Okay, I'm not even watching this show but I've seen screenshots of this guy choking his wife and telling her death threats...
"such a standard for cdramas green flags"
The flag? 🟥
The whole green flag / red flag discourse is utter nonsense anyway but honestly if you're not even watching it then you're not really qualified to comment on the content or context?
I am watching it and at no point (up to ep 16 of 28) has he choked her and the closest he has come to death threats is pretty early on in the show when she was accusing him (entirely unjustly) of being all manner of horrible things and he, somewhat understandably, told her that - to paraphrase - if he were anyone else, saying such things would land her in a whole heap of trouble. Did he do so in a rather threatening manner? Absolutely. Did he genuinely threaten to kill her? Absolutely not.
As far as cdrama MLs go he is fairly standard - he is definitely manipulative and somewhat unhinged (he kills people but ofc they are bad guys and deserve to die) and he absolutely started off seeing her as just a pawn in one of his (with noble purpose ofc) schemes... but he is also the only person in pretty much the entire show who respects her as a person and respects her agency and insists on her being free to make her own choices (even if that choice means she will leave him). Something literally no-one else - not her dad, her mum, or her original sweetheart - has done.
It's fine if the show is not for you and not something you want to watch... but out of context screenshots alone are not sufficient to have an informed opinion on the show or the characters.
Okay, I'm not watching it but I have eyeballs and this is choking and death threats right here:

I am someone who IS watching the show and am up on all the eps out and while he's definitely better than her terrible adoptive father and better than her first love is gonna end up being, in no way is he a good husband material/choice/green flag/not problematic on anything but a curve compared to the other men:
forced her into marriage as part of his political plans, with no opinion or interest as to whether she's OK with it. Just because he may have gone in with 'ah, I will give her a divorce later' does not negate it in any way. Even if we go with 'oh this is not really historical' doesn't help - if this is a proper period setting, he's fucking with the woman's most important choice/action in life but if it's ahistorical modern dress up and marriage matters less, then all the murder/choking/death threats/etc is not excusable because in a modern person playing dress up they are definitely not good.
repeatedly physically threatens her. He may mean some of it, he may not, fact remains, she's a woman half his size and with no battle skills.
is rude and insulting to her and just acts awfully to her whenever he thinks she's meddling into his family affairs (she is his wife, mind you.)
All the threats culminate in him freaking out she'd reveal his temporary blindness, choking her - literally grabbing her by the neck - threatening to kill her and to destroy her reputation.
his other wife justifies all of this by saying hey at least he's not worse and it doesn't matter if he has a temper as long as it's with his loved ones (which reminds me of the old Russian folk saying "if he beats you means he loves you.")
Now, do I care he's red flag/toxic/ other term du jour? Heck no. My favorite character last year was possibly Di Lin from Eternal Brotherhood 2, who massacred whole villages of civilians on his march to rescue his brothers so the news wouldn't leak. I don't even care if the characters are toxic vis-a-vis a partner. I love me toxic fictional dudes - I am salivating for Overdo to drop and both ML and FL in this one make this dude seem a saint (and the same goes for every FWSC adaptation ML and some FLs) and I enjoy my minis where half of them appear either ML is torturing FL or FL is torturing ML. One of my top 5 cdramas this year was Generation to Generation and ML is a certified headcase; we are not even going to get into what kind of games the bulk of characters of Veil of Shadows, my favorite drama this year and probably in my top 5 of all time, got into.
But! He really is a toxic dude and by any sane, non drama standard, not a great partner. And that's fine, that can make for a story with teeth (my issues with Key are many but ML being toxic ain't one of them) especially if the drama does not try to claim he's green like I am color blind (which this one is rather guilty of) but one can't possibly say he's an ideal dream boat and a great partner! The moment there is choking and a death threat, the man is automatically excluded from sweetheart safe choice label.
Lbr, NO cdrama ML in a non-problematic green flag guy! I can't think of a single one from recent years can you...? 😂
But as you say, that's not relevant (to me) to enjoyment of the drama and to whether he is an interesting character.
My point was more that you can't really make any kind of accurate judgement about a character (or a drama) based on a couple of out of context screenshots. I mean... sure you can make the judgement that it's not for you and that's entirely valid... but any opinions you have as to the nature of the characters or the story is going to be woefully ill-informed...
