I’m Australian. Sure, we do have those doors, but the vast majority of places in Sydney are automatic sliding doors or old-fashioned manual push/pulls because we don’t need to block out the cold and wind the same way here.

So every day I experienced a culture clash with something as basic as what doors were normal for me.

Man Man is a music project by Ryan Kattner (who goes mostly goes by the name "Honus Honus")

"Man Man" as a project mostly refers to Honus Honus himself because he has a rotating list of people he collaborates with who play drums, bass, etc. - but it also includes these collaborators

it's indie rock but it's also very experimental and pulls in elements of electronic music and uses non-western scales sometimes. most of the songs can be broken down into "what if there was a fucked up monster man" and "god i'm so in love and so depressed"

Honus Honus himself is kind of a harry du bois phenotype (mustachioed, fat, bisexual, camp, high energy) and has incredible pipes and stage presence. he's very funny and charismatic and also overtly political. so um go listen to him. he hates the album "On Oni Pond" but that was my starting point and I know every track on that album by heart. then i'd listen to his most recent which is "Carrot On Strings" and then check out his other songs in whatever order

i've been listening to Man Man since i was in college, and two years ago he released an album and was going to go on tour to promote the album. but due to some sort of undisclosed issue (due to NDA) with his record label, he was not allowed to perform. i originally had tickets for that canceled concert

now he's back 2 years later and i managed to get to see him on stage! you really do miss a lot just listening to the albums

he was up there wearing a glittery sequined jacket, jumping up and down on his keyboard (like. his entire ass), and wearing a mask of (i believe?) pete hegseth (as he made a comment later in the show insulting hegseth and mentioning him by name)

i managed to get a shirt, a poster, and two pins

i also more or less filmed the entire concert. tumblr hates it when i try to upload footage (i have to compress everything) so we'll see if i ever get around to doing that

i didn't take pictures this time around bc i was further from the stage, using a newer phone (which actually has a worse camera), and using a third party app to control said camera (whose interface brings to mind an airplane cockpit. the UI is not beginner friendly)

I'm talkin white people selling rattles and dream catchers, white people banging First Nations style drums, white people teaching talking stick workshops, that kinda shit

So what do you do when you see this crap? How do you show your disapproval in a way that makes them give a shit?

I'll tell you what I do. The point is to show them that appropriating Indigenous cultures will lose them customers.

When I see fakey Native art I say something like "Oh wow, you make dreamcatchers! What nation are you from?" (Use tribe in the states)

I used to ask point blank if they were Native, but I'd nearly always get some Cherokee great grandmother bullshit, or even "I'm not sure, I could have some Native in me!"

Most of the time they don't know what I'm talking about, because they're not Native and don't know that this is a very normal thing to ask when meeting another Native.

When they ask me what I mean I say "I mean your tribe, which First Nation are you from?"

This is the point where they sheepishly mumble that they are not First Nations.

I let my face fall and say something like "Oh. That's disappointing" or "Wow. Unfortunate."

I let it get awkward. And then I leave, shaking my head in disapproval.

You may feel like you need to educate them on cultural appropriation but here's the thing: it's 2025. They know. Brenda the middle class reiki shaman is FULLY aware that her smudge fans are stolen culture. She doesn't care. The only way to make them care is to hit them where it hurts: the wallet.

Make them think that you would have purchased what they are selling if it was AUTHENTIC.

If you wanna go the extra mile send an email to the organizers, in your best white people voice, and tell them that you are disappointed that they are facilitating culture theft.

He probably was fuming by the time he got into his car after his shades became a casualty of the attack.
