It's Hikaru no Go Day, so I wanted to share my Hikago-themed bullet journal spread for May~! I'm really happy with it, and I thought there might be a few more people who'll appreciate it here than some other places >.>
I used the same font as the English HnG volumes, and the game diagrams are all from various games throughout the manga:
Cover: Hikaru (Sai) v. Toya Meijin (ch 101, Shinshodan game) combined with some basic opening joseki
Week 1: Hikaru v. Sai (ch 125, it's the one that happens on 5/5 :p ); sai v. toya koyo (ch 113, 'net Go)
Week 2: Akira v. Sai (ch 35, 'net Go); Hikaru v. Yashiro (ch 165, although the full kifu is also at the end of 177; the crosscut at the tengen <3 this is my favorite game in the series <3)
Week 3: Hikaru (Sai) v. Akira (ch 6, second game, they're just little babies aljksks)
Week 4: Hikaru v. Akira (ch 147, their first real game); Hikaru v. Suyong Hong (ch 76, the key point that turns the game around)
For most of them, I didn't pick any particularly special parts of the game, just a group of stones that looked nice and fit in the area they needed to fit in, but I did pick a couple groups for their significance (Yashiro, Suyong).

I canāt stop thinking about crocodiles for some reason so hereās some cool pictures I found of probably the second largest one in captivity, his name is Utan:
isnāt he beautiful
listen to the SOUND when he bites
and thatās not even a real power bite, thatās mostly just heavy bone falling on heavy bone from his jaws and the air rushing out from between them
That would be Cassius, a very old Saltwater crocodile who is estimated to be around 114 years old and lives at Marineland Melanesia in Green Island, Australia. Ā His official measurement is 5.48 meters, which makes him the largest in captivity currently. Ā Because Utan is only slightly smaller and much younger, (only in his 50s), he will likely break Cassiusā record eventually. Ā But for now, Cassius holds the title:
He is NOT, however, either the largest crocodile ever captured in Australia OR the largest ever in captivity.
A slightly larger crocodile has been reported (though not yet comfirmed) to have been captured at 5.58 meters.
And while the famous Brutus of the Adelaide River was estimated to be just slightly larger than Cassius at 5.5m, he was driven out of his territory by a younger and even larger crocodile, who as a result has been given the name, The Dominator. Ā He is estimated to be just over 6m.
This is Brutus, with an appropriate caption:
It is believed that he lost that arm in a fight with a Bull Shark. Ā
The Bull Shark lost.
THIS is the crocodile who kicked him out. Ā The Dominator:
And thatās STILL not the biggest. Ā
The largest living crocodile ever reliably measured was Lolong, who for the 1.5 years between his capture and his death was the largest crocodile ever held in captivity, at a whopping 6.17 meters (20 feet 3 inches) and 1075 kg (2,370 lbs). Ā He had been feeding on both humans and very large livestock in the Bunawan creek in Agusan del Sur in the Philippines. Ā It took 100 people all night to drag him to shore during his capture.
And hereās why:
Also, to prevent credit from getting buried on a separate reblog, I have been informed that the above image of the crocodile with the cartoon eyes and halo was made by @rashkah! Ā (And it is wonderful and I would like to thank him for its existence, because it perfectly captures my feelings about terrifying giant primordial reptiles.)
As far as Brutus is concerned I was led to believe that he lost that arm when relatively young.
Since then Brutus developed a habit of hunting and eating Bull Sharks.
Hereās him with a prey.
And if you thought that youāll be safe if you just stay out of Australia then think again!
Meet Gustave the Nile Croc.
This crocodile became almost legendary for both itās size and the habit of hunting both livestock AND humans.
So how big is Gustave?
No one is sure. Since he was NEVER captured.
His estimated size is of at least 5,5mĀ but some give him over 6m.
The terrifying parts are:
1) He is still growing having only about 60 years.
2) Adult crocodiles often perform a gesture of submission to him - something usually done by young crocodiles toward adults - Gustave is just THAT BIG.
