the thing about belle is that it wants to be an idol anime because suzu wants to be an idol. she wants so badly to be someone else, someone who isn't caught up in grief. but the stunning outfits and visuals are escapism. because the climax isn't some grand concert. it's a girl who's overwhelmed with grief learning to reach out again to a community of people. she's got a peppy song that she sings on a flying whale about reinventing yourself, but the ones that really hit hard are the ones about her loneliness and grief in trying to navigate a world without her mother.
