This is such a skill
It's hilarious to me when people complain about AO3 and its policies, and what they allow on the site - but it's ESPECIALLY funny when people complain like "Why can't the freaks make their own site and just go there?"
Sweetie... AO3 is the site for that. Y'all invaded our space.
Wattpad and FFN still exist. Go there. They're as shitty and G-rated as you want. You can't have the luxuries that AO3 offers if you're gonna be a little bitch about its policies. Imagine walking into a strip club and complaining about the alcohol and naked ladies when there's a god damn Dennys next door you could have gone to. Christ.

IMAGE ID: A post from @[email protected] that says:
My kid is in a club at school, and they meet 4x a week for 4 hours. So all the parents chip in and stock a "snack cabinet" (granola bars, juice boxes, etc.) because teenagers are hungry goblins.
I went to fill the cabinet and noticed a padlock on it, apparently someone had been "stealing." I admit, this triggered me.
I spoke to the coach and told him that perhaps he should talk to the kids and find out if one of them is food insecure instead of locking up some two dollar box of granola bars.
The look on his face, I could tell it kinda clicked, he didn't even think of that, just assumed it was some punk kid breaking rules.
People who grow up with wealth don't even realize that it changes the way they think.
Luckily, he's a cool guy, and he was horrified that one of 'his kids' might be hungry at home.
Sometimes it just takes one comment to open up someone's eyes to their privilege.
As I tell my own children: If you see someone stealing food, no you didn't.

I am glad that bee hummingbirds hatch nests of eggs each smaller than a pea. I am glad that there are oceans two miles deep where fishes unknown to science glow like fireflies.
I am glad that the crumbs taken from my bedroom are returned to tiny cities built by ants, and that the thunder of the storms rolling in from the north trembles in my chest when it is still a ways off. Hello, says the world, you are so little. Hello, says the world, you are so big.
âAfter learning my flight was detained 4 hours, I heard the announcement: if anyone in the vicinity of gate 4-A understands any Arabic, please come to the gate immediately. Wellâone pauses these days. Gate 4-A was my own gate. I went there. An older woman in full traditional Palestinian dress, just like my grandma wore, was crumpled to the floor, wailing loudly. Help, said the flight service person. Talk to her. What is her problem? We told her the flight was going to be four hours late and she did this. I put my arm around her and spoke to her haltingly. Shu dow-a, shu-biduck habibti, stani stani schway, min fadlick, sho bit se-wee? The minute she heard any words she knewâhowever poorly usedâshe stopped crying. She thought our flight had been canceled entirely. She needed to be in El Paso for some major medical treatment the following day. I said no, no, weâre fine, youâll get there, just late. Who is picking you up? Letâs call him and tell him. We called her son and I spoke with him in English. I told him I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane and would ride next to herâSouthwest. She talked to him. Then we called her other sons just for the fun of it. Then we called my dad and he and she spoke for a while in Arabic and found out, of course, they had ten shared friends. Then I thought just for the heck of it why not call some Palestinian poets I know and let them chat with her. This all took up about 2 hours. She was laughing a lot by then. Telling about her life. Answering questions. She had pulled a sack of homemade mamool cookiesâlittle powdered sugar crumbly mounds stuffed with dates and nutsâout of her bagâand was offering them to all the women at the gate. To my amazement, not a single woman declined one. It was like a sacrament. The traveler from Argentina, the traveler from California, the lovely woman from Laredoâwe were all covered with the same powdered sugar. And smiling. There are no better cookies. And then the airline broke out the free beverages from huge coolersânon-alcoholicâand the two little girls from our flight, one African American, one Mexican Americanâran around serving us all apple juice and lemonade, and they were covered with powdered sugar, too. And I noticed my new best friendâby now we were holding handsâhad a potted plant poking out of her bag, some medicinal thing with green furry leaves. Such an old country traveling tradition. Always carry a plant. Always stay rooted to somewhere. And I looked around that gate of late and weary ones and thought, this is the world I want to live in. The shared world. Not a single person in this gateâonce the crying of confusion stoppedâhas seemed apprehensive about any other person. They took the cookies. I wanted to hug all those other women, too. This can still happen anywhere. Not everything is lost.â
â Naomi Shihab Nye (b. 1952), âWandering Around an Albuquerque Airport Terminal.â
This post (âWhat Moffat Doesnât Understand About Griefâ) fascinated me, because the author talks about Moffatâs fear of consequencesâhow heâll introduce world-shattering grief, or sacrifice, or hurt, or change, in his Doctor Who charactersâ lives, and then never follow up on it. There are no apparent consequences.
