"You're going back?"
villain pulls hero aside, making sure superhero doesn't see as they drag hero into the shadows.
"you need to hear something about superhero," villain starts, they tell hero about their time with superhero. the things they'd seen, things superhero made them do, things they never thought they'd tell anyone about.
hero shakes their head and takes a step back the way they came, "why are you telling me this?"

"hey, are you alright? you look a little pale." caretaker puts a hand on whumpee's shoulder.
"i'm- i don't know." whumpee's words melt together as they lean heavily on caretaker. "i feel like i might need to sit-" they fall completely against caretaker and then quickly slide to the floor, "sit down."
superhero leans against hero's door frame and sighs, "I see a lot of myself in you so i have to ask you something."
hero looks up at them, brows knit together, "yeah?"
"do you ever think about hurting yourself?"

villain, newly reformed and backed against the wall by hero, sighs and inhales deeply, "sometimes i look at you and think that you want to kill me."
"sometimes," hero says, taking another step toward them, "i look at you and think you want me to."
whumpee sits down, ignoring the pain in their ribs as they hug their knees to their chest, "just a few more hours, caretaker will come for you. just wait a few more hours."
whumpee frowns, looking at the plate sat in front of them. "i'm not hungry."
caretaker sighs and pulls the plate back on the table, "you haven't eaten in two days. i know that you don't trust me but please believe me. i'm not whumper, i'm not trying to hurt you. i just want you to get better."
"No! Don't hurt them, you asshole! For fuck's sake, let them go, I'll do anything!"
"Anything, huh?"
"Fuck you, yes! Take me. Let them go, and you'll see. I can hold so much longer."

whumpee has been out for years. their scars have nearly faded away when they spot whumper on the street.
whumpee hides in the crowd, following from a distance as whumper weaves through the sea of people.
it's not until whumper unlocks their front door, walks inside and drops their coat on the floor that they notice whumpee standing in their door way.
"what are you doing here?" whumper asks, reaching for their phone.
whumpee chuckles softly and takes the phone from whumper's hand. "you're going to pay for everything you did to me."
"hero, you're benched. i don't want to see you make that injury any worse. go rest." villain pushes them to their room and gently sits them down on the bed.
"you're punishing me?" hero looks up at villain, tears in their eyes.
villain shakes their head, "i want you to get better. you don't get better by pushing yourself too far."
medic picks the phone up, "hero? what's up? why are you calling me?" they can hear hero's shaky breathing, "hero, take a breath and tell me what's going on."
"it's whumpee..." they pause and take a moment to pull themself together, "um- I can't."
there's some static on the phone and a new voice comes through, "it's me, whumpee and hero were in an accident. you need to get to the hospital."
leader cries out in pain and immediately shouts out to their team. "i'm fine!" they take a sharp breath and glare up at whumper
"why are you lying to them?" whumper whispers. they press the heel of their boot against leader's chest. "they've heard everything. it's no use."
sidekick, the stand-in leader of the team paces the cell and looks anxiously at the hallway where whumper dragged leader down. "if they're still talking, they're still alive."
"if you can look my in the eyes and tell me that you feel safe here, then i'll leave."

ex-lab rat whumpee wakes up in the hospital, hearing the familiar beeping of machines sends them into a panic. they thrash around, trying to get their bearings as nurses and security run into the room, restraining them to the bed, only deepening their panic.
whumpee sneaks away from the team, hoping that nobody follows them. they press their cheek to a cold window and stare outside.
"hey," leader says, "what's going on?"
"i just had to get away for a bit," whumpee defends. "it's...it's too much in there. everyone's so happy. like we never even-"
"I know." leader sighs and sits down next to whumpee. "it'll hit them tomorrow, but for tonight we should just let them celebrate."
