Do yâall think Second Sentinel has been attacked by greedy bugs looking to sell their parts? Do you think they remember being decommissioned up until their heart was removed? Do you think it fears foreign hands ripping into its chest? Do you think that allowing someone to reach in and touch their heart is the greatest act of trust for them?
Or are you like. Normal
âi have to listen to my bodyâs needsâ secret boss fight written by person who has chronic and disabling wrist pain which has fundamentally changed his relationship to his hobbies and his job <- i care it as someone who has also had chronic pain in my wrist/hand for 5 years
another thing i tend to think about with this. i also just think in chapter 5 there's a theme of care and dependency. the flowers have extreme guilt over being taken care of by asgore. flowery conceptualizes himself as weak and useless. in the dark world, his fantasy, he tries to return the care given to him to asgore to "make up for" asgore taking care of him when he should've died decades ago. it's an extreme example, but i also resonate with his feeling.
when your body or mind puts you in a situation where your reliance on other people becomes really explicit, you're trained by the world to see that as shameful or to see yourself as deficient. your efforts to ignore your needs just to avoid "being a burden," will leave you worse off. you punish yourself because of deeply internalized ableism.
regardless, even by virtue of being a living thing on this planet, you are already designed to need others. you have to listen to your body's needs even against a society that teaches you you shouldn't. you have to be okay with the fact that you have needs. sometimes your needs are different or are greater than the person next to you, and all you can do is listen to your body and turn to others when you need them. you're still a person when you need people.
when toby says this:
it's interesting to me how much he uses the language of deltarune to express this feeling. your hopes and dreams slipping away, and bitterness growing is literally the explanation we get for shadow crystals (and so wept the fallen star, making rivers with its tears. then, slowly, from the bitter water, something grew. it looked like glass). this is also the crushing feeling when you lose a sense of control when you're in pain, when you can't do things the way you want, the way you used to. but when you find yourself still able to fly, you do so because you've adapted. you've listened to your body. you've learned that listening to your body means changing the pace, letting yourself be cared for, letting yourself be helped.
as far as toby's said it, having to expand his team has made deltarune a better game. chapter 5 is so expansive because so many people helped to make it. Pink's fight has sprite work from guest artists, music with Camellia, bullets programmed by Toby's team. She is, to me, a love letter to Deltarune's development process as a whole and how it has shaped Toby, and a reflection of the kinds of thoughts Toby has shared with us about developing Deltarune alongside pain. I also think it's a beautiful follow-up to Gerson's themes of storytelling and authorship (letting go of "perfection" + accepting the contributions of others = both about rescinding control and embracing perseverance). Pink is also so much more than this, but I've been thinking about this a lot.
this is great meta! it also ties really wonderfully into the more obvious theme of nostalgia and an attempt to recapture some idealized time long past, and lends additional insight to that being reinforced by the semi-metatextual return to undertale and chapter 1 of deltarune!
Thinking About This Moment And How Weird It Is
Like yeah, Susie's backpedalling because she thinks Ralsei is rejecting her offer, but then she tries to make this compromise that... doesn't really make sense in this context.
Like, Ralsei isn't a troublemaker of any kind. A lack of crimes obviously isn't the issue here.
I think this is happening because of Susie's damage. I think she invited previous "friends" to go to a similar event, only for them to deride her for being into "kiddie games" or something. She's pre-empting hostility because it's happened to her before.
She thinks people that would associate with her only want to cause trouble, so she reframes the offer like that, but it barely conceals how much she wants to just... be with people. With friends.
Poor girl.

i think that soy sauce fish and honey bear must be the very very best of friends

Every work of art says things the creator hasnât considered, but if youâve really thought about what youâre trying to say then generally the additional dimensions you didnât know it had are in alignment with your purpose, whereas if you think youâre making no cultural comment at all you are actually making a LOT of cultural comments, most of which will be unflattering to you
Porn is one of the most culturally rich types of media imaginable so the answer is: you cannot do this
âI donât want to make anything with cultural dimensions. Thatâs why I only write within the genre that is legally sequestered away from every other kind of storytelling because of my cultureâs attitude towards depictions of sex.â

No, Ralsei, I'm not holding back. I just don't understand how the timing on his boss gimmick is supposed to work.
I think I know why Ralsei says this. from their point of view we beat every boss the first time (except the Knight) (but also the Knight if you beat them), because if we didn't, we die and have to reset. since Flowery doesn't kill us, the repeated losses would almost seem intentional. even if Ralsei knows the soul can reset, they don't remember the resets. they probably don't know how often Kris dies.
So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason weâre doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. Theyâre plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and theyâre missing it.
Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until theyâre big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when theyâre able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we donât have a major crash in a decade or two.
The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).
The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.
But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who havenât settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely donât even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldnât have been there otherwise.
Conservation is so fucken sick
itâs kinda funny bc the videos of grace hanging out w rocky is the happiest eva stratt had ever seen him. like imagine guilts been haunting you and the laws been hunting you and for decades you have no idea if itâs been all for nothing and thenâŚ.. first clip you see is the scientist and a sentient rock going âthis is me and my BOI âď¸â

I love the âcaptainâs logâ mechanism in Star Trek as a method for time skips and exposition.
I am, however, devastated that we never got an episode where any captainâs voiceover is strained and slow. very precise about the events theyâre describing. While the screen itself is showing the most batshit insane events and making it clear that the captain is trying VERY HARD to keep everyone involved out of a court martial.
Engineering teams around the world have been attempting to develop new methods of seawater desalination.
Scientists in China have developed a more efficient form of solar desalination that uses 47.4% less energy than alternatives. After the first year of testing, the scientists believe that at scale it would be able to desalinate water more cheaply than producing bottled water.
The goal is now to scale the technology for use in coastal areas and islands experiencing water insecurity.