Thatâs exactly what makes BBC Sherlock feel so unresolved. We kept waiting for the consequences to come home, and they never did. There are huge things and subtler ones unaddressed, things that should have changed them in meaningful ways: Sherlock being tortured. Mary shooting Sherlock. Sherlock nearly confessing his love on the tarmac. Sherlock overdosing on the plane, reading Johnâs blog. Mycroft begging John to take care of him. John attacking Sherlock after Maryâs death. John saying he wanted more than his marriage to Mary. John confronting Sherlock about his need for love. Mycroft lying to Sherlock about his sister.
The emotional stakes keep being upped, but thereâs no closure. The things happen, there are tears or shouting, and then the story simply continues, without change, or growth, or discussion, or resolution. They end up in the exact same place as they began; 221B, two friends solving crimes and cleaning up after explosions, still more myth than men.
Emotional moments canât be introduced just for the hell of it; they have to lead somewhere, mean something. Once I thought the authors had a plan. But now I think weâll have to go on making our own meaning out of it all, through fanart and fic and meta and whatever means we have; for the sake of these charactersâ sanity, and our own, and for some kind of truly happy ending.
Beautifully stated. So true. We got caught up in the characters and the authors sadly lack certain skills. Itâs why Stephen Thompson should have stayed, he provided a different perspective.
I completely agree.
Sherlock is a classic example of a show thatâs collapsing under the weight of unadressed trauma. Itâs easy to inflict trauma, but itâs hard to deal with it afterwards. So Sherlock (the show, not the character), doesnât. (though Sherlock the character also very much doesnât address his own trauma)
In my opinion it all goes back to what I refer to as The Original Sin, the way they dealt with Sherlockâs âsuicideâ and the reactions to his return.
First of all, the way Sherlock returned was so incredibly tone-deaf that I donât even have words for it. He made John watch him commit suicide, let him grieve for two years and then treated his return as a joke. Ouch.
And it would have been salvageable if the show didnât then treat Johnâs reaction as irrational. Everyoneâs dismissive of Johnâs anger, his understandable hurt, his feelings of betrayal. Mrs Hudson is fine right away, Lestrade is fine right away, even though nobody can tell me they werenât deeply affected by Sherlockâs âdeathâ. So Johnâs anger and hurt are depicted as irrational and extreme. And then Sherlock manipulates John into saying out loud that he forgives Sherlock, and thatâs it. John said he forgives Sherlock, so obviously he does and we can call bygones.
But the relationship is still broken. And it never gets fixed. John doesnât trust Sherlock anymore. And Sherlock never manages to win back that trust because he continues to manipulate John.
Both Sherlock and John never get the room to address their trauma, their grief and their broken trust. And the thing is, we feel it. The show never gets back to what it was in S1 and S2, because the central relationship is broken. They get moments in The Sign of Three, but even then, it just never is what it used to be. Because theyâre both so painfully careful around each other, because the certainty they once had of each other is gone.
And then the show turns Sherlock into martyr and John into an abuser and thatâs the last straw, the characters we once knew are gone, destroyed by their creatorsâ gleeful infliction of trauma upon trauma and complete unwillingness and lack of emotional honesty to ever face up to the consequences of their narrative choices.
It reminds me of what happened to Supernatural after S3, when Dean goes to hell and the show is never the same because all that trauma goes unaddressed. Dean turns into a joyless alcoholic martyr and Sam basically falls down the rabbit hole of addiction without anyone acknowledging that yes, thatâs also a trauma response. I noped out near the end of S5, because the torture porn was too much for me. Breaking and breaking and re-breaking your characters is only narratively satisfying if you give them a chance to learn, heal and be better afterwards.
