maybe this is a "nobody carves pumpkins anymore*" statement but really does feel like there was more optimism when i was in high school for things that still deserve optimism? like idk when I was a kid people talked about existential threats a lot but there was a positive bias (HIV will be cured one day, whales will leave the endangered list, no more world hunger etc.) things that haven't been achieved but there's been enough observable progress within the last 10-15 years that these are clearly not lost causes? some things are fucked beyond repair or getting worse but that was probably also the case when I was a kid.