Writing tips:
“You feel the bulge in his pants” - implies that you are feeling some guy’s penis, may be sexy depending on context
“You feel the bugle in his pants” - implies that this guy has a military horn in his pants, invites confusing questions like why does he have that and how big are his pockets
Both options convey that he's horny

Ohhh that bit... yeah this proves my point that you can't rely on out of context screenshots as to the content and nature of a show.
If you'd watched the show you'd know the context of this moment and what preceded it. He is injured - hit his head and dizzy and temporarily lost his sight - and she has realised he is blind, on the eve of a vitally important archery contest upon which the fate of his country, and his plans for social reform, rests. He freaks out and warns her "If you let anyone know that there's something wrong with my eyes, I'll kill you."
Taken out of context from a single screenshot he looks like an abusive man choking and threatening a scared woman.
If you actually watch the show, he is injured (he was literally spitting blood and hanging onto the horse to stay upright moments ago) and freaking out and warning her that if she says anything it would cause disaster. He's also not choking her - she's shocked by his actions yes, and initially aggrieved, but she can breathe just fine. Seconds after this moment she easily pulls free of his grip and he all but collapses on her shoulder, she then conceals his injury from a group of his soldiers and helps him back home to get medical attention. She is not afraid of him and at no point thought he was going to kill her.
Again, the whole green flag thing is utter nonsense and lbr most cdrama MLs exhibit behaviour which would be horrific IRL but you really cannot pass judgement on something that you have such very limited information on.

My ideal fictional men, ladies and gentlemen.
Unhinged as fuck...
And making it everyone else's problem...
I mean...
To be fair, his girl also has a lot of screws loose...pointing guns at him:
Marrying his brother...
Weeping over his unconscious self...
Covering him with her body...
But I guess it lots of loose screws will lead to a lot of loose screwing. Hopefully.
Or will it? So not the penetration I was looking for.
therapy should just be One Session where they just slough off all the Goo and then you’re done. Will someone please take my Goo
I feel like this reminder shouldn't need to be given in a hobbyist space, but apparently it does based on comments I've received/discussions within various fandom communities.
While some people are here for clout, the vast, vast majority of fanfic writers write for ourselves, and then we post our work online in case anyone in the community might like it. But we wrote it for ourselves.
I have had some very kind readers over the years, and I am immensely appreciative of their lovely comments. But I did not write any of my fics for them.
This means that no, I did not take your learning disabilities/vocabulary/personal preferences/ADHD into account. Firstly because I cannot possibly know any of those things about strangers. But secondly, and most importantly, because I did not write it for you. I catered to my reading level, and my personal tastes. Because it is for me. The act of publishing it online is simply me going, 'Hey, since you're into some of the same things as me, maybe you'll like this.' I don't care about your preferences or reading level. It's your job to seek out reading material that is a match for you, personally. Writers are not your mommy. If you spit out your peas, we're not going to go, 'Ok, well what about blueberry? Apple sauce? Carrots? What do you want to eat??' Frankly, I don't give a fuck. It's literally not my job to.
Please witness this absolutely insane video of Cindy Bruna trying to get out of a car in a Giambattista Valli dress at Cannes

“They’re not smarter or faster they’re buying up others’ lifetimes to do their chores”
“They’re not smarter or faster they’re buying up others’ lifetimes to do their chores”
[images: series of tweets from @realavocadofact. tweets read, “they’re not elite they’re rich”, “they’re not better they’re better supplied”, “they’re not smarter or faster they’re buying up others’ lifetimes to do their chores”, “there is nothing wrong with you; you’re doing your best in a game rigged against you, probably not enough people and fruit tell you that”]
I see this reaction a lot, and I gotta say, it always makes me a little sad. Whenever the conversation of exploitation of labor comes up, inevitably someone finds themselves struggling with the guilt of “It is so important to me not to contribute to exploitation but I cannot do this thing myself and need someone else to do it for me, so how do I even approach that?”
Exploitation isn’t in the hiring of a service worker. Exploitation is in the respect you show them for their ability to perform the service you need from them.
I have been on a cleaning service staff before, and also been someone who hired a cleaning service, and I can tell you for sure that a lot of cleaning crews (especially worker owned ones) absolutely LOVE their clients and are genuinely happy to be able to make their lives better. The clients they don’t like? Those are the ones who disrespect the workers.
When I was involved with a cleaning service, we had everything from little old ladies living alone to McMasions with five cars as clients, and I can assure you that whenever there was someone who clearly hired us because they were overwhelmed or unable to keep their space clean, those were the households where you put a little more elbow grease in and did a deep clean even when it wasn’t paid for, because you could see how much these people were trying and struggling, and they were always so kind and generous and often embarrassed when talking to you about the job.
