Something I didn't know before becoming poor, which I know a lot of (non-poor) people don't know, is how often you will just be refused service because of being poor.
It's the kind of thing I've seen people say doesn't happen. It does.
People on phone calls will be kind and respectful until you tell them you're on Medicaid - suddenly they will become strict and hostile. They'll correct your wording and pronunciations, sometimes even mocking you for them. Suddenly there's a wait list. Suddenly the program isn't for "people like you."
Medical offices (who say they accept Medicaid) are open to seeing you. You mention you're on Medicaid and suddenly they don't have any openings. No, not even a wait list. Try another office.
Landlords will find out you have subsidized rent and suddenly the apartment you toured has been filled by someone else, and actually, nowhere else is vacant.
Your meals in fast food joints are watched like a hawk. If you stay too long after finishing them, you're at risk of getting kicked out. Don't even get me started on department stores.
A lot of these are generally part of the poor experience, and also a lot of them are usually worse if you're unhoused (and even worse if you're visibly unhoused), worse if you're racialized, and worse if you're visibly disabled. Black and Brown poor people have all of the above issues and also a higher risk of the cops showing up, and God knows the cops won't listen to their side of the story.
A lot of these are illegal - some blatantly. But you don't have time to prosecute because you're at risk of eviction, you're at risk of losing benefits, losing your car, your medication access, your ID, your food stamps, your spot in a shelter, your name on a wait list... a permanent crisis, a socially engineered pressure cooker.
You have bigger fish to fry. So the people who do this to poor beings can get away with it as much as they'd like. And you get to keep struggling to keep yourself alive.

Statistics that I use to motivate myself
I have a really bad case of the tinkerbells (I need applause to live) so I have these statistics I use to keep myself from getting depressed as a creator*. Here they are. They may help you as well!
In professional marketing, 5% of viewers engaging with a post is positive turnover.
5% of engagers will click the link
5% of link clickers will buy the product
On twitch, the average number of views a live stream has is between 0 and 1
According to social media professionals, 10% of users do all the posting. The other 90% may not even comment.
So if your fanfiction has 100 hits and 5 kudos, you're meeting your goals at fanfiction corp and you're getting your raise this year. If your fanfiction has 100 hits and 10 kudos you're getting a promotion.
If you make a post about your new ttrpg and it gets 20 likes, 10 reblogs, and makes 1 sale, you're doing really well!
If your stream has an average of 1 friend who drops in and chats to you occasionally, you're doing better than average. If you make it to Affiliate you are genuinely doing incredible work.
90% of online creative work is just shunting stuff into the void, and it feels so so so bleak sometimes. But remember. You're doing good at it! Your "flop post" with 3 notes is actually more attention than 90% of internet users get.
Remember not everyone clapping for you is telling you about it. <3
*these statistics are from memory and from anecdotes from various people I have met/seen posts from on the internet. I do not know or care if they are completely accurate thank you
at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you
at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.
at some point in your life you will be making some sort of cream based dessert that requires gelatin to thicken it. and you will soak some gelatin sheets in water and think "this is too few gelatin sheets for this amount of cream." this is the devil speaking. it will thicken in the fridge and if you add too much you will end up with milk jelly
at some point in your life you will be baking cookies. you will take the sheet out after twelve minutes as the recipe instructs and the cookies will still be glistening and soft. "these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
at some point in your life you will be adding a small pasta to a soup and you will think "that is not enough small pasta." this is the devil talking. the pasta will absorb the stock and expand. this is how you end up with a soup that is a solid mass of soggy ditalini.
At some point in your life you will be adding garlic to a dish and you will think "that is not enough garlic." These are angels speaking. They are correct. Add more garlic.

I'm just saying, if you're going to worldbuild magic being a "raw, primal force, akin to and interweaving with nature itself" you gotta explain to me why animals don't use it
I know the normal answer is "they just aren't smart enough for it" but idk I've seen enough media where a character uses a spell in a moment of brain-off panic ilI feel like animals could probably stumble into a spell or two like, accidentally
Also how funny would it be to see a completely normal regular bear cast magic missile outta nowhere
Also there is no way ravens wouldn't figure out spells, tbh
They're smart fuckin birds, I believe in them
Either through observing or just figuring shit out ravens could 100% learn how to cast spells I'm sure of it
Dogs can also cast Magic Missile but every time they do the projectile is shaped like a bone or a stick and they chase after it
group of wizards who ask this in-universe, and after extensive study learn to their surprise that animals are casting spells all the time, just that their magic is so fundamental as to be unrecognizable to humans. turns out the only reason acorns grow on trees is because squirrels keep wishing for them.

