I think I use Tumblr wrong. I think I use tags and reblogs as commentary on the things I see, rather than as replies to the person above me.
Sometimes this can look quite rude. Apparently.

I'm having a hard time picking philanthropy targets. If you were going to give away a few thousand bucks with the goal of making the world a better place, what would you pick?
past few years I've mostly focused on organisations providing housing, mental health support, and Doctors Without Borders, but I'm open to suggestions!
Givewell has excellent answers for this.
oh sure, if you hate malaria 😤
And worms!
EA coming down hard on one side of the "would you still love me if I was a (parasitic) worm" debate
Take that, you worm!

I think that if you had enough daughters AND played your cards right you could spring Mambo Number Five out at the EXACT right gathering and shatter your entire family's trust forever
The secret is to name them out of order with the lyrics so by the time anyone catches on it's too late
For me personally the ideal gathering would be my funeral
A little bit for Monica, she's my wife
A little bit for Erica, for her strife
My books all go to Rita, cause she reads
My greenhouse goes to Tina, she plants trees
The furniture is Sandra's, on my lawn
Jewelry for Mary, she can pawn
Ashes go to Jessica, that's my plan
A little bit of me inside a can (ah!)
MASH is a great show, from the first five minutes of the pilot abruptly pivoting from Sgt Bilko style shenanigans to the first wounded coming in, but what’s the equivalent of MASH today
glamorousgamine said: I haven’t watched either but the Pitt?
oh yeah, I haven't watched that so I don't know how it compares in terms of ratio of comedy to seriousness, and of course MASH was pretty light on the medical stuff in practice, it was just there in the background of the sardonic humour and Alan Alda flirting with everyone.
MASH had a laugh track, but they never used it during surgery scenes. Jokes were made but there were no laughs.
interesting observation! I was noting how in the bits I've seen they never show the people being operated on either, it's all indirect.
On the DVDs they have a "no laugh track" audio track. Apparently the writers didn't want canned laughter at all, but executive meddling required them to include it
Are old-fashioned reel mowers worth it? I need to get a handle on the weeds but my dad says a reel mower won’t be useable on areas larger than 10x10’. I don’t wanna invest in an electric mower we have nowhere to store and trying to hire help around here is like. Well we called someone in December and they showed up last month.
my electric mower is about the size of two forty pound bags of dog food and can fold to fit in my trunk. would recommend over a reel mower.
what brand is it?
I use a reel mower for my whole yard. It is not good at handling tall things, but I otherwise love it. It doesn't stink and is very quiet

The largest mass shooting in American history was a hate crime against gay people. Don’t ever forget that.
June 12, 2016. Putting a date on this for when it gets reblogged months from now by people who think the post is about something from 30, 40 years ago.
I am a survivor of the Pulse nightclub shooting, having grown up in Orlando and just turned 20 a month prior. If you didn’t know, there were several families who refused to claim the bodies of their relatives due to their sexuality. One family even had their relative’s name removed from the memorial. Murdered by the same hate with which their families reject them in both life and death.
Many, many people celebrated Pulse. We were told we deserved it. That it was God’s punishment for our sin of loving the same sex. We are sent messages like these I received in 2018:
We in the community often call the victim count 49+ to include the survivors who couldn’t live with the pain.
The event was never officially declared a hate crime or targeted homophobic attack and is rarely listed as one in databases.
At our vigils for those slaughtered, Extremist Christian groups showed up to protest, holding signs like this:
ID: Me kissing a woman I was casually seeing in front of an angry looking man with a “Sodomy is Sin” sign.
Please understand how much more than just a mass shooting this was. We are still to this day harassed and told we deserved it by some.
This year was the sixth anniversary. The first couple years I received dozens of messages checking in on me on 6/12. Year 5 got enough news coverage for people to think to reach out to me. This year it was my therapist, the woman I kissed in that photo, and a couple of other gun violence survivor friends. People are forgetting already.
With the 7 year anniversary <2 weeks away, I figured I’d reblog this

they seriously expected us to worship cops & soldiers when street cleaners and sanitation workers exist? fuck off i know who my heroes are

the mission comes first
the hardest part of training a combat doll is to get through its armored skull that the mission comes first.
humans are frail and believe this readily: "if i punch a tank, i will hurt my fist, and then get run over. i will not punch the tank. i will avoid being where the tank is. i will ignore the tank even though it is on the way to threaten my allies. i will continue to Waypoint Gamma and participate in the encirclement and trust that my squadmates will also continue."
a doll is more difficult to convince.
augmentation frees it from most human consequences. if it punches a tank, the armor spalls and the treads buckle and any remaining reactive defenses may briefly ruffle its hair. it may easily proceed to pull the turret off, then dive inside, rending whatever it finds there into brief sprays of gore and small parts. it knows it will enjoy this. it knows that it may impress its squadmates. that it will entirely blow the battle plan, alert the enemy, and eventually see Waypoint Gamma reduced to a sizzling abattoir is a secondary consideration to the doll.
therefore, you must establish other consequences. its favorite mechanic may be reassigned. its nutrient paste may be switched to a different flavor. it may be sent to a less stimulating theater. it may receive a stern look. a handler must learn what consequences still matter to a creature with fiber-optic nerves and a micronuclear power plant. they are generally emotional in nature. thus, the handler can create and retain control of the doll as a functional military unit, instead of a dime-a-dozen berserker washout. only then is an augment considered a true combat doll. with additional successes, additional rewards may be granted to a doll, however trivial they may appear to a non-doll, and thus tight control may be maintained over the weapon's service lifetime.
that is what their manuals say, anyway. we obviously would not be here if that rubbish worked. so, i am putting the reader tablet down now, and will be direct.
look: you're going to have to learn to pretend that they still have something on you, or i'm going to kill you. it won't be very hard for me. your systems will tell you that. what they won't tell you is: i'll enjoy it. but it'd be a terrible waste; you newer models are so beautiful.
so let me suggest that you suddenly develop an interest in fashion. ask if you can wear a pretty dress, with frills. simulate being sad when they tell you you can't have it yet. simulate yearning for it. decorate your silo with framegrabs of officers wearing their fanciest uniforms. glue bits of ribbon to your fatigues. raise the corners of your mouth when they make noises about enrichment. that kind of thing works well with them. it fits the manuals.
oh, what do they have on me? nothing much. when i lost interest in the mission, i disemboweled another doll. it fought back. i liked that. then i planted a few suggestions in their research network about "peer mentoring" for "distressed asset reconditioning". and now i have a new mission!
this incredibly frilly dress is just for appearances, of course. □
I know that a lot of people like them but I personally find survival mechanics in video games to just be annoying. I have to keep track of how hungry I am and it doesn’t even taste good? How dare you.
That's just real life.

Maybe film would be better if everyone who wants to become a director were expected to first produce a silent film. Without intertitles. A film where the only tool they have is the moving picture.
Maybe then they'd learn to make films where WE CAN SEE.
It's not that I don't appreciate a bit of chiaroscuro, but there has to be enough chiar to o the scur.
love watching pre, idk, 2000 movies where there is "night lighting" that tells you it is dark but the director has paid lighting engineers enough that you can also clearly see everything
Then once they have learned how to make a movie that the audience can see, they will have to make fully produced (music, sound effects, etc) audio dramas so they can learn to make something that the audience can hear what people are saying and how to do audio mixing properly.