3) His sheer size makes it difficult for him to catch agile prey Nile crocs tend to feed on - hence why he developed a habit of hunting either larger prey like Hippopotamus or creatures which are not good at spotting danger in the first place like livestock and humans.
And this is NOT ALL.
Gustave actually has a noticeable scars on his body - he was shot at east 3 times and stabbed with a spear or something similar at one occasion.
He lived to tell the tale - my question is:
What happened to that one dude who attacked Gustave with a spear?
*Crocodile Dundee voice* Ā Mate, thatās not Gustave:
THIS is Gustave:
And he is the PERFECT CROCODILE. Ā He is the perfect example of what I mean when I talk about (as I do) how the morphology of extremely large crocodiles adapts to the changing physics of their bite.
This is a typical adult Nile Crocodile:
And THIS is a god among his kind:
This is it, folks. Ā The Final Form. Ā THIS is what peak performance looks like.
Crocodiles and physics have an interesting relationship. Ā Crocodiles have, by a CONSIDERABLE MARGIN, the strongest bite of any animal on Earth. Ā EVER. Ā Scaled up estimates (based on Nile and Saltwater crocodiles) give the extinct Deinosuchus an estimated bite force MORE THAN DOUBLE the recently updated Tyrannosaurus bite estimates. Ā Living crocodiles have bite forces measured in the range of 5000 pounds per square inch, for an individual around 15-16 feet. Ā It is estimated that modern crocodiles in the range of 18-20 feet would have bit forces around 7-8000 psi or more.
Thatās a problem.
Because a crocodileās skull is only designed to handle so much pressure. Ā Go beyond that limit and the force of impact when those jaws snap shut could literally shatter their own skulls.
But evolution has spent hundreds of millions of years perfecting crocodiles, so PHYSICS ISNāT GOING TO STOP THEM. Ā What ends up happening in the skulls of these extremely large crocodiles is they will increase dramatically in mass to compensate for the increased forces. Ā A crocodileās skull is almost exclusively solid bone, with only minimal space for nasal passages, a surprisingly advanced brain, and some slightly porous looking framework that helps the bone distribute the force over a larger area. Ā The effect is by far the most pronounced in Nile crocodiles, which most regularly feed on larger prey and need to make use of all that power.
Compare, 26 inch skull:
vs 29 inch skull:
Both of those are Nile crocodile skulls (or rather, replicas thereof).
And just for fun, here are the skulls of completely different (and very extinct species), Deinosuchus:
and Purussaurus:
The bigger the crocodile (within a given species), the more massive the skull needs to be to compensate for that UNBELIEVABLE bit pressure. Ā This is one way to see from a distance whether you are looking at a normal sized crocodile:
and a truly extraordinary individual:
One of the things about Gustave thatās so impressive is how healthy his teeth look. Ā A lot of large crocodiles, in their old age, have very worn down and often missing teeth. Ā They do replace them many times over a lifetime, but when they get very old this slows down. Ā Gustave, at least in every picture taken of him, had teeth that were in very good condition.
Even crocodiles much smaller than Gustaveās reported size (probably similar in size to Dominator or Lolong) tend to have smaller or more worn teeth:
Lolong! It means Gramps or Grandpa, because heās a relic of an ancient world where crocs more massive than he was walked the earth. His body is on display somewhere right now though I forgot where.
I also like the idea of showing something as a problem before itās shown as a strength. Almost every character trait has two sides, and by showing the ābadā side first, it sets things up to not only make sense, but to also be very satisfying.

Still dealing with health problems (sigh) so things have been slow-going on the work front lately, but here's a little fan art I did a while ago of Gable and Angelica from Trung Le Nguyen's lovely comic Angelica and the Bear Prince which felt Valentines-y š

(this list is mainly ways non-locals can donate but by extension offers a lot of resources and places to volunteer in the Twin Cities + there are specific ways to donate time under the cut which can be adjusted to your local neighborhood)
Memorial Blood CenterĀ declared a blood emergency on Tuesday, Jan 13. MBC is the blood supplier for both tier 1 trauma hospitals in the metro area (Hennepin County Medical Center and North Memorial Health).
