Even as a Catholic, I think it’s beautiful to see Islamic scholarship, which is responsible for some of the greatest advances in human history, depicted with the utmost care and reverence here. No effort was spared in making this as historically and culturally accurate I love that. It’s beautiful to see other faiths and cultures handled with care in anime.
the truly evil part about lolcowing is that the targets are almost always people who have done something/things that are unsavory at best or objectively harmful at worst and that is used as justification to treat them however you want with no recourse whatsoever. like you suddenly have permission to dehumanize someone for what, fucking entertainment. and if anyone tells you to cool it for a minute, suddenly they're supportive of that behavior, making you effectively immune to anyone who disagrees. like apparently nobody's ever heard of disproportionate punishment
speaking as someone who found voice training to be a fulfilling and sometimes even enjoyable experience: everyone needs to shut the fuck up and leave trans women alone about our voices forever. treating a woman more poorly than you would otherwise just because you feel some way about the sound of her voice is a fucked up way to treat someone and if you do, you should feel ashamed. i wish i had been allowed to be motivated exclusively by the intrinsic fulfillment of taking hold of my femininity on my own terms. but regardless of whether i liked that process, i mostly did it because I wanted to make it less likely that I'd be discriminated against. and guess what? it worked. i remember the first day my voice passed on the phone. the joy of it was somewhat qualified by the growing and uncomfortable awareness of how much better i had just been treated, confirmation that the friction I'd been feeling was real by way of its sudden disappearance. i *like* the sound of my voice and it upsets me that my favorite thing about it is how well it prevents me from being abused.

logging onto tumblr like heyyy i'm thinking about the same character i've spent the past few weeks thinking about. no change here. just wanted to let yall know
This is where the plot and characterization gets tenuous for me. (Especially characterization). Warnings for mentions of CSA/SA.
We're reintroduced to Marie as she prepares to get dressed and vows to murder Jean-Baptiste's longtime friend, Arthur Griffin, for sexually assaulting and raping her. This session also involves her servant, Andre, blushing at her as she's shirtless - even though she's 11 years old. Anyways, we're treated to flashback where it's shown how she first met Arthur Griffin when she was 9, who immediately undresses her with his eyes at first sight, and in that same day requests for Marie to visit his mansion completely alone so as to "question" her before he writes a recommendation letter for her job as the Prevote de L'Hotel.
In contrast to Anne-Marthe, Griffin is a poorly written antagonist, and we get the first instance of using SA as a cheat code for "this (male) character is Evil". Rather than a long sequence of Griffin grooming Marie for months into believing that there's someone else aside from her older brother who values her interests, only to be completely crushed when she realizes that Griffin did all of that just to abuse her, it cuts straight to Marie being raped (fortunately, she's only shown as a bisque doll), and presumably sexually abused for months on end until Griffin had to leave for war.
And Marie's expressions aren't any better, as the expression she gives when she's goes up the suite is one more of being inconvenienced than actually terrified, or confused, because she's treated in the narrative more like an adult in a child's body than a 9 year old. Griffin acts as if he didn't commit any crime as he ascends the platform, asserting through not having his hair cut and refusing to have his wrists tied. It's cathartic to see Marie trying to make Griffin's death as painful as possible, but it ends up making people view Marie an even worse light: Not only she's a a child and a girl, but her actions have given more credence to the public's belief that women are unfit to be executioners because they're unable to "control" their emotions.
Like with Charles' first execution, Jean-Baptiste steps in, and is able to cut off Griffin's head in one strike despite half of his body being paralyzed. What makes it all the more worse for Marie is how Baptiste displays Griffin in a respectful light, much like numerous cases where a powerful man is given a light sentence despite the huge amount of evidence and eyewitness testimonies of how he used his authority to sexual abuse women.
We meet again with Becu after Marie is able to mow down a group of adult men who lured her out to try and kill her. Despite about having three years of experience with sword practice, Marie is able to chop off heads, calculate what to do in a fight and eviscerate people with ease. (Though in my perspective, this event leans heavy into a power fantasy. Marie fails to kill the ringleader, but not because of lack of skill, but because of Becu suddenly showing up and embarrassing Latour.)
