s a jock and "cartoons are for kids." And she has no idea who he is but she loves finding a fellow enthusiastic geek and they have a great time.
At midnight she realizes she needs to BOOK IT home because her stepmother will be back from a meeting, but she accidentally leaves a prop behind. The boy can’t find anyone who knows who that one girl in the nerdy costume was, but only kids from his school are allowed to attend, so she must be there somewhere. It gets out that he hit it off with a girl at the party and the stepsisters and many other girls are all trying to pretend it was them, but he always brings out the prop and asks “What show is this from? What’s it called?” And he’s asked every girl who has come forward and is about to despair of figuring it out when Cinderella walks into the classroom, sees her prop, and full-on drops her books and yelps, "My [item]!" Cue an increasingly nerdy interrogation in the hallway where she confidently answers all his questions, and asks HIM some to ensure he's the costumed guy from the party.
This sounds like "a Cinderella story" but better
My hope for whoever is reading this is that your life starts making sense and coming together. I hope the good days are right around the corner for you.

Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .
You can also borrow some of Tanith Lee’s books from the Internet Archive if you are unable to buy them.
Here’s a link to Night’s Master, the first book in the Flat Earth series.
I cannot recommend Lee’s work enough. And it pains me that I’d never even heard of her until last year.

author's note: this is lowkey bootycheeks im sorry BUT i really wanted to write something for connor after finishing my first playthrough of the game!! i love this android so much. also, i can't believe my first fic is about this man what
warnings: mentions of drinking, first few paragraphs takes place at a bar, might be ooc connor, NOT proofread, and uhhh that's it i think... let me know if i missed anything!
wc: 1.1k
“don’t worry lieutenant, i can accompany her home.”
conner says with a small nod, looking back at your hunched over state at the table.
you don’t usually drink, but when hank (surprisingly) proposed a “small celebration” at jimmy’s bar for the success of the revolution… it was quite hard to say no. after all, it was it a victory worth celebrating.
the older man takes one last glance at you before sighing, “alright. but be safe, okay?”. he pats the android’s shoulder before walking off.
now left alone, connor turns to face you.
“wake up, detective. we have to get you home soon— the bar is about to close.” he says with a stern voice, accompanied by a gentle nudge on your shoulder.
that makes you groan, burrowing your head deeper into your arms, “just… five more minutes…” you murmur.
It should 100% be illegal for companies to make you give them your payment information when you sign up for a free trial version of their product. It is not necessary and there is no good fucking reason for them to do it. It’s blatantly just so they can steal forgetful customers’ money.
oh hey, thanks for reminding me to cancel a free trial i had going on.
Reblog to save an unnecessary charge cause it also reminded me to cancel a trial lol
god the horrible urge to vague post is eating me alive but i must
someone wronged me once
I hope their sleeves roll down while they wash their hands.
If you are on a Windows 11 computer, pause everything you are doing for one minute and:
Open computer settings
Click on Accessibility on the left-hand menu
Scroll down the Accessibility menu and click on the Keyboard Option
Under the "related settings" tab, click "Typing" which should have a description of "spellcheck, autocorrect, text suggestions."
Turn off the AI "correct misspelled words"
and most importantly: turn off Typing Insights.
[ID: a screenshot of the above mentioned Windows 11 settings, showing that Typing Insights is now turned off, with the following description from Microsoft: "Windows is using artificial intelligence to help you type To help you save time and type efficiently, Windows can learn to suggest words, autocorrect spelling mistakes, and interpret swiped typing. Take a look at the insights below to see up-to-the-minute stats on how Windows has learned to improve typing for you. These stats are stored only on this device and Microsoft does not collect the typing insights data." End ID]
"But Mx. November, it says right there Microsoft doesn't collect the typing insights data!"
I mean, yeah, it says that..... for *now.*
It also only specifies that Microsoft themselves don't collect it, and they wouldn't have made this something that I was automatically, secretly opted in for without my knowledge if they didn't have something to be gained by me not knowing it exists!
I only found this because a cat walked on the keyboard and turned on Filter Keys and while trying to figure out why my keyboard was just making chirping noises instead of typing, I happened to click on "typing insights" by accident.
Generative AI, and especially AI that is used to "personalize" and track your activity across the web and on your computer are never going to be in your best interest, it is always going to serve these companies in whatever way will line their pockets the most, and all it takes is updating their terms of service once, and then all of that data they promised they weren't collecting suddenly all belongs to them.
it's on windows 10 too. you can just search "Typing Insights" in the settings searchbar to find it
I want a new character
Then make one.
Everyone talking about posts that changed their brain chemistry seem to be leaving out this classic, which probably propelled me into activism and more self confidence in a way that I cannot put into words.

