one struggle
every day i learn and grow, too
Hope you don't mind me using this as an excuse to post this image.
The difference between "There used to be hot summers too,” and a climate crisis.
Look, we all know this is true. But there isn't a SOURCE for this, and the graph itself is basically illegible beyond "ooh colors". If we want to be good stewards of our informational resources, we need to cite our sources.
From a reverse image search, I found the website Show Your Stripes, run by the University of Reading in the UK, which is likely where the above graph originated. It provides temperature data for various regions of the world from approximately 1900-2025. For example, here are graphs for Canada, India, and Papua New Guinea:
All clearly show a sharp rise in temperature beginning around approximately the 1980s, which corresponds with the graph in OP's post. But now we know where this data came from, and we can verify its validity accordingly.
[Description for first image:
a bar graph with 0 of the y-axis positioned at the middle height of it. the first 2/3 of the graph along the x-axis are mostly blue bars going into negative y-values, with occasional light red bars going slightly into positive y-values. in the last third, the bars are overwhelmingly red and show a strong increase. the red bars of the first part are labeled "these were hot summers", the bars indicating the strong increase are labeled "this is climate change".

I have a zombie gnome on little stump by my front porch.
Today, I saw some kid walking to the bus stop, turn and come up my walkway.
Gently, he knelt down beside my gnome, reached into his pocket, and pulled out a smaller gnome with a rainbow hat. He carefully placed the little guy on the stump, then turned and went to the bus.
I went out to take a look and it looks like the little guy was hand painted to match the zombies facial expression.
I think I'm going to treasure this for the rest of my life. Yeah, there's good in the world. And the kids are alright.
You are so right, tumblr user @ubersaur.

How about I teach you some Russian?
I know how to turn my laptop's keyboard language to russian, but as I have not memorised the layout of the russian QWERTY keyboard, I can't type jack shit with it.

Migraine sufferers will be like "it's not like I'm disabled or anything, it's just that if I do any of these normal everyday things other people do all the time, my head explodes. But I'm fine honestly, as long as I avoid doing anything ever and my environment and the weather never changes, then my head explodes a little less"
Thoughts that are mutual between cats and their people:
Yeah you're cute when you sleep but you didn't let me sleep either so I'm going to annoy you now because I'm bored. Hahah get poked, sleepy idiot.
How do you not comprehend this when I am literally staring at you. Like I understand that your brain can't understand things this nuanced but come on, how do you not get this.
I don't know if you know that what I am currently doing is an expression of affection, but that won't stop me. Knowing that I showed you that I love you is enough.
I heard a crinkly material and the sound of you chewing so I have to know what's in your mouth RIGHT FUCKING NOW.
I can't communicate with you and you can't communicate with me, so I'm just copying the tone of the sound you're making in hopes that you understand that I try.
You are doing activities beyond my comprehension, and I find this fascinating. I will never understand what the fuck you are trying to achieve here, but I am intrigued nonetheless.
Hey are you ok, you haven't done your weird thing in a while. Yeah I don't get why you do that but I know you do that when you're ok.
Some doodles about movies I watched recently
In the latest round of "Derin shares a random fact from their life and gets flooded with stupid advice they didn't ask for that assumes they have the life experience of a toddler", I am once again being reminded that food can be frozen, but nobody's told me to take half a slow cooker's worth of leftovers to the local food bank (which they know nothing about since they know nothing about my town) yet. So at least the advice is getting marginally less stupid, even if the assessment of my intelligence is the same. Hopefully this improvement persists.
you should consider eating an entire slow cookers worth of food in one sitting next time
Believe me I did my best
Did u know food can be dried as well
Wow, no way! Next you'll tell me that it can be canned or something!
No no don’t start canning. It’s hot and dangerous and a lot of work and also one of those deep deep pits you can fall into like fibre arts.
I've refused to even dabble in canning for years because doing it safely just costs way too much money. Between the lower reliability of home canning than factory canning, the lids having a bit that you're not supposed to reuse for safety reasons and are expected to rebuy regularly, and the modern price of electricity, I seriously doubt that canning my own food would be any cheaper than just buying canned food, and the end product would absolutely be worse.
Everything I want to preserve is simply better preserved in a freezer, and I'm not good enough at gardening to have a bunch of excess produce to can anyway. If I grow too many tomatoes or too much spinach, I cook the extra into a meal and freeze it. And buying fresh stuff to can is a fool's errand; buying the canned version is usually already cheaper even before you take into consideration the costs of canning it yourself. We've already figured out canning on an industrial scale. It's about as efficient and safe as it's gonna get. Me doing a shittier version in my own house isn't helpful.
I've never gotten into canning for some of those same reasons, but also because it just takes ONCE to mess it up and get botulism poisoning, and I just know I'd fuck it up and end up a statistic
Ive gone into canning (using stuff from weck bc of lid and glass safety) but tbh, if youve got the freezer space, derin's approach is a lot easier and on days that you dont have time or energy to cook, you can still pull a nutricious meal from the freezer
Canning probably makes more sense if you a) grow tons and tons of your own fresh produce, way more than you can fit in a freezer, b) have a tiny freezer and are in a scenario where you can't get a big one, and/or c) live somewhere where the electricity grid is unstable so freezing for preservation reasons is unsafe (canning takes more electricity given that you're likely running a freezer anyway, but a freezer's electricity needs to be constant). But as a bad gardener who owns a chest freezer and a desire to do as little extra work as possible, I just cook everything into stews or sauces, portion it, and freeze the portions.
Despite being well experienced in both cooking and freezing, portioning beforehand is consistently a step I forget to do. This is how I end up sawing at a block of pumpkin soup with a breadknife at 2 in the afternoon
That is so funny to me. Frozen hands, bread knife, huge chunk of pumpkin ice, pure determination.
