Shane's book lay abandoned in his lap as he was watching Ilya play with Anya on the dock of the cottage. Yuna kept stealing glances at her son; it made her heart twist that this was the first time she was seeing him looking at anyone like this. How much had he repressed his true feelings before coming out to them? It made her sad if she thought about it for too long. So, she was glad he got to openly stare, now.
And to be fair, Ilya was an attractive man, of course.
"He is very handsome," Yuna commented idly, looking up from her book.
"Mom!" Shane complained, giving her a shocked and startled look. Back to repression.
"What?! I have eyes!" she shrugged, "And I'm just happy you found someone just as handsome as you." She reached out, squeezing his cheek. He pulled away with an annoyed little noise.
"Shane!" Ilya came running up the incline towards the adirondack chairs, smiling widely, Anya hot on his heels. "Come play with us."
It was so sweet and free and careless that it made Yuna's heart warm up. It made Yuna think of a much, much younger Shane, who always had friends, but never really had a best friend, never had children ring their doorbell and ask if he wanted to come out and play.
Nobody had expected it, but now she could see it: they were perfect for each other. Ilya brought out this new side in Shane, playful and more relaxed than he usually was. I love him, actually. Clearly, it was mutual.
Ilya reached out for Shane, and flicked some lake water on him in the process. "Oh no, your t-shirt is wet, you better take it off."
"Ilya!" Shane chided, eyes briefly flickering towards Yuna. She pretended to go back to her book.
Shane let himself be pulled up by Ilya, and did take off his t-shirt, neatly placing it over the backrest of the chair before letting Ilya take his hand and pull him down towards the dock.
Yuna watched them with a little smile.
"Hello." David came down from the porch, carrying two glasses of lemonade, handing one to her and joining her in the now-empty chair. He looked down at the dock where the boys were playing with Anya, tossing her ball back and forth, laughing as she jumped to catch it.
"They're very cute together, aren't they?" She turned to him, catching his eyes.
"Yes," he said with a soft smile. "I'm glad they found each other."
For a moment, they watched them, matching smiles on their faces, happy that their disciplined, serious son had found someone to make him smile and laugh like this.
Ilya tossed the ball into the lake, and Anya took a running leap into the water to get it back. While she did, Ilya wrapped his arms around Shane. They wrestled for a bit, still laughing, and even from all the way up here, they could see Shane blush behind his laughter.
They could also see Ilya grab a handful of Shane's butt.
"Oh!" Yuna started giggling.
"No, I don't need a repeat performance of that," David said mildly, and made a show of opening his crossword puzzle magazine.
