Maysilee Donner, the icon that she is, spends a lot of time trying to seem civilized. Not just *as* civilized as the Capitol, but *more*. So when she is presented with obvious finger food, she demands silverware, implying that the capitolites must be savages. This is pretty indicative of her character as a whole. She improves upon other tributes district tokens and tries to prove that they aren’t as backwards as the Capitol thinks. She also points out that the residents of 12 can’t be judged for a lack of style due to their poverty (while insulting Drusilla’s outfit)

Meanwhile, in the Hunger Games, we have the opposite. In the train scene in the book, Katniss and Peeta are eating the food they have been given with the silverware provided. Effie comments on this, saying she’s glad they have manners, since last year’s tributes had eaten with their hands. Katniss notes internally that last year’s tributes had been from the seam and starving. In protest, she pointedly sets down her knife and fork, proceeding to eat the rest with her hands. The point she wants to make is that manners don’t make you superior and that she is no better than the previous tributes (I love her, she’s also an icon)

TLDR: Maysilee uses exaggerated manners to make a point, while Katniss drops hers to make a similar point. Both want to show that they are above the Capitol and that 12 isn’t uncivilized, but a victim of circumstance. District 12 girls for the win!

Posting this on here and not TikTok because I don’t post my face on social media (I’m 17 and don’t feel comfy putting my face online while I’m a minor) but the Marauder’s fandom is awful. It’s been toxic, but what the non-American fans were doing during the ban was super disheartening. Cheering over people losing their rights? Over the government suppression of free speech? The entire reason I got TikTok was for fandom and the Marauders fandom in particular really went after us. I get it, I prefer setting accurate slang in fanfic, but I think people have once again forgotten the most basic fandom rule. Don’t like? Don’t read/watch. Who cares if Remus is wearing a sweater not a jumper? Don’t insult half your fandom. Shipping discourse, talking about “correct” English, like what? This is catching non native English speakers too. People were making lists of fanfic authors they didn’t like and talking about why those writers are “bad”. Fanfic writers write for free. A lot of them are teenagers, and particularly in this fandom, are in need of a safe space. In a fandom based around found family, don’t hate on the people who are just trying to have a safe space to express themselves. Anyway, sorry for the rant, I’m just really sick of fandoms being toxic all the time. I’m usually good at finding safe niches to hang out in, but not this time ig. Half the creators I follow went on five minute rants about why they hate me and all other American fans. It just sucks.
