it's funny how many stories there are which set up the hero of the story as someone whose job it is to "restore the balance between light and dark" but what we see from them mostly only looks like trying to vanquish any signs of darkness

you go to the website of a pest control company and they talk about how their job is to restore the balance between house and bug

Legendary hero takes up the sword to restore the balance but things have been pretty good lately so they mostly have to raze a few villages and slash funding for social services

The thing about "restore the balance by vanquishing darkness" is that it implies the scale has ALREADY tipped too far towards darkness and the hero is only fighting the excess. A "hero" who actually tried to eradicate ALL darkness/evil/chaos/death would be terrifying, out to burn the land in eternal daylight, punish any moral shortcoming no matter how slight, force everything into a preordained destiny and trap everyone in this world forever.
