There's something hilarious about how so much subsequent media has positioned Vampires and Werewolves as, like, binary opposite entities, and then you read Dracula (1897) and realize that wolves are that guy's preferred solution to every problem. You'd say something to Dracula about "ah yes, werewolves, vampires' great eternal enemies," and he'd just be like "you mean my subcontractors?"
I'm really enjoying the growing consensus in the notes that there's an Eternal Rivalry Between Vampires and Werewolves now, entirely because the werewolves, sick of Dracula's bullshit, have unionized.

Pigeon uses Remembrance day poppies to build a nest on top of Anti-bird spikes in 2019. The absolute amount of symbolism going on here is off the charts.
A pigeon. Both in that it's a dove which means peace, but more importantly that pigeons were essential as messengers during WWI. Most famously Cher Ami.
The spikes resembling violence and hostility.
Using Poppy pins made specifically for Remembrance day and all the symbolism of Poppies and WWI itself.
The fact that it stole the poppies from a tomb of an unknown soldier.
The fact it took them to make a nest to lay eggs and raise its babies in.
The fact that it's on the ledge of a church.
The fact that the window it chose to make the nest against is of a wounded soldier.
You couldn't have STAGED a better photo if you tried.
specifically the way it’s nesting on anti-pigeon architecture and pigeons are no longer remembered or valued for their service to society and instead seen as vermin just as a disproportionate number of homeless people are veterans who are no longer remembered or valued as people but instead seen as vermin and must build their lives around anti-homeless architecture and policies.
Out of control Edwardian youths refuse to clap at production of Peter Pan, force distraught J.M Barrie to pull out rarely seen "Tinkerbell Fucking Dies" ending
idk why people are still trying to do "hear me out"s on tumblr
you could talk about wanting to fuck the space needle on here and people would still call you a poser for insisting on fucking "conventionally attractive architecture" as if that's a coherent, easily-recognizable category

Ok so this one takes some explaining. The themed premiere for @vidukon this year was 'Unfinished Business'. The con itself was held in Birmingham, which is the terminus (now) of the High Speed Rail 2 project. Well. It will be. There has been so much slippage the new station is a massive hole in the ground. Birmingham also happens to be my home town, and I can't remember a time when parts of it weren't been dug up, knocked down, built, and the knocked down again. The whole city is unfinished business, and HS2 is a big part of that.
I joked that I should make an HS2 vid for the premiere, and then got encouraged to actually do it. The song suggestion was from Janecdotes and was perfect, as of course, Ozzy was also from Birmingham.
I wasn't really sure how to go about vidding something that doesn't have the same narrative as a TV show. With a show, you sort of already have that structure of a story you're working in, even if you are breaking the story in some why. I wasn't even really sure what footage existed for me to use.
I ended up writing a storyboard with what I wanted to happen, the narrative I wanted to show, then went looking for footage. I watched a LOT of engineering and drone footage, technical explainers, and parliamentary questions. I also incorporated static images, such as headlines and search queries.
I think I was definitely inspired by the way @beatriceeagle uses static panels in They Give it Away, and the approach to vidding an infrastructure project was inspired by absternr's amazing can-opener bridge vid Hard Knock Life.
Crazy Train is a long song, so I chopped out about a minute or so of it- including some of Randy's legendary guitar work, which I'm sure is metal blasphemy.
One thing that I didn't expect to happen was developing very fond feelings, almost pride, about HS2 itself. It gets a lot of stick in the media, and it's decades behind schedule, and billions over budget. But we do still need it (ideally all the way up to Leeds) and seeing the engineering feats, the miles of tunnel, the viaducts. the stunning bridges, everyone is working so hard and it's going to be amazing. Gosh I love railways.

hey if you're not a mobility aid user, and you want a simple way to make public spaces more accessible to those of us who are, i have a tip for you:
push in your chairs when you get up from tables.
when people don't push in their chairs, people with bulky aids like wheelchairs and rollators can't get through. also a lot of people who use canes have wider gaits than able bodied people, and having a chair in the middle of their walking path is a real obstruction. while some of us are able to push chairs out of our way, a lot of us are not, and wind up boxed in/out because somebody didn't push in their chair.
so if you want to do something simple that can make a big difference in terms of like. navigating an outdoor food court or a cafe or what have you. push in your chairs.