I work with kids and I've had two occasions where a little boy straight up won't listen to anything I say because I'm a woman. and like yeah he's gonna continue to be raised by terrible role models and probably grow up to be a sexist douchebag but I have three hours a week to get through to him and so far I'm crushing it. I got six year old boys who previously didn't listen to a word I said telling their shitty dads to not speak to me like that. yeah that's right I'm the teacher making your kid woke. go fuck yourself about it.
you left your kid with me and I taught him that women are people. and also to question authority. and also how to kick someone in the nuts. have fun with that.
Do you have advice for people wishing to also learn the skill of getting through to little boys who've been taught not to listen to women?
honestly there's nothing that's going to work for every kid but I've found just turning kid behavior back on them usually works pretty well. like if they say something about "girls are like this and boys are like that" be like why. why. why. why. exactly the way little kids do. they'll try to come up with an answer but usually after like five rounds of me asking why they'll eventually be like huh. idk.
in my case it definitely helps that I teach kids martial arts classes at a boxing gym with a lot of women. so little boys just factually cannot tell me that girls can't fight or aren't strong or something, because they're constantly surrounded by proof that isn't true. also rules are very different in a boxing gym so if a kid is being a little shit I'm allowed to pick them up and put them in upside down air jail. you probably can't do this in most contexts.
I think the biggest thing is that they need to see men and other boys listening to women. they're following the example that's been set for that. at home maybe their dad never listens to their mom, but when they show up at my class all the other boys are following my instructions. peer pressure is real and you can use it to your advantage. I make a point to tell the biggest buffest manliest dudes what to do in front of the little boys. now this works because those dudes already listen to me, but getting any dudes to follow your instructions could probably work.
the best punishment is the natural consequences of your behavior. if a kid isn't going to listen to me, he doesn't get to do class. this works because class is fun and he wants to kick stuff and hit people with noodles. kids want to have fun more than they want to misbehave. as long as listening to me is more fun than misbehaving, they'll listen.
because these boys are learning this behavior from their dads, the dads also tend to be the kind of tough strict emotionally distant parents that would yell at "girly" behavior or crying. even when I'm strict with the kids, I never yell, I obviously never hurt them, and I always listen. they want to yap at me about pokemon or youtubers. it can be tough when they're really sexist at the beginning but eventually they will show you something that their dad wouldn't approve of, whether they want a pink noodle or quietly mention they like a girly show. this is the part where you simultaneously act like it's no big deal while encouraging it. you need show it's completely normal for a boy to want or like that. if you can, bring up another boy or man they know who likes the same thing. I always show off my nails to the kids and bring over the guy who also paints his nails. you'll probably get "boys can do that?" comments and I usually just go "well he's a boy and he did it, so unless his hand falls off right now I think it's okay"
for me, it's always eventually gotten to a point where the boys realize that everyone else thinks it's normal to listen to women, and that if they want to have fun they need to listen too. they also realize that these people and these women are nicer and listen to them more than their dad does. they notice how all these nice people that make them happy talk to women very differently than their dad does. when those boys yelled at their dads for being rude to me, I made a point to thank them and say that they were right and their dads were rude.
encouraging the behavior you want to see is even more important than punishing the behavior you don't want to see. you can't tell kids what not to do without giving them something to replace the behavior with.
Men made decisions to rape with fellow rapists. They decided sexual abuse and torture were bonding experiences.
Language matters. Stop removing men from their active role in raping children.
The cruelty of racist white men.
Does anyone else remember when Elon was like "if anyone knows how to end world hunger for 6 billion USD, I'll fund it" and UNICEF was like "we're going to spend a month to make a plan to end world hunger for 6 billion USD and Elon is going to fund it" and Elon was like "actually, nah" and then bought Twitter instead?
I think that was one of the worst things I'll ever see in my life.
I still think that should be the thing for which he's the most famous. It should be brought up every time he's mentioned. In any news article, any interview, any history book. "Elon Musk, who was offered a chance to end world hunger and turned it down." Put it on his fucking gravestone.
@i-add-sources
Musk's decision to buy Twitter is unrelated to any philanthropic efforts.
The director of the United Nations’ World Food Programme laid out a plan to spend $6.6 billion to combat world hunger — a direct response to
It was the UN, not UNICEF, but otherwise he did tweet that and they did make a plan that he then ignored.
I watched an insane amount of TikTok and other short form videos for the story I'm writing right now. I gotta say, afterwards, I found myself picking up my phone and opening the apps, almost unconsciously. I was walking and I thought about watching some vids at the same time. I was on hold to the ATO... maybe some videos.
I also happen to specialise in gambling addiction (although I'm not practicing in that area right now), and all I could fucking think about was how these fucking apps were conditioning me in the same fucking way gambling apps do. To be constantly plugged in, consuming. To not even think about just picking it up and having a look. To feel bored when I wasn't watching them, to think about watching them when I wasn't watching them....
That shit is fucking evil.
I deleted it. I'm not exposing myself to that.
That shit will fry your dopamine/reward system so fucking bad you will never read a book or watching a movie again without it.
Love yourself and your potential enough to put that fucking shit away. Watch longer form things that require focus and engagement. Listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Read books. DO ANYTHING BUT CONSUME SHORT FORM CONTENT IN AN UNSTRUCTURED WAY.
If you MUST consume it (I'm sure people will be like 'but my classmates' or 'but my own channel'.... etc), do it in a siloed and structured way. 30 minutes between x time and x time on x day. Focus on it. Don't eat and do it. Watch each short form video to completion. Engage critically with the content. ANd never watch them first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
PLEASE. From a gambling professional, short form videos ping your SAME circuitry and you will fuck up your life and your brain so badly if you don't put up guardrails for yourself.