As for Charles, he discovers that Jean-Baptiste was just as tormented with his role, when Charles finally sees what's behind the secret door in his father's study: a room filled with various cross as a place for Jean-Baptiste to atone. Charles has a moment with Father Grisel (it turns out he was actually a conventionally attractive man before his illness, shocker), and then Charles turns around to see Becu, naked before him. This whole sequence has this odd tone of "character is first adverse to sex but instantly loves it the moment they do it the first time" and the concept "sex is a rite of passage to adulthood". There's also moment where Becu recounts how she was constantly violated and thrown out of houses, and she tries to reason that it's because she's been given the "talent" of pleasing men.
This volume feels like Shinichi's first attempt at giving Marie depth by having her be a CSA survivor, but it's done with the assumption that if a female character is present, especially in a work set prior to the 21st century, then sexual abuse must be included in her backstory. Even then, in contrast to how Charles is constantly haunted by Anne-Marthe's abuse, Marie's SA is never brought up ever again, nor is she shown presenting any signs of sexual abuse - unless you count Marie hating men.
Words don't do justice with how Marie's SA story-line was handled, so I highly recommend watching this video. While it focuses more on romantasy books that are based off of the European medieval era, the main topic is how some people try to justify having sexual abuse in these stories because it’s “historically accurate”, and the pros/cons of including such narratives.
The arc of the First Sanson with Marguerite Jounne would’ve been fascinating if it was focused on how the Memoirs were only as Charles I perceived them and how men view women who go against the grain as the downfall of society. Basically he viewed Marguerite as a buxom evil seductress and that he didn’t truly raped her - Oh no, Marguerite only pretended to be asleep and actually wanted Charles I - It was all part of Marguerite’s plan to drag someone else down with her loneliness! (Why else would Charles I suddenly go into a rage and choke Marguerite to death?)
But then it cuts to the same events but from Marguerite’s perspective, showing the audience that she was only a teenager, trapped by the adult men around her, and that whatever small attempts she’s made for her own autonomy culminated with Charles I killing her.

in the tradition of outcast (2014), dragon blade (2015), and the great wall (2016), we need a movie set in the 1630s where a disillusioned member of the embroidered uniform guard and a profit-driven jianghu mercenary flee the corrupt and crumbling ming dynasty and somehow end up in the equally corrupt city of cologne, where they become key players in the fight against the sinister forces of cardinal richelieu and eventually secure the peace of westphalia and the end of the thirty years’ war. this is a million dollar idea i’m telling you
i really do love this concept. the protagonist is like i’m sick of dealing with wei zhongxian’s shit, i’m gonna go someplace where people are holy and don’t even know how to act like this (the impression of europe he got from the jesuit missionary he had a tactical lunch with once), and so he travels 5000 miles and as soon as he stops to catch his breath he runs into cardinal fucking richelieu, the european wei zhongxian
In this Gospel story (Matthew 10:40-42), Jesus mentions how blessed people will be if they meet His disciples with hospitality instead of persecution. He says that those who receive a godly person into their home because they're godly will receive a godly reward, and even someone who gives just a cup of cold water to one of His disciples will not lose their reward.
In this cartoon, Jesus finishes His "cup of water" quote, which the brothers, James and John, take interest in. Later, the brothers (who Jesus called, "the sons of thunder"), find themselves in a pub to refresh themselves with cool drinks. When they find out the drinks are only lukewarm, they share a knowing smirk. Jesus said someone who gives them a cold drink would be blessed, which (in the cartoon) the thunderboys mistakenly take to mean that someone who gives them NOT-cold water will be DAMNED TO HELL. They request Jesus fulfill this decree when the lady fails to cool their water, and Jesus declines, since that's not actually what He was implying... just to be clear.
When asked about ice, the old lady who owns the pub mentions that the ice machine is broken. This is a subtle nod to the fact that Scotsman ice machines are notorious for constant parts failures and bad warranties. The company, Scotsman, derives its name from Scotothy Sman, a Scotsman of little note who was cursed by witches after deserting his military in the harsh winter of 1461, during a critical operation in the Mexican-Scottish War. Because of his desertion, his whole country froze to death. Some say the failure of the Scotsman ice machines is due to the witches' curse, and that all the cold that SHOULD be making ice in the Scotsman machines is actually being channeled back to their namesake, Scotothy, instead. Legends say Scotothy Sman still roams the world, forever to be haunted by the icy chill of a million broken ice machines, forever to wander and freeze just as his forsaken countrymen did.
