I'm an artist and medical student, and I use art to help me pay some bills.
I built a free, helpful tool because to help prevent other talented creatives from undercharging, as I really see this a lot online.
It's a calculator with a built in reality check
Input your survival costs and expenses
True billable hours
Get the rate you actually need to charge to hit a 20% (or whatever you choose) profit margin.
It generates the rate, a template negotiation email + final invoice.
Plan to keep this tool free, ad-free, and open to everyone.
🔗 Check your math: fairpaycalc.artres.xyz
If the "Thriving Rate" calculation empowers you to double your quote on your next job, please consider hitting the "Buy me a coffee"button. It keeps the server running and the code flowing <3
I am an artist and medical student and creator of Art-Res, a blog where I write and curate art resources. Hopefully you find art that bring
Thank you for all who tried/spread awareness of the tool and also to people who tipped, truly touched by the support and it means the world! <3
really upsetting myself wondering if shane would’ve come out if he had never found ilya or if he would’ve married a nice girl that he would inevitably grow to hate until all the choked down desire and resentment calcified in his gut and killed him and he died a flightless fucking bird
wondering if its more upsetting to think about shane undergoing a decade long petrification process, if on the other spectrum from it, ilya is married to svetlana and is actually pretty casually happy, citizenship and cup in hand, team and a city that would die for him, never quite feeling there was a brilliant sunrise he was missing. his life is simple. that's all there is, right?

Rest your mind tonight.
Murderbot, a construct that was built and used to do extreme violence it's entire existence : I hate talking to people but I will try to resolve this situation peacefully if I can, threats only make people panic and then they take irrational decisions. Extreme violence is sometimes unavoidable but last resort.
ART, a peaceful research transportation : I love talking to people because I can threaten them with extreme violence right off the bat and it makes them do what I want (ads more totally-not-weapons to it's research equipment)
@lichtenbug you're so right

It's wild how accurate this is to carnivores and herbivores.
"I would never-"
You would if you were tired enough. You would if you were hungry enough. You would if your mind and body had been worn down enough, through pain or disease or toil or violent struggle. You might if you were put on the wrong medicine, or you got the wrong kind of head injury, or you were forced to choose between someone else and yourself. You might if your livelihood was staked on it, or all your hopes and dreams. You might if you didn't know what else to do, if it's what you were taught or if nobody taught you anything else.
I have not been worn down in most of these ways. I have lived a remarkably privileged life. But I have been worn down in some ways. And they were enough to teach me that in the wrong circumstances, any of us can become someone we don't want to be. It's worth keeping that in mind.
ok so, I approached my local library with a proposal to donate a mural as a way to A: build portfolio/gain practical experience and B: give back to a beloved public institution. The director was very enthusiastic about it and i've been working on it since the beginning of March. Come with me as I endeavor to paint what is in all honesty an excessive amount of birds
I wanted the birds to look like they were actually in the space so first thing after doing the draft was to do a lighting study
after that I covered the walls in letters in lieu of a projector/vr headset bc i have neither of those :) Then i take a picture of the section of wall and superimpose the lineart over top of it so I can pencil in the lines
et voila
and that was a whole week on it's own so next comes the paintin' >:)
and now, the birds
Birds 1 and 2/14: Red Winged Blackbird, Male and female, Agelaius phoeniceus
i love lowland streaked tenrecs because they’re like if a mammal was a caterpillar
look at this thing. the animal
Wow. Wikipedia image not any less mammal that is caterpillar.

