some people really don’t realize how privileged they are that they get fanfics for free. imagine having access to something for free because someone is kind enough to share it with you… and then being rude, entitled and an ungrateful pos to that person who was kind enough to share their creation with you for free

“almost 1 year is a lil too much for me” fuck off. fanfic writers don’t owe you anything. one of my favorite fics was updated after 13 years, and what I did is that I thanked the author for choosing to continue the work, I didn’t act like a spoiled toddler by asking why they didn’t update sooner. and even if a writer chooses to abandon their fic permanently with no explanation, that is their choice, their hobby, their decision. they don’t owe your entitled ass anything.

sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.

you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.

ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.

ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.

there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being rude, instead of asking why the world doesn’t revolve around your personal comfort, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.

it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.

also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.

if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

Exactly my thoughts on Caleb wanting to be a kindergarten teacher.

Let's not forget what happens leading up to him deciding her wants to teach.

He doesn't have a job because he doesn't need one, and he never helps Natalie with Clementine. When she's frustrated with him and starts pushing him to get a job, he says he should find a job where you just have play with babies because he's good at that.

Caleb refuses to see how he's an inadequate parent and husband because he has fun doing the fun part of raising a baby. He doesn't change diapers, or clean up vomit, or breastfeed. That's all on Natalie. Because Natalie is forced to do all of the actual parenting she functions essentially as another set of invisible hands to do whatever Caleb needs (think of all of Doug's "godsends"). Her labor is reduced to something fun and easy.

Then he has the idea to be a kindergarten teacher because, like he said, he's good at playing with babies. There's so much he doesn't consider here. First of all, babies and 5 y/o kids are obviously so developmentally different. Kindergarteners have needs and wants and problems and they will be vocal about it! Caleb would absolutely not handle them with kindness or grace. He also completely neglects to consider that being a kindergarten teacher involves actual teaching. It's not just playing with kids, it's making sure they know how to read and hold a pencil and do basic addition and communicate with their peers and so much more that people take for granted. However, because (as Natalie points out), being a kindergarten teacher is deemed a women's job, it's another form of labor that Caleb gets to reduce to being fun and easy. His idea of being a teacher is founded on his parenting, all of which is held up neatly by his misogyny.

Caleb being a spoiled bigot who doesn't appreciate labor extends beyond his misogyny and combines with his racism with the field hands. The people who make their farm run, the Mexicans who Natalie says Caleb just found in the hardware store parking lot, they do all of the labor that Caleb and Natalie profit off of economically and socially (and politically because their social media empire helps Doug's campaign!). The real work is pushed onto other people because Caleb only wants to do the fun chores. He gets to play pretend as the All-American white pioneer cowboy, an archetype that exists because of the genocide of Indigenous people and the racism and misogyny of the film industry that popularized this image through movies and TV.

I firmly believe that Caleb would turn to the manosphere even if he became a kindergarten teacher. Honestly, I don't think that Caleb could become a kindergarten teacher. He is so unfocused and views everything as a game, I don't think he could face the work of becoming one. You don't need a masters to teach kindergarten in Idaho, so he wouldn't need to go back to school, but Natalie was applying for jobs for him. He wouldn't be able to advocate for himself. He wouldn't get an interview. Even if he did, he'd probably do terrible.