I only hired a service a couple if times in my life, but whenever I did, I worked with the same people as often as I could, tipped as well as I could afford, and tried to be the kind of client I would want to have, and that’s how I often ended up with my baseboards cleaned too, or my fridge scrubbed and organized or a restorative clean done in a high use room even when that wasn’t what I had scheduled or paid for.
I’ve heard the same thing from all manner of service workers over the years. Many of us like our jobs! We enjoy the work. It’s the customers that can do a number on you.
I think a lot of people are afraid that by needing a service they are inherently exploiting or harming the people who perform that service, and they really aren’t. But it does benefit a capitalist system for us to all be burnt out and overwhelmed because we’re too afraid to hire the help we need. Be upfront and honest with service workers about what you need and why you need it, and treat them with dognity and kindness while they perform your service, and I promise you they will always be happy to answer your call.
HIRING A PROFESSIONAL TO CLEAN YOUR HOUSE ISN’T MORE EXPLOITATIVE THAN GOING TO A DENTIST OR ORDERING A PIZZA
We all fucking depend on each other, it’s about respect and treating one another as fellow humans instead of seeing them as below us

I hope you transition and I hope it's the best thing you ever did and I hope you never look back and I hope you finally feel comfortable in your own skin
saying this as a lesbian who loves women's boobs--sexually, even! but i don't think that we as a society should consider breasts inherently female or inherently sexual. a flat chest should not be seen as the "default" for gender neutrality but instead just one way a person can present. boobs should be normal. anyone of any gender can have boobs
Every day I handle more money than I will ever make. Every day.
At the start of my employment, my boss showed me videos of people stealing, and we both had a chuckle about it. How silly they were! There was a camera overhead, and it’s not to watch the shoppers. See, we can’t actually stop shoplifters. They get away with it maybe nine out of ten times. But we, who are watched and tallied and witnessed? We are always caught.
At first it was hard to hold one hundred dollars bills. An amount I had never seen before. An amount that didn’t exist in my household. It’s normal now. Here is something that is not for me.
“What the hell, I’ll take another,” says the man, pondering our 200 dollar watches. What the hell. Total comes to 580 and not even a flinch in his face. I have been working for 11 hours today and made only 110 dollars. It will go to my rent. Today I work for free, it feels. When I get my check, I will have 35 dollars left for food and saving.
The six hundreds he hands me go into the cash register. For a moment, I imagine having money. Then I put it away, counting out his change.
I know for a fact we sell our products for double what they are worth. That I could be making commission. That they could hand me those 580 dollars and change my life and not even mark the difference in their checkbooks. He’s not the only sale they make today, but I am the reason they made it. He’s not the only one spending 600 dollars, but if I hadn’t spent two hours with him telling me about his life, he wouldn’t have spent any. I go home. I don’t own a watch.
I have watched and rewatched a video on how to make salmon four ways. My shopping list is always the same. Pasta. Rice. Tuna. If I can afford butter it was a good week. I dream of the world I will never walk in, where I can throw the best fish fillet in the cart with a shrug. I hold hundreds in my hand and look up at the camera. I put them under the cash drawer.
I go to work. I scrap together my savings. I eat my bowl of rice slowly. My manager takes a paid week off from work just for his birthday. He owns a yacht.
I’m not worth the cost of a watch.
i wrote this while i was working at orlando’s walt disney world parks.
i was part of their college program. i moved to the state for it. they legally owned the building i was living in and still charged me rent. i ostensibly was being charged to work for them. it was a 2 bedroom apartment and they placed 6 adult women in it in forced triples.
as many as one in ten disney employees have experienced homelessness while working for the company. despite huge efforts to unionize, strike, or otherwise demand fair treatment; disney has refused to increase employee quality of life.
disney admits publicly that a good portion of their success is because the employees (“cast members”) are dedicated, passionate, and selfless. this is never reflected in pay. even “face” characters (ie those that are princesses etc) make barely above a minimum wage.
at the time that i worked there, i made $8.50 an hour. at one point i was asked to create a human shield around a bag because a bomb dog had alerted to it. for eight fucking dollars an hour.
i now work a very cushy office job. i have bought the salmon and cooked it all four ways.
i go to the store. i am nice to the person behind the counter. she looks up at the camera while she counts out my change. there is nothing fundamentally different about her and i.
we are both worth more than the watch, anyway.