But that would require a level of emotional honesty and sincerity that neither Mofftiss nor the Supernatural showrunners were capable of.
What ⌠? You mean to tell me hugging murderistic fake sister with mind control powers wasnât enough to resolve ALL the trauma??
i know how to identify all of the barksies now.
you can make nearly any object into a good insult if you put âyou absoluteâ in front of it
example: you absolute coat hanger
as well u can just add âedâ to any object and itâs sounds like you were really drunk
example: i was absolutely coat hangered last night
#i was gazeboed mate #i was absolutely baubled
Meanwhile, âutterâ works for the first (e.g., âyou utter floorboardâ) but somehow âutterlyâ doesnât seem to work as well for the second (âI was utterly floorboardedâ).
Utterly doesnât work for drunk because itâs the affix for turning random objects into terms for *shocked*, obviously.
⌠huh.  I thought that might just be the similarity to âflooredâ, and yet âI was utterly coat hangeredâ does seem to convey something similar.
I have to tell you, I am utterly sandwiched at this discovery.
Completely makes the phrase mean âsuper tiredâ.
âGod, itâs been a long week, I am completely coat-hangered.â

The power of positive expectations...
My face is having uncontrollable spasms. Great. It hurts really, really, really bad.
I think part of why I have trouble explaining pain to the doctor is when they ask about the pain scale I always think âWell, if someone threw me down a flight of stairs right now or punched me a few times, it would definitely hurt a lot moreâ so I end up saying a low number. I was reading an article that said that â10â is the most commonly reported number and that is baffling to me. When I woke up from surgery with an 8" incision in my body and I could hardly even speak, I was in the most horrific pain of my life but I said â6â because I thought âWell, if you hit me in the stomach, it would be worse.â
I searched and searched for the post this graphic was from, and the OP deactivated, but I kept the graphic, because my BFF does the same thing, uses her imagination to come up with the worst pain she can imagine and pegs her â10âł there, and so is like, well, Iâm conscious, so this must be a 5, and then the doctors donât take her seriously. (And she then does things like driving herself to the hospital while in the process of giving birth. Probably should have called an ambulance for that one!)
So I found this and sent it to her. Because this is what they want to know: how badly is this pain affecting you? Not on a scale of ânothingâ to âhow Iâd imagine itâd feel if bears were eating my still-living guts while I was on fireâ.Â
I hate reposting stuff, but Iâll never find that post again and OP is deactivated, so, hereâs a repost. I can delete this later, i just wanted to get it to you and I canât embed images in a chat or an ask.Â
This is possibly why it took several weeks to diagnose my fractured spine.
Pain Scale transcription:
10 - I am in bed and I canât move due to my pain. I need someone to take me to the emergency room because of my pain.
9 - My pain is all that I can think about. I can barely move or talk because of my pain.
8 - My pain is so severe that it is difficult to think of anything else. Talking and listening are difficult.
7 - I am in pain all the time. It keeps me from doing most activities.
6 - I think about my pain all of the time. I give up many activities because of my pain.
5 - I think about my pain most of the time. I cannot do some of the activities I need to do each day because of the pain.
4 - I am constantly aware of my pain but can continue most activities.
3 - My pain bothers me but I can ignore it most of the time.
2 - I have a low level of pain. I am aware of my pain only when I pay attention to it.
1 - My pain is hardly noticeable.
0 - I have no pain.
Itâs also really important to get this kind of scale to people who have chronic pain, because chronic pain drastically lowers your perception of how âbadâ any kind of pain actually is, and yet something like this pain scale is extremely user friendly.Â
For example, if someone asked me how much pain Iâm in at any given time, Iâd say hardly any, and yet Iâm apparently at a chronic 2.5, and it only goes up from there depending on the day.Â
Thereâs also a similarly useful âFatigue Scaleâ
I havenât been below a 5 on this scale for 4 yearsÂ
Hereâs the fatigue scale
Fatigue scale image desc:
10: can barely move; canât talk
9: can barely move; can talk
8: can move, but canât do much more than watch TV
7: can watch TV and play a game on my phone simultaneously
6: can do work on my computer lying in bed
5: can get around the house, but definitely couldnât go out
4: can run a light errand
3: can get in my 10,000 steps, making my fitbit happy
2: can do three or more activities in a single day
1: going clubbing!
