The physical motion of bending and unbending pushes that fluid around and makes sure it gets into the cartilage properly. I feel like I'm summarizing this poorly, or oversimplifying it maybe, but this is essentially why your joints start to break down if you don't move them enough. If you're not moving them, you're not feeding them.