saw a temu ad on my phone game today for a flamethrower and i gotta say that is possibly the last place i would look to purchase a flamethrower. if in fact i was looking to buy one at all.
I think what really bothers me about video game difficulty discourse is the way that it equates "inaccessibility" with "artistic choices that may alienate certain disabled players."
like, okay, speaking as a musician and an autistic woman: there are certain sounds that I am simply not going to enjoy, right? I don't like music that's too heavy on the high end, because it sounds shrill. I've listened to music that had so much Stuff Going On at once that is literally made me feel sick from overstimulation. But that doesn't mean that music shouldn't exist, or that the creators should make a hypothetical pared-down remix just so I specifically can enjoy it. There's other music out there which I like! It's fine! I'll listen to that instead!!
and, idk, it bothers me because there are a lot of legitimate accessibility features that I think every game should have. there's no reason for a puzzle game to be inaccessible to colorblind people. there's no reason that an execution-heavy game shouldn't allow you to set up alternate control schemes. but the solution is not "make the puzzles easier" or "make the bosses do less damage" any more than the "solution" to a complicated piece of writing is "create a version where everything is written using simpler language." idk! it just feels like a refusal to engage with art as art and not Product.
That last bit about writing is particularly on-point right now, because this is take is going around:
So yeah there are people who genuinely believe that "accessibility" means only making things that are unchallenging. This is incorrect in any form of art, whether it's popular media or something more traditional. Accessibility in writing means printing in larger text, use of readable fonts and formatting, translation into Braille, and recording in clear audio. Accessibility in gaming should mean colorblindness filters, toggles to deactivate strobing in cutscenes and environments, scalable text, custom keymapping, and the ability to modify graphical settings including framerates, motion blur, fixed versus free camera, and so on.
To truly engage with any form of art, one must at least be willing to be challenged. To claim that challenge is by its nature inaccessibility is at best ignorance to the purpose of accessibility, and at worst a gross infantilization of people like me who actually have disability-related struggles that could be mitigated with some fairly basic control of settings.
Iâm panicking why are the Swedish talking about me
if fallout 76 really is a world where âevery character is a real personâ & thereâs no NPCs im making it my civic duty to be like this lowly tavern barkeep and then once iâve established enough of a rapport iâm going to nuke all of west virginia and it will be in characterÂ
someone help whereâs the screenshot of some post somewhere about the mmo player who barkept for a longass time then fucked absolutely everyone over
This one?
this post's hypothetical by itself is already ridiculous but the thing that gets me is how the wording implies two very funny things that become funnier in tandem
1. "Accidentally, the pitcher tosses a Christian baby" means this is a mistake on the pitcher's part. i imagine the pitcher is breastfeeding on the field and they pitch and they look down at their hands and they see the ball still in the glove and they go "fuck"
2. hitting the baby will still win you the game

Reblog if you are a human rights extremist who believes that all humans are equal and has no sense of loyalty to nation states.
Itâs interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole âyou need a doctorâs note to excuse your absence of even one dayâ combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like âyouâre still contagious even after the fever goes awayâ, and the overwhelming message of âif you donât struggle through it, youâre a failure!â
On my campus there tends to be a problem where even I you have the doctors note professors will still take points off of your final grade regardless of how sick you are. Iâve seen people show up to class with the stomach flu, pneumonia, respiratory infections and all sorts of other contagious ailments.
Hereâs a fun story:
The school system I grew up in put an absolutely ungodly amount of pressure on kids to Show Up Every Day No Matter What. Many schools are like this, but looking back, my townâs was borderline fucking dystopian. They asked me why I didnât just âpostponeâ a surgery at one pointâ when I was fifteenâ to give you an idea of how monumentally obtuse these people were.
So, in elementary school, I started having chicken pox symptoms, right? They were mild because I was vaccinated (yay!) but my mom recognized them quickly and took me to the doctor, because my mom is a reasonable human being with standards. The doctor said âyup, youâve got those pox, it may seem mild but please for the love of god DO NOT take her to school, she is very contagious even though she may FEEL okay.â
So I had to stay home from school until I got clearance from my doctor to go back. I was an angry little gremlin the whole time, because I wanted to go to the school library and read books about the human skull, but my mother said, âno, you cannot leave this house, and do not scratch the bumps please.â So I sat at home and tried not to scratch the bumps, like a good little gremlin.
A few days into my Chicken Pox Related House Arrest, we got a letter from the school. I was far from the only person with chicken pox, as it so happened. Like⌠a tenth of my second grade class had Confirmed Pox. We all fell ill within DAYS of each other.
So how did this happen, you ask? Well, a kid had chicken pox, and he came to school anyway. âAh, well perhaps they didnât know,â you may very well say. âMaybe his parents didnât notice!â No. No, they noticed. In fact they KNEW it was CHICKEN POX. They sent him to school anyway.
The kidâs parentsâŚâŚ.. were, in fact, teachers at the school. And they KNOWINGLY made him go to school sick, because they didnât want to risk hurting his precious âperfect attendanceâ record. They figured that since he wasnât, like, Literally Dying, it was better for him not to miss school. Never mind the fact that they were actively endangering hundreds of little kids.
Fast forward to my freshman year of college. A kid came to class with mumps because he âcouldnât afford to missâ. Guess what happened? Mumps outbreak! Diseases are, as it turns out, good at being diseases! Vaccinations are phenomenal, but they can only do so much, and some people rely on herd immunity to not be killed by preventable illness.
This entire attitude needs to die. Itâs dangerous. Food service workers are forced to show up sick, little kids are forced to show up sick, college students show up sick because theyâre afraid of flunking out.
And on top of it all, misinformation campaigns are encouraging people not to get vaccinations! Itâs 2019 and weâre flirting with the plague! Next thing you know some blogger is gonna be like âactually we should all be fucking rats and eating our meat raw, death to all science and god bless americaâ
Many kids at my school will show up really sick because we only get like three days of excused absences without a doctorâs note.
this is what those in literary academia call âforeshadowingâ
(note the dates)
this post aged like an ice cube in an oven
worst part is! ITâS STILL HAPPENING! SCHOOLS AND WORKPLACES ARE STILL LIKE THIS!!! THEY LEARNED NOTHING!!!!!!!
Literally looking like the kind of note you find in a post apocalyptic horror game jesus