OP: Why couldn’t traditional Chinese Yinpiao银票/silver drafts be forged if they were merely slips of paper? (cr大明宝钞,渐越)
Traditional Chinese yinpiao/silver drafts were paper vouchers issued by private banks starting from the Song Dynasty(960–1279). People could exchange these slips for physical silver at bank branches across the country.
Silver drafts were made in multiple copies with matching serrated seal edges. One copy went to the customer and others stayed at the bank. All edges had to fit perfectly together to withdraw silver. The unique split edge marks were almost impossible to copy.
This mechanism is known as qifeng骑缝 (split-joint seal) in China. It first originated in the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046–771 BC). The Rites of Zhou records that contracts were written on bamboo or wooden slips in duplicate. Notches and marks were carved in the middle before splitting the slips, with each party keeping one half. The two halves would be matched by their notches for verification.
During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (770–221 BC), this idea evolved into hufu虎符/tiger tally tokens. A military tally was split into two pieces with identical inscriptions carved along the split edge. Troops could only be deployed if the patterns and characters on both halves perfectly aligned, serving as a metal version of the split-joint anti-counterfeiting system.
The technology matured in the Tang Dynasty (618–907). Government documents and private contracts commonly used split-joint seals stamped across the dividing line. The Chinese character "hetong合同" (contract) was written across the middle before the paper was torn apart, so the complete characters would only appear when the two halves were put together. This split-coupon system was later adopted for Song Dynasty (960–1279) jiaozi paper money and yinpiao/silver drafts of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368–1912).
Official Song dynasty paper money (Jiaozi交子) was abolished in 1107. Private silver drafts issued by Qing-era piaohao票行 (ancient exchange banks) vanished completely in 1951, hit hard by modern banks and currency reforms. Nowadays silver drafts no longer circulate as currency. Their collectible value depends on their rarity and physical condition.
Split-joint seals (骑缝章qifengzhang)are still widely used on important paper documents in modern China, an anti-tampering technique passed down from ancient times. They are applied across the edge of multi-page contracts, bidding documents and official archives. If any page is removed or replaced, the broken seal pattern can prove the file has been altered.
OMG I got so excited about this because they used a really similar (though far less refined) version of this for contracts in the European medieval period!
First they were called "chirographs", but later the word "indenture" (in its earliest meaning as just a legal document of any kind between two people) came to be used, originating from the practice of a contract being written twice on a single piece of parchment and then cut in half with serrated edges (as in dent, "teeth" -> indents -> indenture) in order for each party to take one half, so they could later piece them together and verify that there had been no forgery -- same as the Chinese silver drafts!
(Charter of the Clerecía de Ledesma, 1252, showing the serrated indents at the top -- presumably they are cutting rather than tearing because they're using parchment, which I expect is much harder to tear than wood-pulp paper like the Chinese were using)
Delights me when human beings find similar ways to solve the same problem at two different ends of the world. <3
If your system doesn't account for the fact that Parents Are Going To Be Abusive/Neglectful/Insufficient then it objectively sucks I'm sorry I don't make the rules
Monitored bank accounts for those under 18. Requiring parental consent for medical procedures. Parental controls on personal devices. "We won't teach this at school because parents are supposed to address it at home." Anything that puts all of the child's power onto the parents' hand, anything that assumes parents are going to inherently do enough of a good job no one else needs to interfer, every single one of these IS going to be used by controlling, neglectful or unprepared parents and already are, and if the system did not account for that very real, tangible, dangerous tendency, then it's not worth fucking anything. You shouldn't make things "for the youth"/with children in mind if you are going to overlook this painfully common aspect of their lives u_u
When those GPS trackers for cars were released, specifically advertised for parents to put in their child's car, I saw the ad on TV and said out loud, "God... I wonder how many abusive parents and spouses are gonna use that to keep their victims from escaping."
My dad was sat next to me and his eyes got big as saucers. He was so quiet when he replied solemnly, "I didn't even think about that... jesus christ, that's dark..." and I had to tell him I had friends who were probably gonna end up in that situation with their conservative parents. He was so removed from the notion of using that device for cruelty that he didn't even CONSIDER it! That's how easily people can be bought in by inventions/legislation advertised under the guise of "keeping the kids safe". My own father, who is a beautiful and gentle man with a good head on his shoulders, was ready to advocate for a tracking device, because it was sold as a device to "protect children".
Children need more protections from abusers, yes, but the biggest protection they could possibly have is AUTONOMY. GIVE CHILDREN AUTONOMY.
