feels appropriate for pride month!
I think at least for now, the thing about being horrifically busy most of the time is that it forces me to really enjoy whatever time I do get to do things that are fun. So I’m having a really good day

About to have the most idyllic possible Sunday… gonna hit my book club in a cute coffee shop, then head directly to pool day at my friend’s apartment, then go home for craft night with the person I’m dating, ALL IN GREEN CORDUROY OVERALLS AND ON MY VINTAGE BIKE. HIPSTERS WISH THEY WERE ME IM GONNA HAVE SO MUCH FUN.
Soooo the coffee is overpriced but very good. The shop is playing emo music which is a bop. They didn’t have a bike rack so my baby is bolted to a tree….

JEN D'QUEER??? IS ANYONE HERE JEN D'QUEER???
Bittern at the grocery store
A very elegant crime.
(edit: my partner just pointed out that maybe the bittern is going to pay, and that's a good point)
Don't worry, his disguise was flawless and he got away with his snack :)
I don’t think I’m the first to say it, but country music deserves to suck for what it did to the Dixie Chicks.
There’s lots of country music that doesn’t suck, but, like the Dixie Chicks, it’s not being played on the radio.
Just this week Taylor Swift said when she started out in country music, she was told over and over again, “don’t be like the Dixie Chicks.”
So for years, she avoided giving her opinions. She ended up collaborating with the Dixie Chicks on her latest album.
But there is so much good country out there that isn’t “Nashville friendly.” I love Brandi Carlile right now and her supergroup the Highwomen. Brandi also just co-wrote Tanya Tucker’s new album. But look up anyone on the Outlaw Country channel and you’ll find some great stuff.
It’s amazing how much country music radio stations worship a very white, straight, conservative, militaristic, Republican worldview. Even outside the USA. They’d rather sleep on good music than risk broadening their listeners’ worldviews.
It’s wild, because so much of country music is based on genres that tend to be extremely critical of that worldview. Like how did these folks take a genre that was fucking defined within recent memory by Johnny “I wear [black] for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime / but is there because he’s a victim of the times” Cash and turn it into a genre that basically deep-throats the boot?*
Because like…I fucking love country music. I’m not talking about the shit on the radio, I’m talking about the real country music that no longer gets played. I’m talking bluegrass, outlaw country, dark country, dark bluegrass, gothic Americana, etc., because that shit is incredible. There are so many indie and underground artists doing truly amazing things with the genre and ever since the Great Recession I’d even dare to say that American folk music has seen a revival as contemporary musicians have rediscovered the extremely anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian roots of the genre.
Anyway tl;dr mainstream “country” sucks cop dick and is the diluted, soulless version of a genre that is still very much alive and faithful to the voice of the disenfranchised. Support your local American folk musicians. Thank you.
* Yeah, I do know vaguely what happened to it, I’m just salty af.
Just look at the reception Bey’s “Daddy Lessons” got in the Country community and how Lil Nas X had to become a meme before he was taken seriously. It’s conservative and racist af which is deeply ironic considering that a not insignificant number of people in “western” or rural areas in the US are POC, and that historically many cowboys were POC (think freed or escaped slaves, indigenous people, the fact that half the West belonged to Mexico, Chinese immigrants, not even to mention the attractiveness of the cowboy lifestyle to men who did not want to get married hmmmm) and the word “buckaroo” is an English bastardization of the Spanish “vaquero”
rural, Western American folk music belongs to way more than straight, white Republicans

the idea of pointing out avery brooks "overacting" while apparently not noticing he's doing the same exact thing as kirk or picard - (literally just theatre acting) reminds me of the people who made a big deal out of michael burnham "crying all the time". when she literally doesn't that much, it's never for no reason, other trek characters cried before too and also weird to find it annoying in the first place. also i know what you are

Look I love unconditional devotion love stories as much as the next person, but there's really something so deliciously raw about conditional devotion.
I have served you and I have loved you for decades, but I will not give up my principles for you. You cut out part of my heart and took it with you down that path that you insist on walking, but you walk it alone. Even when the bleeding, gaping hole you left in my chest kills me, I will not follow you.