If you're looking for a low maintenance replacement for lawns, you've gotta look at the plants and groundcovers that are actually native to your area and suited to both your specific location and the soil type. Otherwise, you're just spending a lot of money on plants that will either die or completely take over, while not reducing soil erosion or needed maintenance.
Also groundcovers do still require maintenance like fertilization and trimming and many don't handle heavy traffic over them, so be aware of that before making very expensive landscaping decisions. Ripping out a lawn, likely replacing a lot of soil, and getting groundcovers established takes a lot of time and usually a lot of money.
Also if you live in the US, replacing your lawn (with groundcovers or a rock garden or anything like that) is banned in a lot of neighborhoods and can get you extremely hefty fines on top of the fees to undo any of your previous changes and put new turf in. Don't make these decisions without being aware of the rules in your neighborhood or being prepared to fight them, likely in court.
There are ways to at-home test the soil composition in different parts of your yard through wetting, shaping, and examining it but if youre in the US you can also just check the USDA Web soil survey to check your area's soil. If you want to really get into it, you can send off a soil sample for testing to know if you're lacking/overboard on any nutrients or need to alter the pH - your local university extension should either process these themselves or have a list of local places to send them.
Specific location means SPECIFIC! Look for plants that grow in the elevation and specific climate youre in - Oregon (for example) has a ton of different habitats, and what thrives in the eastern desert is very different than what will thrive in the temperate rainforest or cool coastal areas. Check native plant guides, or even just go on a walk to some nearby parks and take pictures of what you like that grows well where you are to ID later on - apps like iNaturalist can help with this but always doublecheck info and don't assume its native just bc its in a park. You can also call or email your local Master Gardener's group for specific info, advice, and resources.
Think about your big picture for the yard - groundcover that needs plenty of shade and canopy overhead will be amazing in a fruit tree guild, or selection of native flowers, bushes, and small trees building layers above it. It'll do horribly in full sun as the main cover for your lawn. Do you need wide access paths for wheelchairs or carts? Do you want to grow food for you, or the birds, or neither? More layers means more microclimates - cooler, wetter areas and areas you can leave open, hot, and sunny.
On that note, diversity builds resilience. Choose different species (or varieties of the same species) that are hardy against different things. A lawn with one species can easily be wiped out in severe or long-lasting weather - a lawn with 3 or 4 species, some hardy against drought and others flooding or disease, means 1 event won't wipe out everything and the others can provide some shelter for the plants that were hit hardest. Recovering in a field of dead grass, holding no moisture and all the heat that hits it, is harder than recovery in a field of other living things to moderate temperature and some of the weather. Diverse plantings also brings in more, and more diverse, insects and animals - some of which will be predators for problem pests, or food for local bird populations.
Replacing a lawn in a short period of time is VERY expensive and energy-intensive. But - depending on your area's rules - you can do it slowly and progressively, a bit at a time. Everything that follows assumes you've checked your neighborhood/city rules and called 811 to make sure there's no gas or power lines where you're sticking a shovel. Some people even make little info signs or something if they're tarping/putting cardboard over half their yard, so nosy neighbors understand its temporary.
Lasagna cardboard methods can be used to smother the grass. Tarps can be used in spring-summer to kill turf with shade and heat, especially if there's a lot of noxious weeds in it. Woodchips (NOT rubber) can be put down to slowly kill most of the grass while breaking down in place, and can be delivered cheaply with Chipdrop.
Free bulbs, flowers, bushes and trees can be found in local gardening groups, buy nothing groups, seed and scion sharing events hosted by groups like the Agrarian Sharing Network, or groups like Friends of Trees who give away free native trees and advice on how to plant them. Many farmers will post on craigslist when they have too much compost to deal with, and you can get free aged manure or compost as well as woodchips this way. Just be cautious of putting UNAGED manure directly onto young plants (itll "burn" their roots) or things you intend to eat. There are even groups that (with permission!!!) go harvest native plants from construction sites before theyre demolished!
Once established, a group of native plants (in the right place right soil right conditions) should largely take care of themselves beyond basic maintenance to keep them the size you want and keep them watered in major droughts. The first year is the most crucial in keeping newly germinating seeds, seedlings, bushes and trees watered. Bushes and trees might need help for another year or two depending on the type, and most things need some help during the increasingly severe weather we're getting, but a lawn replaced w native plants done RIGHT is a lot less work in the long run. It is definitely a big effort up front, whether done slowly or all at once, but every little bit is a piece of rebuilt habitat for insects, pollinators, birds, snakes, and more - and one step towards people seeing & normalizing using these big empty spaces for growing food and habitat and LIFE again
it's meee I'm your guardian angel hiiiiii 😇 okay🙏 so. in about six months, you're gonna die of starvation. 🥺 and if I don't protect you, I will get: #fired! 🫢 and that is No Good 🙅♀️ hahaaa So. 🙏 I looked into causes of starvation, and it turns out: Your death is totally preventable! 😯 Uh oh! 😆 There's more than enough food to sustain you without interfering with anyone else's survival, but you're not allowed to have it! 🤨 Whaaat? 🤷♀️ Apparently, your death is premeditated by thousands of things called "shareholders."