See also the Mental Health Pain Scale by Graceful Patient:
Mental Health Pain Scale transcription:
MILD
1 - Everything is a-okay! There is absolutely nothing wrong. Youâre probably cuddling a fluffy kitten right now. Enjoy!
2 - Youâre a bit frustrated or disappointed, but youâre easily distracted and cheered up with a little effort.
3 - Things are bothering you, but youâre coping. You might be overtired or hungry. The emotional equivalent of a headache.
MODERATE
4 - Today is a bad day (or a few bad days). You still have the skills to get through it, but be gentle with yourself. Use self-care strategies.
5 - Your mental health is starting to impact on your everyday life. Easy things are becoming difficult. You should talk to your doctor.
6 - You canât do things the way you usually do them due to your mental health. Impulsive and compulsive thoughts may be hard to cope with.
SEVERE
7 - Youâre avoiding things that make you more distressed, but that will make it worse. You should definitely seek help. This is serious.
8 - You canât hide your struggles any more. You may have issues sleeping, eating, having fun, socialising, and work/study. Your mental health is affecting almost all parts of your life.
9 - Youâre at a critical point. You arenât functioning any more. You need urgent help. You may be a risk to yourself or others if left untreated.
10 - The worst mental and emotional distress possible. You can no longer care for yourself. You canât imagine things getting any worse. Contact a crisis line immediately.
These are so important! SO SO IMPORTANT SHARE THIS AND SAVE IT TO SHOW YOUR DOCTORS!
This is the first time Iâve seen the fatigue scale, and HOLY MOLY thatâs a revelation!!! These should be on all hospital and doctor office walls.
Iâve never seen the mental health one! or the fatigue one! I printed out the pain one and gave it to my GP.Â
Needed to pin this somewhere, decided this blog was good.

This video has permanently changed my vocabulary so I need you all to see it
British Street Vocabulary
No matter how many times I start a new fic from a new (to me) writer, there comes that moment when I realise that the writer is not British and most likely to be American.
A recent example:
"The cab had traveled exactly three blocks in the ten minutes"
First of all, the past tense of the verb in British English is spelt "travelled". The single l version is what is used in American English.
And then there is that pesky word "blocks." You see, British streets are not laid out in a grid system the way they are in most American cities. When the cities were formed in the middle ages (or earlier) there is no concept of "blocks." Most streets, roads, avenues, crescents, and lanes (not to mention alleys) were not straight, nor were they aligned with north/south or east/west axes.
I give you an example from York:
There is no consistency of distance between the various turnings. which are named never numbered - no "Fifth Avenue" here. The street names vary- Deangate, College Green, Goodramgate, Bedern, and Bartle Garth. Not a road, street, avenue or other generic term in those names.
Not even in Sherlock's London does the concept of "block"really work. On Baker Street going south, for example, there is one cross-road junction before it crosses Marylebone Road - a distance of about 150 meters. South of Oxford Street, Baker Street turns into North Audley Street, where in 150 meters, there are as many as six intersecting roads.
So blocks don't work as a concept. Metres travelled (which is how a cab fare is priced, plus time elapsed stuck in traffic) is a more reliable measure. Would Sherlock have been willing to stay in a taxi that was only moving 150 metres in ten minutes, when he could have walked the same in less than a minute?

A Glimpse by amaruuk
(Words:Â 13,991Â Chapters:Â 1/1, T) John had stopped mistaking strangers for Sherlock in the second year following his death. In fact, he was ready to move on, with Mary. But then he glimpses someone at a pivotal moment, and it changes his life once more. What if the circumstances of Sherlock's return had been less volatile for John? What if John had realized that marrying Mary would be a mistake, the easy path rather than the right one? This is a story of altered circumstances, timing, and a very helpful Mycroft.
An excellent one-shot, a what-if of the highest order that deserves more hits, kudos, and comments. I recommend it!
Love this story!
