I think Eren had realized that he can’t keep clinging and placing his own feelings first and be extremely reluctant to make any sort of sacrifice/compromise while everyone around him is dying on his behalf.

He probably should have told his friends about his plans first but he also realized that deep inside they have different goals and mindsets and they probably wouldn’t agree with him entirely.

Armin is a pacifist, Mikasa is just content for them to be together, Jean’s morality will prevent him from doing any sort of “bad” things, etc. Not one of them wanted to make any sort of sacrifice at that point or get their hands dirty to achieve freedom, meanwhile, their enemies won’t stop at nothing to erase them from existence.

And so, if Eren continues being the way that he was, getting overprotective of his friends, unwilling to make any sort of compromise when it concerns them because he “cares about them too much”, isn’t that being selfish and biased? What about all the others that died for his sake? This whole fight for freedom doesn’t just revolve around themselves anymore, yes? It’s for Eldians and their future as he saw from Grisha’s memories.

I never drew Eren past his 16 year old self because I think he’s really cute there, but hey, here’s 20ish year old pontytail Eren instead.
