What possessed me to decide I want to apply for a PhD candidacy?
Because I would really like to have a conversation with that demon right now as I am neck-deep in applications trying to figure out why exactly I want a PhD. Because I don't think saying 'Well, I want the ceremony because covid got my BS and MSc ceremonies and all their makeups so I would like to walk across that stage. And I think the hat looks cool' is going to work out in my favour.
Also... what are my research interests? Ah, bacteria are cool and I want to learn more? Again, unacceptable answer. True but not good enough for the application committees.
Wanna know how to feel instantaneously out of place?
Walk into a tattoo parlour/piercer in business attire (I'm talking proper trousers, a button-down shirt, blazer and heels, with a coordinated necklace and earrings) and ask them to take out your cartilage piercing because you tried everything at work including the latex glove trick and all you succeeded in doing was irritating your ear. But you need it out because you have an MRI the next day and your other solution was figuring out how to cut the back off.
That was me this afternoon after work. And apparently, I needed an appointment? The website said 'walk-ins welcome' and it wasn't busy. And I was on crutches (Hence the MRI).
So I was creating a study guide for my immuno test next week. If you have ever taken immunology, you understand, it is a lot of material to understand and remember. Anyway, so I’m rewriting my notes trying to remember what macrophages do and whatever. I just sometimes forget that I like to tell stories…my poor roommates have to listen to my stories all the time. They were happy when I lost my voice due to my mid-semester illness this morning.
Anyway, I was reading through it, studying as one does when they are in college and I realized it sounds like one of them alien posts. Like humans find aliens and the over-excited alien is writing about the human post. Because this entire thing is like “the human immune system is highly complex! The innate immune system exists because the human’s ancestors had lived through any infection they had until the reproduced…Humans are exposed to many thing, including their own cells that may trigger reactions! Why that ever evolved…I have no idea.” That’s what this entire thing sounds like, complete with explanation points, my cue to know it is important information, color coded and reads like a guide.
In other words I spend five hours creating a ten page hand written guide to the human immune system from the point of view of an alien scientist. I just hope my inner alien scientist knows all her information and can remember it come Tuesday
An Update on This: I know it has been about 18 months… but I am actually working on an actual ‘manual’. If the pandemic has taught me anything, it is people don’t really understand how their immune system works and how vaccines work either. And I hope to help people understand, in layman’s terms (and in a fun way) how our bodies work!
As a scientist (and possible future educator), I have always believed that science should be accessible to all and I think this project will be a start!
Another update on This (22 September 2021)
I am still working on this project and now I actually have time! Joys of no longer being a student. But I also want to continue to learn and explore science outside of the lab I work in.
The idea I am working with now is to start and run a science blog based on this original idea of the Alien Scientist talking about the human immune system. I figured it would be an interesting way to explore different aspects of biology (mostly human and microbial). Also I think it would make for a fun and exciting way to explain complex scientific concepts to a large audience. It would allow me to stay up to date on new research, review other things and give me a chance to demonstrate my scientific writing and teaching abilities.
And of course, make science accessible for all!
Still working on this, I swear!!! I'm just a bloody perfectionist
My newest culinary creation (that somehow worked and didn't end up in the trash) is fried rice carbonara, exactly what it sounds like. Leftover rice that I heated up in chicken stock so now it is starting to become risotto like... fried pancetta, garlic, a shit tone of parmesan, sriracha because I like spicy and fried rice is Asian. Then some green beans to make it 'healthy' finished with an egg... it takes like spicy carbonara with the texture of a risotto (no wine...) finishing with the spice. Also because turmeric is good for inflammation... it is bloody yellow so it looks like a paella (I know that is traditionally made with saffron)
I'm probably going to culinary jail for this monstrosity.
Did you know that wireless chargers can fuck up the magnetic strip on the back of credit cards, ID cards, and things like that?
