Vibe check your characters

No thoughts. Just Whumpee drifting in and out of consciousness, muttering nonsensical slurred protests, and weakly trying to pull st their restraints before their eyes roll back and they slip away into unconsciousness again.

mentor characters realizing that their mentee is traumatized too. the first time they make an offhanded remark about drinking too much after work, the first time they run into each other making coffee at 5 am because they know they won't be able to get back to sleep after a nightmare. the guilt of not being able to protect their kid from the same things they've seen. knowing they're wearing the trauma like a badge of honour. knowing it's nothing to be proud of, but having nothing to say to discourage them, because they made the same choices too, right?

I honest to god think there’s something personality-revealing about the word a character will choose to describe vomiting. Because, like, we have so many words for it. Are they gonna say the more crass and casual “hurl”? True neutral of “throw up”? The more clinical “vomit”? Overly polite “be sick”?

when men are hiding the fact that they're all broken and battered and bruised up underneath their clothes, they're basically wearing lingerie. to me

That heavy pause when you can tell whumpee is trying to decide whether or not to finally admit that something is wrong or hide behind another "I'm fine" / "[It's] Nothing"

basically the best thing any character can do is decide they don't want to be afraid anymore - in fact they never want to be afraid of anything ever again - and take action so drastic they fail to realise that this too is a decision motivated by fear. or to account for the Consequences of that.

[with obvious perverted intent] hey. don't you want to release the safety catches on that character. don't you want to flip off all the switches holding them back and let the control rods go.

Sure we all love it when caretaker asks "are you okay" and stoic whumpee goes "I'm fine" when clearly not. But what if whumpee is so out of it that they just shake their head and lean on caretaker's chest.

Just thinking about a whumpee repeating, “No, no! I’m okay! Don’t worry! See? I’m okay!” Over and over, almost pleading. They’re saying it more for themselves than anything, praying that they’re actually okay. In denial that anything is wrong.