Reach out to your neighborsĀ āĀ especially if you know they are staying home right now āĀ and ask if they need groceries or toiletry items. Offer to pick up prescriptions, give rides, or shovel their driveway. If you know them well, bring them a treat that you know they'll enjoy. Or just ask them how they're doing and let them know you are there to support.
Connect with any of the orgs aboveĀ and see if they are looking for volunteers.
Connect with a church or mosque in your area.Ā FromĀ u/MuddieMaeSuggins: "I know a lot of regular Redditors are not religious (myself included) but like it or not this is a where a lot of community organizing happens, especially in immigrant communities."
Connect with your local school's admin office and/or their PTA.Ā It's ok to reach out even if you don't have kids at the school. PTAs are organizing mutual aid for school families, safe rides, school observers.
Find an official protestĀ or other event viaĀ Indivisible,Ā 50501,Ā FREE AMERICA, orĀ MIRAC. Students at many high schools areĀ staging walk-outs; if your local school is doing this, reach out to school leadership or the PTA and ask how you can support as a community member.
Join the effort to stop Hilton from housing ICEĀ by booking hotel rooms and then cancelling at the last minute. This action can be done from home! The effort is being organized by Sunrise Movement, who are telling activists to target specific hotels one-by-one. More info:Ā SHUT DOWN HILTON
Find people in your area who are actively monitoring ICEĀ and/or stationing themselves in high-traffic areas and ask how you can help. Check for local FB events where people are organizing and just show up.
At minimum, read theĀ COPAL HandbookĀ before you go out to observe.Ā The DFL, Monarca, and other orgs have been hosting online trainings for constitutional observers (though these fill up quickly).
When you see ICE in action, start recording. Be as loud and as disruptive as possible: honk your horn, set off your car alarm, blow your whistle. Let people know that ICE is in the area. If you see someone being detained, try to get their name and a phone number to call their emergency contact.
If you do not feel comfortable observing ICE in person, there are ways you can support from home. Just ask the people who are organizing in your area. I have social anxiety, and I had never participated in any kind of political action before this past Saturday. If I can do it, you can!
Local organizers are requesting that people who help monitor ICE DO NOT participate in 1-to-1 mutual aid efforts, as these can put the families you are helping at risk.
If you have friends/acquaintances who are sympathetic but not politically active,Ā reach out to them. Show them that they're not alone in feeling helpless. Pick a few low-commitment actions from this list and do them together.
n the 1940ās, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country.
[I]n the 1940ās, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design.
There's also a crochet version here. All proceeds from the $5 pattern purchase go to the LynLake community of Minneapolis to help those impacted by the actions of ICE.
If curious, here's an article about the hats being banned in Norway during WWII.

AO3 does not live in āthe cloudā because that is other peopleās computers, and other peopleās computers are vulnerable to censorship.
AO3 is on its own computers. It does still have to be housed somewhere, and I suppose a determined enough hater could try to find that place and go after it, but itās a lot harder than sending spurious complaints to Amazon or whomever going āBadWrong things are hosted on your cloud service!ā
When people involved with AO3 talk about āthe cost of serversā they donāt mean āthe cost to pay Amazon for space on their servers.ā They mean, like, the cost to physically own them, and eventually replace them with new ones. And the operating costs to run them.
AO3 is not āin the cloud.ā AO3 is stored on physical machines that the OTW owns.
While this is not a solution that can work for everyone who wants to deal with controversial content, it is why AO3ple sneer at alt-righters who complain about getting thrown off hosting platforms.
BecauseĀ I want us to own the goddamned servers, ok? Because I want a place where we canāt beĀ TOSedĀ and where no one can turn the lights off or try to dictate to us what kind of stories we can tell each other.