Because I bloody didn't until today. And now I'm the idiot who has a *IVY LEAGUE COLLEGE* ID card that doesn't work and the bus drivers think I'm a moron now. That's all I use the card for. To ride the bus and now it doesn't scan and they are like 'fine, I'll let you ride today, but you need to get this fixed'.
And I'm like 'I don't know what's wrong! it worked yesterday!' Until this afternoon when I ended up going down some research rabbit hole and was reading about magnetics and credit cards and wireless chargers.
So now I have to email HR and tell them that I wiped my ID card with a wireless charger because I forgot to take my phone case off and I store my ID in my phone case. And before the Bus people make me walk up the hill with a bum leg.

Good news! The only thing my doctor's appointment revealed is 'you don't have an obvious fracture in your leg but I have absolutely no idea what's wrong with you.'
Bad news: I gotta wait for orthopaedics to call me and have no idea why it still feels like somebody is stabbing me in my tibia. But hey, at least it isn't an obviously broken leg? Like there can be a not-obviously broken leg?
Today while scrolling through Instagram I asked myself 'why the hell am I not in Hungary? Everyone I know seems to be in Hungary today.'
Then I realise that I am in fact an idiot. I do not know anyone currently in Hungary. My so-called friends in Hungary are all the Formula One drivers and teams I follow. I spend a good minute this morning bemoaning being stuck in Ithaca, NY while my friends were living it up in Budapest. I said this to another person. Then I realised I personally do not know Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen or any of the other drivers I follow (which let's be honest, are all of them currently on the 'gram). My actual friends are not in Hungary but in London (still significantly better than the Middle-of-Nowhere).
Still have no idea how I got a master's degree...
How I spent the Fourth of July: Informing my family (After returning from the UK 6 hours before) that I, within the next year, will be moving to the UK either for a PhD or a job. And I am in the process of looking for a position. I plan on living in London as many of my friends live there and I don't care that my salary will be slightly less.
Because I realised that while standing in central London that was where I wanted to be. And if I could have gotten away with it, I would have never gotten back on the plane.
So it's official, I'm going to be an ex-pat. And my family just all nodded and said I have to visit once and a while. I found the place that felt like home and it is across a bloody ocean.
I managed to survive 7 days in the UK with my little brother who has never traveled further than the Bahamas before.
We're both still alive and in one piece and I only thought about throwing him into the Thames three times. And he even didn't get mad at me when I lost the hostel key at 3AM and we had to sleep in reception because nobody at the hostel would answer the phone (it was supposed to be 24hr reception).
Couldn't get him to try haggis (we visited Scotland) or fish and chips. Did convince him to get a Wetherspoon's pitcher though. He likes Purple Rain.
And I've officially decided that I want to live in the UK and will be figuring out how to do so as a foreign national. Either a sponsored job or a PhD programme!

seriously considering quitting my job and dropping everything and moving to somewhere where I herd goats and grow things in my garden and frolic through fields
The reason for this consideration is because I cried today at the gas pump when I spent $49.58 on gas just so I can go to work this week to get paid money to buy more gas and pay back student loans
Today marks the 1 year anniversary of my friends coaxing me out into our flat's living room with the promise of jager and vodka, only to be forced to sit on the sofa to watch Eurovision
I (American) knew what Eurovision was as I did Irish dance and had seen every Riverdance performance on Youtube at least once but had never actually watched it live. My friends in Glasgow (1 Irish, 2 UK, 4 French, 1 German, 1 Spanish... then there were a few from various Asian countries) my European friends told me to stop doing homework and come drink with them (I was stressed and refusing to do anything social that didn't involve schoolwork) but I am a sucker for jager and said 'one drink won't hurt'
Next thing you know I think I can not only speak fluent Italian but sing in it too and there was way more than one drink involved as is the case whenever someone brings out the Jagermeister at a casual event
So today is the anniversary of my first Eurovision experience and I'm trying to figure out how to get it here in the US because I had to move back home...
